Colorado National Golf Club
About
The golf course at the Colorado National Golf Club is an 18-hole, public course that is situated just 20 minutes north of Denver. Jay Morrish designed the formerly known as Vista Ridge golf course with a traditional links-style layout. The course covers 7,579 yards of golf from its longest tees and plays to a par of 72. Rolling fairways lined with native grasses and large, undulating greens make the golf course interesting, while beautiful views of snow-topped mountains provide pleasant scenery. The course has many bunkers as well as water hazards. Colorado National Golf Club also features five sets of tee boxes for golfers to work on a number of different handicaps.

Good course, but rough shape
I like CO National in many ways: nice layout, good facilities. But it has consistent problems with course upkeep, and this round was a new low. The greens are uniformly awful, and many of the fairways were swamps. On top of that, my cart ran out of juice after nine holes, so I ended up walking in for a new one. This course is evidence of the hard times muni courses are up against these days, I guess.
Great layout but greens are terrible!
I just recently moved back to the area and Colorado National has always been a favorite track. The layout is challenging and conditions of course is great... except for the greens! It has been a long time since I've played on greens this bad. Hopefully it is a short term problem but I would not recommend it until the greens return to previous condition.
What happened
I have played this course several times this year, and this round was a complete disappointment. The greens were in horrible shape. Not sure what was going on, but several greens had bare dead spots, one green was so bad they had a temporary green. The green conditions made it nearly impossible to make a putt no matter the distance. Ive putted on aerated greens that polled better than these.
Greens are awful
the greens look shaggy and as though they need a hair cut. I haven't played on greens in their (poorly kept)shape for many years
Save your $ for a course in better condition
About 30% of the green surfaces were soil/pitted/bare. I will not play this course again. No mention of temp green on # 3 that was damaged 4 years ago or greens damage @ check-in. Fairways were in OK shape. Tee boxes were gouged and sand filled with no seed evident. This course was very nice in past but has gone off the rails. I can't believe CU has not pulled out. Certainly not up to a collegiate event. It's got to be embarrassing for staff to endure through this catastrophe. Played with a local that lives on the course and he won"t bring friends...it is that bad!!!
Great layout
The course has a great mix of long holes and short, only real complaint was that the greens were terrible, hole 3 has a temporary green in the middle of summer.
Could be better
Greens are horrible! The coarse has been very nice in years past. Greens are the worst I've played in the area. Took some clients out and was fairly embarrassing. Lots of options I could have picked from!
Great, Except for Greens
Everything about the course and experience was great, except for the greens. Many were in poor condition. Layout outstanding with lots of tee options. Would love to play agai when greens are in better shape.
Broccoli greens!
Course in horrible shape. Greens are worse. Would not recommend playing not worth the money.
Greens in Rough Shape
I was shocked to see that there was a 9 AM tee time available for Sunday morning on a Friday afternoon and figured something must be up. Well when I saw the condition of the 1st green I knew what was going on. All of the greens were in such bad shape, it was difficult to get a read on your lines. Also, one of the holes had a temporary green set up in the fairway due to the actual green being practically bare. According to the starter, they just hired a new superintendent and expect the course to be in great shape soon, but that certainly had no bearing on my experience that day. Also, the yardage on the card didn't even come close to matching the distance the tee boxes were actually playing from.
Great Layout. Greens NOT GOOD. Sand Traps NOT GOOD
I love the layout of the course. Very good course design & hazard locations. Greens were in very bad shape. Sand traps were hard pan. Staff are always friendly. Fairways were in good shape.
all is not green
Although the course layout is very good, and the tees and fairways are in good shape, the greens were terrible. I mean really terrible. It seems no one aerated the greens or repaired the greens from winter kill.
I would avoid this course until they have repaired all of the greens.
I simply cannot believe that the University of Colorado has to use this as its home course. How embarrassing!
One negative, the rest positive.
Great layout and course condition except a large number of the greens were in miserable shape.
Terrible greens
I had high hopes for this course, but was very disappointed in the condition of the greens. They were some of the worst greens I've ever played, and for the price that was unacceptable. One of the greens was in such bad shape that they had to set up a temporary green in the approach.
Colorado Nat'l
The course has a decent layout but the are very poor. The staff has a bad attitude! Don't waste your money playing here !
greens were terrible
have always enjoyed the course but the condition of the greens and bunkers were terrible. It will be a long time before i will be back
Colorado National Greens In Poor Condition
Overall, the course (tee boxes and fairways and roughs) were in good condition. However, the greens were the worst I've played on in years. Every green, except for one (no. 9), had numerous bare spots and the spots that did have grass were overgrown and had not been mowed for a few days. The tee boxes would have been better to putt on than the greens. I am a resident of the course and plan to do my practicing at the excellent practice facility, but I will be going elsewhere to get my playing fix in.
Warning! The Greens are terrible
I booked the tee time same day and got a great deal for late afternoon golf on a Sunday. We started at 4:15 and only finished 14 holes when the golf cart notified us to finish current hole and return to clubhouse at approximately 9 pm. The course is great however the play was soooo slow and nobody from the course cares. We never saw a marshal or ranger or players assistant. When we finished the first nine we were right at 3 hours and right in space with the group ahead of us. This issue is really minor compared to the "Elephant in the middle of the Room" nobody is talking about. The Greens are terrible! You go from hole to hole in a daze thinking "What happened to these greens? All the other courses greens this summer have been incredible, soft, and beautiful. What could have happened?
The condition is comparable to a freshly aerieated green with a healthy dose of sand. The ball jumps unpredictable every inch or two. When I got back to the clubhouse I asked the cart guy who was cleaning and parking carts." What happened to your greens"? He told me that 2 to 3 years ago a disgruntled investor/owner/partner vandalized the greens and they have struggled with them ever since. I asked how long will it take to return to a normal condition... and he replied " I don't know!".
I acknowledge that this is just information from a employee that may or may not be factual, however when you see the greens (all the greens) it looks like it makes sense. It is so sad because it is a great course.
