Makray Memorial Golf Club
About
Makray Memorial Golf Club (formerly known as Thunderbird Country Club) is a public course that has been open since 1962. To commemorate 40 years of great golf, the course was remodeled and revamped in 2002. The renovations improved its playability and also made it more challenging. The championship-caliber layout features strategically placed bunkers, including some Scottish-style sod-faced ones, and tricky water hazards on several holes. The hilly terrain offers both challenging elevation changes and scenic views. The golf course finishes with a long par 5 that plays across a canyon of berms to a narrow fairway. Further accuracy is needed to reach the well guarded green surrounded by high berms, a pot bunker to the left, and a deep, steep bunker to the right. In addition to the course, Makray Memorial G.C. boasts an extensive practice facility with 1 1/2 acres of grass teeing ground, two putting greens, and a short-game area.

Finally played and worth the stop
Has wanted to try this place for a while. Great choice. Greens were nice, true and fast. Layout was also challenging. Some elevated greens and long, even from the second longest tees.
A good course with good value
Makray is a good layout and the value through Golf Advisor is great.
Challenging Shotmakers Course
This was my 2nd time playing Makray Memorial. I like the layout every hole made you work for Par. Had to make some key shots into greens to avoid the hazards. Most greens are elevated requiring a uphill with added yardage approach shots. The greens have good contours and are fast. Hope to play again with some more course knowledge.
Great couse, difficult pin placement and greens. The greens make you respect them on approach and where you leave your missed putts.
Best burger on the turn of any course I played by far. You will need a pick me up. This burger and a cold beverage of you liking was certainly needed to tackle the back nine.
Wonderful layout
It was a sunny 45 degrees but the course was in great shape. The greens are very fast so stay under the hole. Fairways were pristine and the pace of play was not an issue because of the 45 degree weather and playing on a weekday. It's a great golf experience and we were lucky to get a good price. A must play course that will challenge your course management and short game.
Great Course, Great Condition
The clubhouse and facilities are beautiful. The course is in incredible condition. The take great care of it. They also go cart path only at the drop of a hat and keep it that way 3 days after rain.
Great shape despite end of season
This was first time playing this course although I had heard about it through various avenues. Son (14) who plays high school golf and I found available Early morning Saturday tee time at last minute. Due to this, I was concerned what type of shape the course would be in. We were more than pleasantly surprised. Course was in impeccable shape despite time of year. Don't have one bad thing to say about course conditions, although leaves are starting to become s problem. However, they had active leaf blowers out on the most affected holes. The greens were true rolling and pure, albeit fast and a little tricky to adjust to breaks. Virtually all greens slope front to back and are fast, so stay below the hole!! Local knowledge is likely critical on these greens. Wonderful staff and very friendly. Very pleased, worth the pice in my opinion.
Disappointing
For a premium course at premium prices it was not what was expected.
Tough Test
Not your father's Thunderbird. This property has always seemed tailor made for a great course. The group that transformed this once poor track really hit it out of the park. Before moving back to area, never played here, but wow what a nice course. Fast but receptive greens, very well maintained tee to green, rough to rough. Nice bunkers, plenty of fluffy sand. This track is very challenging with a good mix of demanding long par 4's, risk/reward shorter ones, tough par 3's and fair par 5's. Pin placements can be a bit unfair at times as some will leave your ball off the green or back to your feet. A little proud of itself with higher than average rates, but they do put effort in keeping this course in tip top shape. Excellent practice facility as well. Some staff are very friendly, others not so much. They know who they are and you will recognize them without too much interaction also.
End of season??
Been here a few times already but will definitely not be back at the current rates. 5+ hour round in 100 degree weather with no enforcement of pace which comes with a price of $94. It was not a spectacular round to say the least. The group ahead of us could barely reach the fairway off the tee box and they use a range finder for every shot??!! The carts come with GPS you fools!! Although they will not be as accurate, does it make that much of a difference if you cant hit past 150yds?? Rangers should be doing their job and ask if theres anything they could do to help if youre charging these rates!! Must we complain to get you to focus on your patrons?
Anywho, was once one of my favorite courses because the greens are usually well maintained and quick but if its going to take me 15 minutes per hole waiting at the tee box and fairway, id rather leave this course off my list. I dont mind paying higher rates but that should be complimented by epic experiences. 5+ hour rounds should be reserved for forest preserve courses.
