Makray Memorial Golf Club

About
Makray Memorial Golf Club (formerly known as Thunderbird Country Club) is a public course that has been open since 1962. To commemorate 40 years of great golf, the course was remodeled and revamped in 2002. The renovations improved its playability and also made it more challenging. The championship-caliber layout features strategically placed bunkers, including some Scottish-style sod-faced ones, and tricky water hazards on several holes. The hilly terrain offers both challenging elevation changes and scenic views. The golf course finishes with a long par 5 that plays across a canyon of berms to a narrow fairway. Further accuracy is needed to reach the well guarded green surrounded by high berms, a pot bunker to the left, and a deep, steep bunker to the right. In addition to the course, Makray Memorial G.C. boasts an extensive practice facility with 1 1/2 acres of grass teeing ground, two putting greens, and a short-game area.

Golfer
Great layout and tough course . But the greens are very fast but are so beat up allready . Looked like greens in September. Lots of brown spots and beat up and should not be for the price they are asking .
Excellent Course in the Burbs
Highly recommend. Good off course amenities, beautiful. Greens are tough but a joy to play
LADIES DAY
Not sure how many woman's lg course has but someone needs to address extremely slow play and that goes for any men's lg. at no time is 3+ hours acceptable for 9. and someone needs to tell any lg and all players to PLEASE RAKE BUNKERS. not worth the time and $$ unless you like playing 5+ hours for a round
The greens were ridiculous
The pin placements were so tough, and the greens, so lighing fast, it was not much fun on the greens. I thought the t-boxes were hurting pretty badly too. But it sure if a pretty course.
Tough greens!
Greens were a bit beat up but rolling well. Fairways were fine. Tee boxes could've been better. Still a great course and layout.
Slow play
We were stuck behind a league and was nearly 3 hours for 9 holes till the league was over!
We called more than 3 times to the clubhouse and actually pace of play slowed even more when the ranger told the league to move quicker
Poorest etiquette of a league very selfish and treated the other golfers with total disrespect
Don’t ever come here during league play
League play
Unfortunately this was the worst round I played in ages you literally sat on the tee box for 15-20 minutes waiting for the league to play 9 holes.
There were more than 5 singles playing in the league and the 2 groups in front of us had no etiquette leaving cart 50 yards from the green and then walking back and leaving carts in front of the green
Basically the league was going to play 9 holes in 3 hours and let the other golfers suffer
We called 3 times for assistance they kept saying at the clubhouse it was league play. Shame on Makray for not letting you know when booking that it was league day. At the end they really didn’t care about the other golfers. I played here many times last year and nothing was as horrible as this day
Sneak out of the office and play on Mondays
Makray Memorial Golf Club consistently delivers a top-tier golf experience, easily making it a standout in the Chicagoland area. Our recent Monday morning round, teeing off at 8:30 AM (after an 8:00 AM first tee time), was a testament to their excellent pace of play, as we comfortably finished in under four hours.
Course Conditions (4/5)
While a couple of greens were recently sanded—a common and necessary maintenance practice—the course was otherwise in excellent condition. The bentgrass tees, fairways, and greens are generally well-maintained, providing a true and enjoyable playing surface. The bluegrass roughs are fair, adding a strategic element without being overly penal.
Layout & Challenge (4.5/5)
This isn't your average flat course; Makray offers a dynamic and engaging layout. Expect significant elevation changes, strategic bunkering, and water hazards that demand precise shot-making. The course intelligently tests your management skills with a diverse mix of holes, from strategic par-4s to challenging par-5s, all aided by helpful on-cart GPS.
Amenities & Staff (4/5)
The clubhouse, with its "old world manor" charm, offers impressive views and a welcoming atmosphere. The practice facilities are excellent, featuring a grass driving range and multiple putting greens perfect for warming up. The staff, from the pro shop to the course marshals, are generally friendly and efficient, contributing positively to the overall experience.
Value (4/5)
While Makray's green fees can be on the higher side, especially during peak times, the quality of the course, its generally good conditions, and the strong amenities justify the investment. Consider twilight or later afternoon rates for exceptional value.
Overall Impression
Makray Memorial Golf Club is undeniably a strong championship course. Its picturesque setting, challenging yet enjoyable layout, and excellent pace of play (as experienced on our Monday morning) make it a highly recommended choice. Despite minor, routine maintenance, the course delivers a solid golfing experience that showcases its potential as a truly exceptional Chicagoland destination.
Beautiful Sunday
4-some in front of us was a little slow, but we managed. Played with a couple from Peoria who turned out to be very nice people to golf with. As usual the greens were very challenging. Bring your A-game and play from the correct T's at Makray.
A Hot Deal and a good one.
Booked using a Hot Deal on GolfNow. For mid-May it is in great shape. It was a cold, raw day but very playable. Greens were fast but not unreadable. Bunkers were consistent. Lots of water and wetlands so keep it in the fairway. Club House is like a country club, wouldn't expect anything less in Barrington. Taking my girlfriend there for dinner tonight. We paid $66/person, green fee and cart. You'll be paying up though when the summer hits high gear.
Starter has no communication with pro shop, checked in online got a confirmation to go to starter, starter says we need to go inside to check in, pro shop says you don't need to come in go to the starter. Pace of play extremely slow stuck behind 4 groups the whole time. Clubhouse and pro shop reeked of curry. Strange that there’s no half way house and you have to walk through the dining room to get a hot dog at the bar. Putting greens were fast, fairways narrow and unforgiving. Superintendent should take care of the weeds that are growing everywhere. Personally not worth a dollar over $65 for 18.
Nice course but slow
Very nice course and layout. Pace was unbearably slow. Range is kind of expensive for what you get.
