Colorado National Golf Club
About
The golf course at the Colorado National Golf Club is an 18-hole, public course that is situated just 20 minutes north of Denver. Jay Morrish designed the formerly known as Vista Ridge golf course with a traditional links-style layout. The course covers 7,676 yards of golf from its longest tees and plays to a par of 72. Rolling fairways lined with native grasses and large, undulating greens make the golf course interesting, while beautiful views of snow-topped mountains provide pleasant scenery. The course has many bunkers as well as water hazards. Colorado National Golf Club also features five sets of tee boxes for golfers to work on a number of different handicaps.

Colorado National Greens In Poor Condition
Overall, the course (tee boxes and fairways and roughs) were in good condition. However, the greens were the worst I've played on in years. Every green, except for one (no. 9), had numerous bare spots and the spots that did have grass were overgrown and had not been mowed for a few days. The tee boxes would have been better to putt on than the greens. I am a resident of the course and plan to do my practicing at the excellent practice facility, but I will be going elsewhere to get my playing fix in.
Warning! The Greens are terrible
I booked the tee time same day and got a great deal for late afternoon golf on a Sunday. We started at 4:15 and only finished 14 holes when the golf cart notified us to finish current hole and return to clubhouse at approximately 9 pm. The course is great however the play was soooo slow and nobody from the course cares. We never saw a marshal or ranger or players assistant. When we finished the first nine we were right at 3 hours and right in space with the group ahead of us. This issue is really minor compared to the "Elephant in the middle of the Room" nobody is talking about. The Greens are terrible! You go from hole to hole in a daze thinking "What happened to these greens? All the other courses greens this summer have been incredible, soft, and beautiful. What could have happened?
The condition is comparable to a freshly aerieated green with a healthy dose of sand. The ball jumps unpredictable every inch or two. When I got back to the clubhouse I asked the cart guy who was cleaning and parking carts." What happened to your greens"? He told me that 2 to 3 years ago a disgruntled investor/owner/partner vandalized the greens and they have struggled with them ever since. I asked how long will it take to return to a normal condition... and he replied " I don't know!".
I acknowledge that this is just information from a employee that may or may not be factual, however when you see the greens (all the greens) it looks like it makes sense. It is so sad because it is a great course.
Nice course - worth the money
My son and I played midweek and found the pace excellent, course challenging enough and lunch afterward was very good. I would recommend this course for $50 in Colorado to ride. A couple greens are in bad shape but overall the course is really taken care of well. Tough par 3's and long par 5's makes for a round worth playing.
Short Changed
Given the horrendous condition of the greens and paying $70 to play here was a mistake; uncontrollable circumstances no doubt for the greens condition but knowing this beforehand I would not have driven the 40 minutes from Denver. I thought someone might have informed our group when we arrived of the the greens and offered at least a discount, as I do feel we were "short changed"
Another great time at Colorado National
Friendly staff
Challenging course
Greens a little rough
Paired up as a single with very nice people(as always
Another very good round at Colorado National
Absolutely LOVE the lay-out, but...
This is a spectacular course with wonderful views, minimal "target golf" and no real gimmicky holes. Unfortunately, it has a bad reputation for slow play and, even worse, we witnessed why first-hand, taking almost a full 3 hours to play 9 holes!
There was nobody on the first tee when we checked in for a late Friday afternoon tee time, but we quickly found ourselves waiting on just about every shot on every hole from 2 through 9. The bottleneck started when the group in front of us appeared "out of nowhere" from the ladies' tee box on the 2nd hole - one that you can't even see from the men's tee boxes.
The fairways were in very good shape - no surprise there, considering the unusual spring and early summer weather. The rough however, was TOO rough, having been allowed to grow too high, in my opinion. It's tough enough to hit out of when it's mowed shorter, but the height of the grass made it too difficult to even find golf balls and just contributed further, I'm sure, to the slow pace of play.
Lastly, I don't know what the heck "happened" to the greens, especially at a course that was once rated very highly among Colo. facilities and also chosen by CU as its home venue. I can only suspect that they mowed them too short at some point (perhaps for a collegiate event last fall?) and they never fully recovered. We had a great recent growing season, but maybe it's been TOO wet? Regardless, the greens are sanded and rolled in an attempt to keep them faster and truer. I don't mind the patches of "Poa" grass, but unfortunately, they're among the only really "green" spots left on the greens.