Shame on you Makray for a horribly over priced round today along with an ancient card reader that took nearly 5 minutes to pay for a couple beers; i was afraid it would take as long and chose not to drink more. I still tipped because its the polite thing to do. What have you done in the 23rd to go above and beyond for your patrons in the blistering 100 degree heat?????
Pleasantly surprised
I had heard about Makray for years and finally played. Well worth it at the $55 I paid. A whole lot of course for a mid handicapper. Great shape, fast greens, well manicured.
Beautiful setting, in poor shape
We played as a four-some on Saturday the 9th. The fairways were really beat-up from play and not irrigated nearly enough. Greens were in good shape but unreasonably fast and pin placements were really terrible. Made for slow play. Expensive relative to other courses and expected it to be in better condition. Will not go back.
First off at 7
Great start working. Starter was the most hospitable man I've seen all summer. Offered cold water. Anything we wanted
Course is excellent as usual. Great layout Fair holes with small fast greens Tough steep aprons in the back side. Long too. You play this at the back tees and it's tough.
Hope to play it again soon
Great course, great shape, great pace of play
This course has a fantastic layout which never gets boring no matter how many times that you play it. My group has been playing the course sine it reopened as Makray. Each year, Don Habjan and his staff make subtle changes to improve the overall look and playability of the course. The fescue that was planted a couple of years ago has grown in nicely presenting a very appealing look off of the tees. The fairways are in good condition. The groundskeeper has the staff cut one half of the fairway in the direction of the hole creating that much coveted " speed slot". Speaking of speed, the 10 minute tee times leads to a very good pace of play. Playing around 8 AM on a Saturday at a 4:05 pace average while walking is a rare treat these days, but that is what you can expect on this course. What is that worth to you?
The back tees stretch to 6900 yards but on a par 71. The course rating from the tips comes in at a hefty 74.5 Yes and it does play 3.5 over par from the tips. However, the course offers 3 additional tee selections, based on skill level. The greens are country-club like and run incredibly smooth. Make sure that you leave your ball on the low side of the pin.
The course still has some room for improvement. Some of the tees have settled sine the reconstruction and can be inconsistent. The staff is aware of the issue. Hopefully they can continue to flatten out all of the tee boxes over the next couple of seasons. The course also boasts a grass range. The grass on the range is nappy and not very consistent. A move to a bent grass turf would make a good improvement and be consistent with the well manicured course. Just knit picking at this point.
The clubhouse is consistent with what you would expect at a private club. The staff is exceptionally friendly and treat the regulars like members and the first time guests with respect. The outdoor patio is well situated looking out over the 9th and 18th greens. There is a lower level locker room with showers if required.
I have been playing this course for over 10 years and continue to enjoy the experience. I have played with the same foursome for many of those years. From time to time we have a guest fill n for one of the regulars. The consistent feedback and commentary is: " Why would you ever join a private club when you can play a gem like this where they treat you so well". Great question and one that continues to keep our group at Makray
Definitely not the 4/5 star course or experience we expected
Course was a big disappointment from start to finish. Upon arriving there is no one to greet you at the bag drop. Then when checking in, we were behind four people and it took like 15 minutes to check them in. Once we got to the counter, there was no greeting from the woman behind the counter. Nor did she advise us that range balls were not included or that the machine that dispenses the balls only takes single dollar bills! $3 gets you 24 balls. There is only 1 machine, so you need to stand in line for that too as others stick bills in one at a time. Course conditions weren't that great. It seemed rather dried out and there were bare and brown patches in the rough and fairways. Course showed a lot of play. It wasn't particularly difficult, but the greens are a little tricked up. Many were crowned and/or elevated and had steep drop offs into the rough or sand bunkers. Bunkers were inconsistent. Some had sand and some had hardly any. Some were extremely wet underneath dry sand. Even at the end of the round, there was no one and no signage to indicate where to return the carts. Rack rate on the weekends is $94 with cart. It's definitely not worth that! It's a shame because the course definitely has potential. It needs friendlier staff and some serious TLC. The best thing I can say is that we played in less than 4 hours!
