Lake Presidential Golf Club is one of Maryland's most popular public courses. It is a challenging championship layout that is player friendly enough to accommodate a wide range of skill levels. It stands out from run-of-the-mill municipal courses with exceptional conditions from the tees to the greens. The layout offers a diverse mix of holes that will have golfers using every club in their bag. There are some especially interesting par 3s that are visible but with enough hazards to make them a challenge. Houses border the front nine holes but they are absent on the back nine. The fairways on the last nine holes are densely lined with mature trees. The golf course finishes with an enjoyable par 5 that plays over a lake. It can be reached in two with a little skill and accuracy.

Dear Jackd213,

Please accept my sincere apologies for our current poor conditions. Please also know that we are pursuing an aggressive agronomic recovery plan to restore LPGC to the level of conditioning you deserve. I am pleased to report that this project has the full support the course ownership. Once we get the job done, I look forward to welcoming you back for a premium playing experience.

Worst condition EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT PLAY.

This course was said to be one of the best and I should play it. TOTALLY WRONG. The fairways are SO BAD that it needs to be closed and rebuilt. It may have been great in the past but this summer heat has destroyed, yes I said destroyed the course. It is so bad I honestly cant believe that they charge you money to play. I know that we can not control the weather but it is that bad. Very sad to see any golf course look this bad. The layout could be great but its just too far gone. I would post a picture but do not have the heart to do so and am only writing this to keep others from being blind sided like I was.

This course needs to close

This course lost its fairways for the most part in the recent deluge. It's a mess. Shouldn't be open at this time. They gave us $25 off coupon for next round. No way I'll return. This used to be a beautiful course. What a terrible tragedy.

PS. When I made the tee time by telephone nothing was said. After driving 45 minutes to play, THEN at the pro shop I was give a long speech about the conditions, "looks worse than it is." HA! Wrong.

Very bad condition

the course is in an extremely bad condition with mold. you could never imagine a golf course with such condition. it was difficult to find a decent place in fairways. I felt almost half of fairways are dead with black molds.

I was upset all day playing golf(? hitting in a molded tee box, and busy finding a decent spot in fairways). How could they ruin the golf course which was one of the finest golf courses in DC area only a few months ago, and how do they take money($55) for this service.

I don't want to know and listen what's main culprit behind this disaster. But I do KNOW that there was a significant problem in the course management, and they should close the course until it restores at least to a playable condition.

This is my first course review in my life. I felt I had to share this information in order to prevent their ruining other's holidays.

The course is in bad shape!!!

The course was in pretty bad shape. From tee to green the course was moldy, wet and it was hard to find a decent place to hit from without that disgusting mold splashing in your face..

The course is actually so bad they should consider shutting down until management decides what to do. A couple of the traps had so many rocks, I refused to hit out them. There were tee boxes that were sectioned off because the tee box was so bad.

By 11 or so, the mold started to smell and I have one allergy and it’s mold, so I suffered on the back. I would have taken a picture, but it was quite embarrassing so I decided to forego the memory..

Tee to green problems

I've played this course many times and this is the first time I have ever seen it in such poor condition! There are problems from tee to green on most holes. Tee boxes are roped of with small section to hit from. Most fairway are burned out and crunchy with many circled in white as ground under repair. Leaving you to search for a patch of grass to place your ball. Greens were aerated but rolled okay, the better part of course. Staff blames the ground keeping staff for the problems but continue to charge a premium price for their sub par course! Five star public course gone down to one star! Side note, course looks surprisingly familiar in condition to Marlton Golf Course that's down the road and once managed by Billy Casper Management Group before it was run into the ground and sold. Marlton now under new management is back and looks good. Maybe they took the same staff to Lake Presidential!

I am not sure what happened to this course, but it should be closed until they decide what they are going to do.

I have one allergy and its mold, since most of the holes had mold from tee to green, it was a rough round and I could not get motivated even though I was paired with a good group.

Even at a reduced rate, the course is just not worth it…smh

Bad Condition / Construction off-course

I was excited to give this course a try but left disappointed and discouraged by the prospects of public golf in the greater DC area. The course conditions were not good. Several tee boxes and parts of each fairway (including collections areas around the green) were unplayable with dead grass. Maintenance has not kept up with the summer weather, which I know lack of rain and humidity makes it tough, but its not like a hot, dry humid summer month should come as a surprise. Greens were also in disappointing shape. They were really beat up, some of it the golfers fault for dragging shoes across the greens and not fixing ball marks. Pace of play was really bad, waits on every hole. The area surrounding the course also made the round unpleasant. There is a lot of home development and construction off the course, so don't come here expected a pleasant quiet round out in nature. Overall I was disappointed and will not be coming back.

Dear Golfer, Thank You for taking the time to communicate. We have had some major conditioning challenges in late July and have tried to get out in front of the issue by taking pro-active agronomic measures include aeration, verti-cutting and seeding. I promise you, we will solve these problems and restore Lake Presidential to the conditioning levels our members and guests expect. I hope you will consider revisiting us once we accomplish this. Respectfully,

What Happen

Several years ago this was one of the best golf courses in Maryland. This was one of my favorite courses. It pains me to see the shape this course is in. For the last several years it looks like the money has been put into building houses around the course instead of keeping the course in shape. The fairways and tee boxes were some of the worse I have ever seen. I will try again next year, in hopes that this course comes back.

A great course gone horribly wrong

I've played here several times over the past 6 years. This is my first time this year. I was shocked and disappointed at the deplorable condition of the course. It was not worth the $65 fee for a 2:30pm tee time; we were the only players on the course and for good reason. Most of the fairways and tee boxes look like ground under repair without being designated as such. When a course is in such bad condition, the staff should, out of courtesy, warn patrons of what to expect and the price should be significantly reduced. This was a rip-off.

