Dry as a bone
Apparently you don't water the fairways. The Greens were nice. The bunkers were well kept. The layout is crazy. Definitely need a cart. The rough is cut short, but it's the fluffy stuff where you can't see your ball because it is hidden. If you're not on the fairway, you're probably going to lose your ball unless you want to take forever to look and then the ranger will jump on you as he should for taking too long, I quit
poor condition
See my email response. Great layout. Course in poor condition. Fairways were infested with crabgrass, bare spots and apparent insect infestation (chinch bugs or mole crickets). Unmowed rough, leaving many players searching for balls near fairway. This resulted in unecessary delays in play. First time to this course with no gps, made club decisions and shot planning difficult. Greens were slow and inconsistant, many had crabgrass.
I have played many military courses throughout my career. Some high profile like Hickam AFB and Pearl Harbour. With this being the Presidents course, I really expected a lot more. I was expecting a country club level course, not a public course restoration project.
Review
I played the South Course. Since this is a military course, I first had to go to the visitors center at the main gate to obtain a pass, which turned out to be a big problem because the pro shop was required to submit a request and was late in doing so, and this required me to jump through a bunch of hoops. The situation was finally resolved and I drove to the golf course and thankfully was one of the few golfers on the course. The fairways were not quite ready for summer rules so I played lift, clean and place. The greens were medium speed, held the shots well but were a bit ragged on some holes. The tees were not level but had adequate grass. The bunkers were the best part of the golf course, with plenty of sand that was well raked and maintained. I ended up paying about $44, after a 20% Golfnow discount. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this course to other golfers because of the visitor center hassle and probably won't return to play the East course.
Nice Course
We played the south course it was our first time out there. The course was in great shape and very well kept. Our main issue was that we did NOT know that once you leave the clubhouse, you don’t pass it again until you finish the round (there is no “turn” past the clubhouse.
And out on the course, there were no water jugs and no trash cans…there was one bathroom we passed twice, which ended up having a water refill spout which was good. But we passed it early and late in the round so without knowing it was our only option, we were a long time without water.
So mainly the staff needs to make people aware of what’s available (or not available) once you get started. And he did know it was our first time as he has to give us directions to get to the first tee box.
Outside of this, I would say it was a nice course and we would return.
Back after many years
Overall course is very playable. Greens are in great shape, tees and fairways playable although some dry and rough patches in places. The rough is thick and best shot is to recover and keep it in play. Definitely will return.
Great greens, fair fairways
The greens were very consistent, not too fast, but consistent. The fairways need some attention; the grass is inconsistent and appear to have a wide range of grass (or some weeds) that made their look and play less than ideal.
First Time Playing Andrews
Overall the course is quite scenic. Not the best course for a beginner as most holes are par 4 or 5. Lounge and pro shop are quite nice and hospitable.
Great Round
Upon arrival we were greeted by the friendly staff, who helped get our group situated. We played the South course, the pace of play was fast and the course was in good shape even after the heat wave. Will definitely come back to play the other course.
Too hot for this place
Over 100 degrees with the heat index and no water in sight. There was no water past the 2nd hole, and no beverage cart or availability at the turn. Course was pretty burnt and no shade on the back 9.
Worth the cost
Andrew's lost one course for new Air Force 1 hangar, so holes have shifted. But this course is still an easy course to walk if you choose.
Fairways in bad conditions
Several tee boxes closed and others need a lot of work. The fairways were in bad condition.
