Makray Memorial Golf Club
About
Makray Memorial Golf Club (formerly known as Thunderbird Country Club) is a public course that has been open since 1962. To commemorate 40 years of great golf, the course was remodeled and revamped in 2002. The renovations improved its playability and also made it more challenging. The championship-caliber layout features strategically placed bunkers, including some Scottish-style sod-faced ones, and tricky water hazards on several holes. The hilly terrain offers both challenging elevation changes and scenic views. The golf course finishes with a long par 5 that plays across a canyon of berms to a narrow fairway. Further accuracy is needed to reach the well guarded green surrounded by high berms, a pot bunker to the left, and a deep, steep bunker to the right. In addition to the course, Makray Memorial G.C. boasts an extensive practice facility with 1 1/2 acres of grass teeing ground, two putting greens, and a short-game area.

great track
This is a great course for all levels. Women can paly it from their tees. I highly recommend playing this course...it is a great test
Beautiful Course!
great course, great condition, very challenging.
Beautiful Makray
What a glorious day! Perfect weather, and perfectly maintained course. This is a VERY challenging course from any tee box. We played the middle tees (silver), and the slope rating is still 131 with a course rating at 71.4!! The green complexes are fast - but fair, and the greens were softened by a recent rainfall. The bunkers are real sand (so many in Chicagoland aren't!) and the layout is just beautiful. This is Private club golf for a public fee. Go play here!!!
Great Greens
The greens were just aerated but that did not matter as each and every green in difficult and very quick. Very challenging Par 3's and overall course was in great condition.
Great day
Nice weather and good course. Greens seemed a bit off.
Maybe a couple to many "placement tee balls" for my liking.
Great layout
Challenging but fair
Greens alittle rough and sandy
Love to play it without a 20 mph wind
play quick before the rain
The course was in great shape and the greens were spectacular. One of the best public course I have played in a long time
Fabulous Day on an Outstanding Track
We had been wanting to play here for a while. Got a great deal on a weekday. Course was in great shape. Almost every hole was picturesque. We really enjoyed the challenging course on a beautiful day!! Can't wait to get back out there again soon !! :)
rained out
Couldn't play due to thunderstorms.
Test of skill
I come to courses like Makray to test how well I am really playing. I found out today that I need to be consistently in the fairway and below the hole. The course was in great shape. The rough was fair although I've seen it tougher here. The greens were in great shape and running nice, much nicer than any public course I've played this year. The pace was excellent, under 4 hours including a rain delay. Topped off with a great golf now rate.
Highly recommended
Makray Memorial Golf Club
The Good: Formerly on the grounds of Thunderbird CC, this beautifully manicured public course was completely renovated in 2004. Parkland layout, yet expansive off the tee with extremely small, challenging green complexes. Great course conditions and challenging, slick greens. Top-notch clubhouse with full restaurant, banquet area, and pro shop. Nice driving range and multiple putting greens. Very strong Par 5's, particularly on the closing nine. Decent value for quality of course and conditions in the northern Chicago burbs, especially in off-season. GPS on carts!
The Bad: Greens can be so fast and undulating that the average 10-handicapper will have nightmares. Service is only fair for a nearly $100 price tag. Par 3's are relatively boring and limited dogleg variation with the Par 4's. Peak season cost is a little steep compared to other courses in the northwest Chicago suburbs.
The Verdict: Makray Memorial is an upscale golf facility in many ways, but lacks that signature hole and upscale service. One of the best conditioned public courses in the entire greater Chicago area.A strong option in the North suburbs, but there are more fun options for less cash.
Best Hole: The long Par 4 #11 is a devilish hole that requires a long drive over water and an uphill approach to one of the smallest greens on the course.
Good shape for August......
Arrived at course on time......No waiting on the tee.....very nice pace of play......only a slight slowdown after 15 holes......still finished in 3 1/2 hours............Course in good shape despite the high humidity and temps recently. Well worth the effort to play here.
Makray Was There For The Taking
We got our special rate on Golfnow.com and excited about playing one of our favorite courses. The biggest challenge about Makray ar the greens and the slope of the fairways. Two of us managed two good rounds and the other two struggled. This course is all about course management and fast greens. we recommend this course to everyone. There are bottles of ice cold water every 4 or 5 holes.
Toughest Course I've played this year.
I haven't played this course since way before the rename\remodel.
I remember it as a concrete jungle.
Boy things have sure changed.
Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable.
Hot day and they provided bottles of water gratis.
I played this course from the 2nd longest set of tees.
I probably should have played at least up one more.
There is gorse, but it's just mostly to mess with your mind.
The fairways were tight and running.
The rough wasn't too penal.
It was a pleasure to see decent sand in the bunkers.
The real challenge was the putting greens - they are huge and run extremely fast, yet will hold a well struck shot into the green.
The safe play is to land short and let the ball run up
Local knowledge of the course will be a plus.
I've been playing a lot of tough courses, lately and the greens made this the toughest yet.
Good course
Only paid 24 dollars to play due to bad weather but it cleared up and turned out to be a beautiful day.
Good Course
This course was very nice. I liked that we were able to play in 4 hours unlike a lot of the courses in the Chicago suburbs. The greens were fast and have a lot of breaks to them but overall were true. The course conditions were overall very good and staff were friendly and helpful. I will play again for sure.
There are better courses for the money
The greens roll great! However, they are far too dry and do not properly hold a golf ball (so lots of leave it short and run it up). The course is the brownest course I have played all season. Consequently, it is hard to recommend a course that has rack rate of $92 when $50 - $60 are better maintained. The staff is not friendly and provide little, if any assistance, on where to find the range, practice area, etc. The course has complimentary bottles of water. However, this is only on hole 1, 6, and 10. Need water on 13 or 14 since beverage cart makes it around only twice in a round. The GPS is terrible! I question its accuracy. It would be better to provide yardage books. I like the course and will play again but never would I play for over $65, as it has too many problems to be worth more than that.
Early in Early Out
Teed off right on time and basically had the course to ourselves for the first several holes. Course tends to get busier after 9...8:10 tee time was perfect
Test of your game
This is our Test course because of the challenge it presents to aspiring and bragging partners. It can simply take the wind out of sail on certain holes if you make a dumb decision. Even when are on the green at wrong place, it will make you pay the price. fast and unpredictable contours on the green Back Tees are real test and all facets of your game got to be fairly well in order to shoot average score.
Staff is OK, pace is fine generally. Green sometimes are beaten up but still great value.
Poor
They treat you like second class citizens if you book through golf now, guy at front desk hardly said a word and ranger wasn't much better just drove right by us when we were only people sitting on the first tee. For the money they charge you think they would be a little friendlier. Great course greens were kind of beat up for this early in the year but like I said if you book though golf now don't look for much in customer service aspect