Conditions have suffered badly: fairways almost unplayable

What has happened to this course this year is a tragedy. Lake Presidential has one of the best layouts of any course within about 100 miles of DC, and for several years it was in great shape, too; back then it was worth the ~$95-105ish green fees. That hasn't been true for at least two or three years, as the conditions have suffered badly.

Constant home construction around the course had made the area much busier (and louder) in recent years, but I'm not as bothered by that as many players seem to be. That said, it seems there's now a community center and/or pool in close proximity to the course, and there literally wasn't one moment in my entire round where I was unable to hear the booming music and screaming children.

I played at 4:30 pm on a Saturday when it was 100 degrees, so the course was nearly empty. I don't know what pace of play is like when it's a little cooler or earlier in the day, but it can't help that several holes are essentially cart path only because either the whole fairway or significant part of it amounts to ground-under repair. The back nine is frankly an embarrassment and should be closed until it can be returned to playable condition. The fairways on 10, 14, and 15 are made of mud.

Tee boxes around the course are also in very poor condition. The greens are still good, though not so smooth as they have been; my sense is that other players don't feel compelled to fix ball marks when they're playing on a course where it looks like no one else cares. I didn't hit balls before my round yesterday, but the practice area has always been one of the good things about this course.

In my very limited interactions with them, staff were very nice; what the course is suffering from isn't their fault.

I'm so disappointed by what this place has become. Lake Presidential was the place that I played more rounds than any other in 2011 and 2012, I think, and I've always loved the layout. But I would have a very hard time going back unless something dramatically changed—like fixing the conditioning or cutting rates by 50%. It's especially galling when Renditions, just five miles away, weathered its own rough patch and is back to being in great shape—and costs less, too.

Dear Golfer,

Thank You for taking the time to write. We have experienced significant turf loss on portions of our fairways and the problem, as you note is especially acute on holes 13 thru 15. In the past five days, we have verticut and seeded these fairways [and others] which is why we have asked our patrons to observe the path only restrictions. I promise you, we will restore premier conditioning levels at Lake Presidential all appropriate seeding, fertilization and strategic watering but it will take some time for positive and progressive germination. Cool Nights will definitely speed this process. We do hope you'll consider a return trip to Lake Presidential once we get things right. I am happy to explain all proactive measures we're taking in person or on the phone.

Better options for the money

I've played a couple of enjoyable rounds with friends at Lake Presidential, but cannot recommend it at the $85 rack rate, or even the modest twilight discounts.

The course is on a grand scale, with hardly any holes visible from each other, and the houses are set back a comfortable distance from the fairways, overlooking but not intruding. The layout here is more interesting than Oak Creek, and LP has a much more upscale feel (although I can't say either is worth the rack rate).

Some fun holes here. I enjoyed the first par 5 (no. 3), with a blind tee shot followed by another blind, precarious downhill approach for longer hitters trying for the green in two, as well as nice contoured fairway and some bunkering to provide a challenge on a lay-up as well. The ninth is a pretty par 3 over water heading back to the clubhouse.

I also enjoyed the par 5 13th, and the 14th (a par 4), two strong holes that put a premium on good position off the tee.

A ditch meandering through the property comes into play on several tee shots, often taking driver out of the hands of most players. The greens had a good amount of slope, and would be a nice challenge if they were rolling fast and true.

My major frustration with the course was related to conditioning. Tee boxes and areas around the greens were constantly patchy, and many holes had absurdly thick rough. I don't mind a few areas under repair, but for the price I would expect more.

Compared to area neighbors like Enterprise or University of Maryland, I don't think LP holds up, especially when price is considered. I would like to give it another chance, but it needs to deliver more of a "premium" experience to justify the price tag.

For a splurge round, I'd sooner head to 1757 or one of the daily-fee places off of I-270.

Another great round

Played Lake Presidential for the 3rd time this season and thought it was good time to review. This course is one my favorites in the DC area. The reasons for this are :

Great layout-Challenging setup which requires thinking as you get around

Staff- Always got a smile on their faces, they look like they truly enjoy working there

Conditions of the course- Given the amount of rain we have received, very impressed with the course, there are few tee boxes under repair but all in all very good.

Lake Presidential Review

Considering this course seems to regularly place in the top 10 courses in multiple publications, I was a bit disappointed. During my visit to the DC area I played three top courses and this was in the roughest shape. The greens were solid but the rough was extremely spotty and the fairways were average. It was a bit early in the season but compared to the other courses I played two days before it was behind the curve. The layout however was fun and challenging. The green on 11 was near impossible to hit as it was elevated, quite small and the sides were shaved. That was the only spot I found the course to be "unfair". For the price I would say there are better courses in the surrounding DC area.

Great Course.....When it dries out !!

Played this course after it had rained pretty steadily for the past week. I really like the layout of the course and it is a fair test of golf that will make you hit every club in the bag.

The greens were in fantastic condition and I can't imagine how fast they will play when they dry out a bit because they were rolling quite fast for being so wet. All the putts manage to roll out those few extra feet which I actually like being a more tentative putter.

The price was pretty fair and inline with what I would have expected to pay. If i was to have my golf buddies in town to play a few rounds, this course would be on the list.

great layout but tough course

Lake Presidential is one of the two best golf courses in southern Maryland. Course is in great shape, layout is really interesting. The problem, at least for us duffers, is this is a difficult course. Hilly, tricky pin placement, etc. do not offer many opportunities for a respectable score. Nonetheless, go play it!
