Back Again!
Oak Creek always presents a challenge especially the back 9 par 5s. Fairways are in great shape, although a few rough spots on the 18th. Tee boxes overall in good shape need to attack some weedy grass that has invaded a number of tee boxes. Greens overall in good condition. My biggest frustration with the greens is not the greenskeeping staff but rather the many players who seem to be so privileged they dont repair their ballmarks. These could be some of the best greens in the area if players would take just a second and repair their mark.
Friendly Staff, Awesome Design, Poor experience.
First and probably last time playing this course. First off, the staff was awesome. Super nice cart girl, welcoming staff, and quick service when we got there. We went and hit some balls at the range. The range is super short. We couldn’t hit anything over a 5 iron without it going into the woods. The balls were freshly washed which was appreciated. The putting /chipping green was a bit over grown and extremely small. No holes, only pins. But we weren’t going to let that ruin our round. The overall design of the holes are great. Super cool concepts with a lot of long narrow fairways. The course plays way longer than it says on the score card. The fairways were in surprisingly good shape considering they didn’t have any sand to pour into divots. The greens had some really cool shapes even had a crescent moon design with a bunker in the crest. Carts had no gps, just pictures of the green terrain. You have to drive for like 5 mins to get to the second hole. You literally drive across the street, through a tunnel, and then through a neighborhood. I can’t imagine anyone would ever walk this course because you have to walk what feels like a mile between some of these holes. It took us 5 1/2 hours to finish our round because we had a group of people infront of us who were not only playing slow, but giving literal golf lessons in the middle of the fairway. Knowing that they had a faster playing group behind them, they still decided to give lessons in the middle of the fairway and hold us up. Super inconsiderate! It seems like this course used to be a really nice private course that opened to the public and went down hill. Greens were all cut up and in terrible condition. No one was fixing their ball marks. Overall, the course isn’t bad and it has some cool things about it. But I don’t have time to drive 1 1/2 hours and then play a 5 1/2 round because people are hitting 3-4 balls off the tee. Not bad for the money but this course should honestly cost like $30-40 a round.
Great Shape, Good Weekday Rate, Layout is a bit Hokey
Played on a Monday morning. First time at the course. Very quiet and I zipped around. Overall, conditions were really good, relative to others in the DMV, and I give them big props for this. Tee boxes were slanted, but they were well groomed. Weekday rate ($75) was good. My heartburn is with the course layout. It’s a course that winds through a neighborhood. I’m generally not a fan of this style because they are often hokey and borderline unfair, and this course fit that bill. Super narrow tree-lined holes. Some long Par 4s with such small landing zones you have to club absurdly down off the tee. Multiple par 5s are insanely long, and so much dog leg you have to hit driver or wood in the perfect location, otherwise you’re in the woods. I hit long iron on too many holes. If this doesn’t bother you, you’ll prob enjoy the course. But if you’re a good player, it will leave you frustrated and laughing at the absurdities of many of the holes.
Golf pass issue
The course was great. Unfortunately I can’t say the same for the golf pass reservation process. I clicked on a gp deal and when I clicked “book” I got a message that the time was no longer available. My credit card was charged. Then I searched for another time only to find out the time I tried to book was available at the regular price. I even searched a bit later to give the cyber gremlins time to clear the time but it was still there. I did get a refund on my card but I’m not happy with GP. What’s up with that?
I love this course and the staff!
Oak Creek is a gem but always a test. It’s starts off with 2 easy par 4’s to get you warmed up but then gets tougher as you go. Depending on the position of the flag on the “potato chip” shaped green can make 2 putts a challenge. The back nine has forced carries with woods on both sides. If ur not sharp with your irons, best to lay up and wedge in but, if ur playing well there are opportunities to score. One of my favorites in PG County. Worth the play but try to find a bargain time if u can, gets a little pricey early.
Sad decline
I don’t know what happened to oak creek this year but they’ve completely let it go. Green on 1 is a disaster, fairways are ok but a lot of brown spots, greens generally are beat up. I fixed probably 10 pitch marks on every green. Pretty disappointed given the quality of the course that can be there for the price. I hope this is just a bad time for them and not generally a decline. They’ve let the whole grass driving range are go as well. Just old, poor quality mats.
Sunday Golf
Always a good time. Course was a backed up on a hot day
Review
This course weaves it way through a housing development and lots of wooded areas, so there are great distances between many of the holes, making it a difficult course to walk. The greens held very well and putted at average speeds. Most of the fairways had nice and lush zoysia grass. Most of the bunkers had adequate sand. There were four sets of men's and two sets of ladies tees, which accommodates most golfers. I would have preferred to have seen bent, as opposed to zoysia grass on the tees. This is a definite must play course, if you are looking for one you haven't played.
Patchy fairways
Big areas of GIR on about half the fairways and more than handful of greens have patchy areas..pace of play was great bc never caught up to people in front of Us...
The front desk guy is much better this time unlike last round ..Can't remember his name but great customer service he get it.
