The golf course at the Colorado National Golf Club is an 18-hole, public course that is situated just 20 minutes north of Denver. Jay Morrish designed the formerly known as Vista Ridge golf course with a traditional links-style layout. The course covers 7,579 yards of golf from its longest tees and plays to a par of 72. Rolling fairways lined with native grasses and large, undulating greens make the golf course interesting, while beautiful views of snow-topped mountains provide pleasant scenery. The course has many bunkers as well as water hazards. Colorado National Golf Club also features five sets of tee boxes for golfers to work on a number of different handicaps.

Don't play

I read the reviews hoping they were wrong. The course is a glorified cow pasture at best. The greens were rolling around 12. Not due to being rolled and true but due to the lack of actual grass. The pro shop staff has to be the worst I have ever experienced. I grew up in NC playing Pinehurst and Piper Glen to name a few. If you are looking to play a weed infested golf course and be insulted at the same time then Colorado National is for you.

Home of The Buffs

Another great day at CNGC. New superintendent doing great job. And the plant & flower guy deserves a shout out! Greens rolled true despite invasion of poa annua(?). And where can you play a Jay Morrish course with views of snow-covered Long's Peak on an 80-degree, sun-filled day with cart and GPS for under $50! Colorado is the best!

One of my Favorites!

I love this course. Great layout and the golf staff is super friendly. Brought out clients and the pros were very friendly and funny. Weather was a bit rainy so it wasn't busy. Course was in great shape. Always a good value here as well even though company paid for it.They have new carts which are really cool with GPS which I love since I hit it so crooked.

Unpleasant Ranger

Playing on a overcast rainy morning with moderate to high winds, you would think pace of play wouldn't be an issue. That was not the case for our group. By the third hole we had an unpleasant older man (50-60's) waiting for us. As we walked off of the green he told us in a stern voice that we were 12 minutes behind pace of play. Seeing that there was nobody in front of us and a group two holes behind us, we were confused on why pace of play was even an issue? A gentleman in my group acknowledged that fact to the "Ranger" and told him to relax. The ranger snapped back "NO YOU RELAX" and told us to pick up our pace and that he'll be back! He continued to hover around our group the rest of the front nine. Our group got so fed up with this man, we decided to quit after nine. (After paying $60 a person for golf and another $60 between our group for food and drinks). Needless to say, most of us will not be back!

Thank you for the feedback! We are sorry your day didn't get well. We are trying to make a conscious effort to improve our pace of play. We will certainly use your comments with our ranger staff to help them get better. Please let us know if you would like to try us again. Would love to have you back David!

Thanks for the feedback Chris! We have to reverse the 9's at times for maintenance as well as some 9 hole leagues we have. That way they don't always play the same 9.

Pace of play makes this course frustrating

I've taken advantage of two price specials to play this course now, and both times I've been unhappy with the result.

My most recent round took nearly 5.5 hours to finish. The previous time, we played 14 holes in 5 hours before it got dark. WHY does this course take so long? There are no rangers to enforce the pace of play. We waited on every shot the whole round.

To start off, the tee boxes are nicely maintained, and the fairways are very nice. Most are fairly wide, and if you play from the correct tee box, should have little trouble maintaining the pace of play. Even the rough isn't too bad. Stray too far, however, and you're in the native grasses, which you must keep the cart out of. The course has a nice mix of holes to hit driver and lay up with an iron. The sand traps I was in were nice - I was in several.

The greens, however, are atrocious. Read all of last year's reviews about the greens - they're still true. Your ball is airborne as much as it is rolling when you putt. The greens are pretty hard, too. I broke a ball mark repair tool on the 3rd or 4th green.

And you'll want to have exact change for the beverage cart. The girl I spoke to said "they don't want us to carry change." How convenient for her to make an additional tip on any single purchase.

I want to like this course, since it's the closest to me and has decent rates occasionally. But I have to devote most of a day to do so! And the greens need a lot of work.

Thank you for the feedback. We certainly feel the greens are in great shape. If you play late in the day which it looks like you did the POA does get bumpy as it grows at a faster pace then the bent grass. We have not seen an issue with hard greens as we have had a very wet spring. Happy to have you out again on us to check out the course. We think you will see it is in great shape. Please let us know.

Terrible greens and the slowest play on the front range

I've played this course twice now, taking advantage of golfnow deals. Each time has required more than 5 hours to play. Last summer, we only got through 14 holes before losing light - and that was 4.5 hours after starting. This most recent round took nearly 5.5 hours! I think I'm done, despite it being the closest course to me, and 30 bucks with a deal.

