The Raptor Preserve
Raptor Bay was part of my 4-some's regular rotation. I really looked forward to playing there and I was very sorry to see it go. I was anxiously awaiting the opening of SaltLeaf and looking forward to this round, It is a completely different course. What I liked: The Staff is top notch and everyone here is professional and it shows. The pro shop is very well done and is well stocked, The restaurant has retained the chef and this place aways had one of my favorite cheeseburgers and I enjoyed a great burger, fries & cold beer on this day! The staff at the bar also top notch. The greens are excellent , fast, true and hard to hold. Speed was consistent on all 18 greens, Nice job here. The fairways are perfect , no bad lies on these fairways. Tee boxes all good. I did not like the driving range part of the practice area, Raptor had a really nice driving range and this was a disappointment. The putting area part of the practice range I really liked. It represented the green speed on the course very well. I found holes # 2 & # 3 to be confusing for the 1st timer and was fortunate that the starter took the time to advise on strategy & landing area. #11-17 were all fairly easy & I found the SL back nine less challenging than the old RB back nine. Overall I had a really nice day but miss Raptor Bay.
Good but not outstanding
Very nice course but felt like it was underwhelming for the price I paid. Outstanding conditions but just felt cookie cutter.
Great course, better people
Beautiful track, remarkable shape for being week 3 of its existence. I will also say I’ve never met friendly staff at a golf course of this calibre.
Solid Track
The course is in fantastic shape and the greens rolled very nice. The bunkers definitely add a ton of character to the course. I am looking forward to playing in again now that I’ve played it once. The $220 greens fee is a bit aggressive, but if you ignore the price, it’s a fun day. There are no holes in the putting green which completely sucks. Also, the driving range is turf into a net. Not the best experience. The practice facility gets a C-. The course gets an A.
Nice course but….
Could not give a 5 star as the cost is too steep. Not worth the 299 compared to other course you can play in that range. Staff was great, bar was great and the greens were great. Layout is boring and the par 3’s had no flare so if you’re a golfer the course itself is not worth the money. Not sure I will try it again unless the price drops in the summer. I recommend if you don’t care about value. This is 149- 175 course.
best course in SWFL
i was a HUGE fan of Raptor Bay and expected this to stay up there with it but it blew it away completely. This is officially my favorite course in the area. I've never in my life looked a bunker and thought it was cool and this course feels like you're in England with how they designed them. Its absolutely, top to bottom, one of the coolest course I have ever played. cant wait to go back.
Beautiful Resort course-quite easy
The course was beautiful and even though it’s fairly new, the greens and fairways played as though they were mature. The course is VERY forgiving. Fairways are very wide, there are no sand bunkers, just waste areas which are easy to hit off. Many of the waste areas are bordered by sod walls to knock the ball back onto the course. And the greens are the size of Texas. I scored pretty well considering I have never played the course before, but when I entered my score into GHIN, I realized that it was a terrible score given the slope and rating. If you want to shoot a low score and feel good, this is a place to do that. If you play here often, I suggest playing the course longer than you normally would or your handicap will end up going up.
A quandary
Played in the wind and 50° cold so that did not help my impressions of the course. Pace of play was excellent since I was the only idiot on the course in these conditions. Staff is super friendly, the course is in immaculate shape but visually it is very bland. With little or no definition between fairway and greens and very little rough it is hard to pick out a spot to aim for since everything looks the same. Makes it tough to get comfortable with your distances. The waste areas are easily played out of and the revetted bunkering is a nice touch. Hitting off of matts in the truncated practice area is only good for a quick warm up. I understand that paying customers get a hat and mug possibly, I guess $150 didn't get me to that level. May try it again on a warmer day.
Fun Time
After a few tough beginning holes the course opens up and plays nicely. The waste bunkers weren’t really a problem. Greens were very firm since they were new by that is to be expected. The negative is that the greens fee of almost $240 is quite high.
Great golf course
I really enjoyed playing here. The staff was very friendly and the course was in awesome shape. It was the right blend of challenging holes and golf shots coupled with opportunities to score. I would recommend this course to anyone and would play it again someday. I am a 13 handicap and played the blue tees which was the right choice.
Not Worth the Money
Course is in great shape. Greens need to be quicker. New design is just okay with some interesting holes. Seems they could have left more trees in on the new holes. Par 3s were especially boring. The berms outlining the waste areas are a nice touch. No practice area except a netted area is a negative especially since Raptor Bay had such a good practice area.
Won’t go back to play at the price point.
Saltleaf Preserve
I played this course in the past when it was known as Raptor Bay. Changes have been made to the layout and a new back 9 was recently opened. The course was in excellent condition, the staff was super attentive, and the pace of play was outstanding with a 3 hour round for our 2-some. The recent improvements and changes made it a much better course. The price was a bit high for a mid-week round in late November, but the expierence was first class
Good
Not a challenging course nor layout. Had a 16 man outing in front of me, so as you can imagine slowed the round done to 2 1/2 hrs. Greens are very nice but are on the slow side. Nice round.
Re-imagined Raptor Bay
We played Raptor Bay in the past and the redesign did not disappoint. The course is in stunning shape and the drink and lunch we had in the bar after was awesome. Staff was extremely welcoming and did a great job explaining the course layout ahead of our round.
Saltleaf IS Raptor Bay Upgraded
I fear change and thus was apprehensive about Raptor Bay being renovated. Firstly this is for the most part an entirely different course. The holes previously used by Raptor play differently currently. For instance old number one is now three, still a par 5 however you play it backwards, from old green to old tee. The vast majority of Saltleaf is comprised of brand new, previously undeveloped, land. The course is beautiful, challenging, but fair. I appreciate and enjoyed the aesthetic of the grass berms utilized throughout the remodel. The only criticism i have pertains to the practice facilities. It is a netted hitting area and practice putting green. I was unable to garner much feedback from my swing in such a confined space. The old practice facilities at Raptor were far superior…alas it appears that area will become a tower. Overall the course is excellent, and stands out in an area replete with mundane courses. I recommend. Hopefully the practice facilities will be upgraded to match the quality of the course, particularly for the price.
