After half the groups had teed off and there was still 4 or 5 in front of us. And we were on time. Photo submitted by null on 09/25/2014
Pace of play
I was very much surprised and disappointed with no control of pace of paly. Event hough if was Saturday it took 6 hours to play. This is the worst case play in my life. Normally it would take 4÷4.5 hours ot worst case is 5 hours I realized that there was warning in golt cart to play quickly but there was no control. Delayed team played as they wanted without considering following team. . Delayed team problems are 1. Very poor in golf and even slow in play 2. Looked for the balls endlessly 3. Endless swing practice at the course 4. Brought children and delay. The course guide must check and give warning
and remove Delayed team if they delay endlessly.
Because of one Delayed team whole people at the course heavily suffer and loose valuable times.
This situation must be corrected
Thanks
Careful playing now
Course greens were getting aerated. I do understand the need, but not the failure to notify until arrival with a sign on the cash register. The “temporary greens” cut as much as 60 yards off holes and the greens were actually holes in the ground with a flag on the fairway. No actual green.
Fortunately, there was a no charge for the cart as a result. That was appreciated.
Tee boxes on many holes were none existent- just dirt. For the near future, this course would be a pass. Unfortunate, since it has been about 20 years since I played Van Cortland and was looking forward to it.
5:30h round of golf, nice playing partners
The pace of play at van Cortlandt is always a pain, but 5:30h for a round of golf is a disgrace. Tee boxes are just dirt on several holes and players don't fix pitch marks, adding to the slow greens.
The course itself is very accessible and a nice layout, staff is friendly and price is fair. Due to the proximity to the city and public transportation access there are a lot of players who don't play regularly.
Old Vanny needs a facelift.
As some may know, this is the oldest municipal course in the country. It accessible by subway or express bus. The course doesn't offer much in terms of services other than the usual hotdog, beer, of other beverage. The path is riddled with potholes, the greens are not up to parr with the other city courses and have plenty of un repaired ball marks . Most of the tee boxes are in horrible shape and I do hope they get better. I'm not even going to mention the sand traps and the constantly soggy fairways (holes 10-14).
There are some challenging greens on holes 7, 13, 17, and 18 along with 2 challenging par 5 (holes 2 and 12).
with that said, at some point they are going to have to bite the bullet and put some money into repairing and upgrading the course.
The Pace of play on the weekend is horrific. It's best if you play during the week.
Place looks better and better every time I come back to play
I have been play vancortlandt golf course for many many years. I play and practice here because it is very close to my house. I have seen this course at its complete worst. This golf season I would have to say it is the best this course has ever looked in all the years I have been playing here. It is a municipal course and gets a lot of play and a lot of Amateurs who come and beat the course up. But the new superintendent and his small crew have really been cleaning the course up and bringing it back to life. My only complaint is they need more rangers on the weekends so rounds don’t take 5 hours.
Slow Sunday
I love the layout of this course, but tee boxes need work (many have no grass) and pace of play was terrible (4.5 hours for 13 holes… had to walk off, could not finish, would have been 5.5 hours for 18). Rangers did very little, even though holes were open in front of us. Starter was very friendly and the food in the clubhouse was excellent. Halfway house was also excellent and well stocked. Just wish people played faster. I’ll be back, but on a weekday.
worth coming back to
I had fun playing this course. I look forward to playing here again.
Summer golf
A hot buggy day, need bug spray esp. hole 8-11. The 1st tee box much better finally
Accessible course with pace of play issues
Van Cortlandt Park is probably the most accessible course around New York City which is great, but also its curse. Many beginners play their first rounds here and pace of play is slow as a result with the ranger (if he's present) simply giving up on the issue.
It's a Muni course, so expectations are naturally limited and it's a decent course for that, but $85 for a round including the cart are steep for what it is. Will likely still return for a practice round some time.
Noooo bueno
Avoid weekend play, I hear weekdays are faster rounds but very slow, bad golfers and no rangers effectively doing anything to help. Plus poor conditions.