I will continue playing this course on occasion, as it can be a somewhat challenging lay-out, is affordable and is also conveniently located. However, our recent round there convinced me not to consider their semi-private membership, based primarily on the slow play and the condition of the greens. Perhaps I'll reconsider next year if they can improve the slow play situation. They absolutely have to fix the greens, though, or else a once-great track will continue to approach pedestrian status.
Work to do on greens
Course from tee to green was extremely fun. Good change in elevation, and challenging placement of fairway bunkers. On the other hand, the greens were in terrible condition. For a golf course that is supposed to be the practice course for Colorado University, I don't understand how this happens. I would expect to find the quality of the greens on a poorly managed municipal course. Without the deal I found on GolfNow, it's embarrassing for them to charge as much as they do with the greens in their current condition.
A bit disappointed
It's obvious this course is geared more on its "membership" than the general public. Staff did not seem to care whether you were there or not. Tee time management was poor. The fairways and general course were in very good shape, but the greens were not in good shape at all. I'll if course go back eventually, but more because of the location and views.
Great course and Golf Now app saved us $
Great course. However there should have been a marshal on the course as we were a twosome that followed a five some and caught up with them on #10 and waited on every shot on back nine. Never saw a marshal the whole round.
Great clubhouse too.
I should've been paid for all the ads I watched
Charities on holes for a regular round? Way to many advertisements on the GPS in the cart. I will not play this course again for $40. The greens were terrible and the advertising was enough to make me tell the marshal I didn't appreciate it. Walk if you go and don't pay more than $25.
A Great Guest Experience
Two friends and I were in town for a conference and found the great deal CNGC offers after 4 PM. The course was an extremely great value for what we paid. It was in great shape, and the rain quit just as we parked the car. With a great variety of tee boxes, CNGC provided a challenging, yet playable course for an average player like myself. I did my usual damage, but my buddy was on course for an 85 or better when we finished 16. We had a group that was a little slow in front of us, and there were a few greens that needed attention. Other than that, I highly recommend a round at Colorado National!
Great Value, nice course
Excellent value for a top tier Denver metro course. A few of the greens were a little beat up, but other than that the course was in great shape. Pro shop guys were ok, but the F&B girls (bar and cart) were awesome!
Great course but slow slow slow
This was my third time playing Colorado National and the third time that we had a painfully slow round. This time our round took 5.5 hours...and we had a 9:09 tee time. How did they get so backed up so quickly?? The course was in great shape but until they can figure out how to manage the pace, we won't be back.
Best in the Area
This is the best course around between Longmont and Westminster. It's long, it's challenging, it's fun. Beautiful environment, great creativity. They are trying to grow new grass on the greens and unfortunately it is not taking, the greens are in BAD shape. Very sandy and patchy, we didn't even use the putting green so we did not develop bad habits. Tough to shoot low right now, reminds me of how tough it was to putt on Chambers Bay. If they could fix the greens, would be here all the time. The staff sucks though, very uppity and snooty. Haven't ever had a good experience in the Pro Shop.
US Open Potential
Excellent course for a U.S. Open!
USGA should consider this venue for a future U.S. Open.
Very good overall
The course was great overall, the greens were disappointing, especially considering the quality of the rest of the course and all the rain we've had. Pace of play was slow - waited on every hole.
How I spent my Father's Day
This was the first time I had played the course, but I did enjoy it. Some of the greens were bumpy but considering how I putt, I can't blame the greens.
It was a good value. Got a #39 special on Golf Now.
Unfortunately, I'm taking medication for Cancer and I think the heat got the best of me. I only finished 16 holes. Will play there again and recommend to others.
Awesome course
I could be biased cause I shot my all time best score 73 here today but it's a really fun challenging course and it's in great shape. Other reviews complain about the greens but they're fine. The were rolling quick and true as long as you hit your putt with speed to get it on line. Some greens have a little more poa annua than others which can make your putts a little bouncy but overall I thought they were great. Marshals were all very friendly. Younger staff in the clubhouse could have been a little nicer but can't complain too much. One thing though I hate their carts. The Gps systems in the cart will shut your cart down if you drive to close to the native grass and you'll have to reverse out at 2 mph even when you're just driving in the rough. It's very annoying.
Great place!
The staff was super accommodating! Course was in great condition!