I like the layout of this course, and it should be a fun course to play. The starter says to play "contact golf", keeping in contact with the group ahead. But nobody patrols. And you will wait on every shot.

The fairways are nice, well kept. As are the tee boxes, mostly. The course isn't difficult if you can keep your drives in or near the fairways. Go too far left or right, however, and you'll be in the native grasses. Don't get the carts anywhere near them - they'll stop working. Getting out of the grasses is hit or miss - you could be sitting with a clean swing, or have a clump of grass interfering.

The greens are an entirely different story - they're still terrible (read every review from last summer). The ball was bouncing on several putts. Almost the entire length of the putt! And they're hard as a rock, already! I broke a plastic ball mark repair tool. Some of the greens fine, others had tons of ball marks.

Oh, and the beverage cart doesn't carry coins for change, according to the girl I spoke to. How convenient for them - an extra 50 cents on any single beverage purchase. Don't think they didn't plan that on purpose.

You're better off spending more to golf somewhere else. These guys are clearly in it just to take your money.

Love this course

Normal Colorado weather (Wind and clouds) then it cleared up to be a perfect golf day on the back nine.

The course was in great condition although the greens we still a bit slow after being aerated a few week ago. But they were still very nice.

The rest of the course was in great shape as well and I love the new chipping area. I have always loved this course from the day it opened.

Nice layout

My first time playing Colorado National. Great layout! The holes are challenging and the views are beautiful. This is early season so the greens were a little funky(something is going on); but not bad. Fairways and tees were in great shape. It was a nice day and I tee'd off at noon, a 5 hour round. Again, early season, so they are under staffed. Don't stop at the break for food or drink. It takes way too long. The beverage cart came around on a regular basis.

Thank you for the feedback! The course in the spring gets the POA grass growing at a faster rate then the bent. It certainly is now in great shape. Sorry for the delay at the turn. We do have on cart GPS ordering which can speed up the process when you turn by having you order ready. Hope to see you soon.

Long Course

Very long course. Course conditions were decent. It was early season, however there was one green closed and the "hole" was on the fairway. The greens were also behind some other courses at the time. Fun setup to play.

Walked

Good course, nice layout, bonus length

We enjoyed this course with lots of length options for short to durn long (7676 y). Staff was friendly. For winter conditions, things were really quite good. Given a dearth of fellow golfers, we walked it, and it's long but doable; however, a packed course wouldn't make it reasonable. #3 had a temporary green ~60y short, which was a surprise. Still it putted reasonable well. For the back tees, the shortest par 3 was 202 by GPS. Longest hole was 686 by GPS, still reachable in 3. Greens rolled pretty well. Lots of nearby houses but far enough away. Full value. Recommended, especially if you find a deal.

Great views

Enjoyable course with multiple tees. Greens were bumpy and full of unrepaired ball marks.
Fairways are generous. We played as a twosome at 1:30 PM. Took us over 4 hours.
We did eat dinner at the course. Martinis we very skimpy. Food was average.

Much better than I remembered

Played here 3 years ago. It rained and spit snow on us and we nearly froze to death. When the weather cleared up we finished the round. Very dissappointing day.
Fast forward to the last week of Sept 2015. Beautiful weather, no wind, short sleeves. Perfect golf day no matter what course we played.
The views of the mountain range were breath taking on the back nine.
Tee to green:
Tee boxes were perfect. Some were a little spongy.
There were crews seeding, sanding, and leveling, something you don't see very often.
The fairways were plush. Very player friendly. The rough was fair....didn't want to be in it but not a round killer if you were.
The bunkers were all dressed and raked and actually had sand in them. Played other area courses with crusty hard pan that unfairly affected the round.
The greens were perfect. Not as slick as I would like but rolled true. They ask that you repair your ball mark and one other...this works because I found myself looking for a ball mark to fix and often could not locate one. Everyone must be doing the same. Makes for a fun day putting.
Pace of play was good. Played in 4 hours as a twosome behind a twosome. GPS tells you if you are behind...nice feature. The beer cart came by 4 times during the round. The club house and practice facilities top notch.

Playing note....Don't let the GPS hole review persuade you into going for the green on 17. Just hit it down the middle then a wedge to the green.

Greens are needing overhaul

The course states Bent grass greens, this is a dated statement. The greens are either overrun by poa annua, or simply cannot grow grass of any type. A temporary green on hole #3 was in play on Sept 11th, neither the starter or GPS system mentioned this, therefore two players hit to the green, surprise! This once was a terrific course but appears to have declined with no stop insight. At the grill a homeowner, overheard our comment and stated without any hesitation the level of dissatisfaction with the condition of the course and impact to surrounding property values.
