After half the groups had teed off and there was still 4 or 5 in front of us. And we were on time. Photo submitted by null on 09/25/2014
Need Refund
They closed the course after a 1-hour wait/delay due to weather. I need a refund
Pretty disappointing
I played Van Cortlandt after hearing some very nice things about the course, combined with its proximity to Manhattan. The location, in my opinion is the only plus. The course fails to deliver in almost every aspect of the golfing experience.
The pitfalls began with paid parking, something I cannot ever recall paying for at any other golf course. I don't care that it's just $3, I've played inner city golf courses before and none of the ones I've played had a pay parking lot. Checking in was a breeze, the pro in the clubhouse was quite nice.
Then it's a 10 minute walk from the clubhouse to the first tee. The funkiness of the layout is something that I really can't get past. The course is old, the holes are walkable, but there's 5-6 times where green to tee is far better done driving.
Course conditions were underwhelming, even for a muni. The tee boxes were hard as a rock and not well kept. Aprons were choppy on nearly every hole, but 17 was particularly a mess. Greens and fairways were both in good condition and were honest. Sand traps had many small rocks/pebbles. Greens rolled to about a 9 in my estimation.
Some of the holes were pretty interesting. 1 is a nice opening hole, 2 is a beast of a par 5, 6 is a very pretty hole with water, 13 is a weird par 3 with a blind tee shot from the tips. And 18 is a pretty fun closing hole - a reachable downhill par 4.
Also, no practice facility on site, and the practice putting green by 1 tee was punched and nothing like any of the other greens on the course.
The whole experience was a bit disappointing. Got paired up with a fun couple and had a nice time, but I'm not too thrilled to play this course again anytime soon.
Pace Of Play Not Good
Been playing here for 3 years and pace of play has always been slow. Yesterday was something I have never seen before. Quit after the 14th hole it was so bad. For a City course, still fine. But pace of play needs to improve. The marshals driving around don’t enforce and pace of play. Convinced they just drive around
Worth the history
First time playing the Vanny. Staff was super friendly. The half way house was perfectly situated. The pace of play was slow, 5 hours. But we weren't in a rush and didn't mind. Course was in good condition. Some tee boxes had rough type grass, and the rough was a bit burnt, but given the hot summer and little rain, the fairways and greens were in good shape. Worth the money for a summer Friday round of golf.
It is in bad shape right now…
I’ve played VC many times and it has always stand out from other public courses in the area, however this last time was a let down. There are no grass in any of the tee boxes and fairways are not well maintained. The guy at the pro shop is great, but you can’t say the same for most of the other guys at the staff (parking guy is awful and the starter is not very nice). Course layout is fun and challenging and the greens are in acceptable shape but they really need to put some effort to the overall condition of the course.
Course is falling apart.
Got 3 carts all 3 were really dirty… not cleaned after each use and all had ripped seats. Really need to make it a nicer experience.. It looks like a golf course from the 80s after you pay and you pick up your cart they need to clean that whole area up put a few more tables and things out and make an enjoyable experience
Really poor course conditions
The fairways are barely grass. The tee boxes are basically just dirt with a few blotches of grass her and there. The greens are really bad too. The halfway house was closed on the hottest day of the year. I only played because the Hot Deal made it less than $20 (I think I paid $13 after a coupon too). It is normally around $70 with a cart which is insane. The course and facility has a lot of history (oldest public course in America), but I will not be returning after what appears to be lackluster management and grounds crew.
Not worth your money - VCGC needs to change…
The nickle and dime you at every corner. First they charge you to park- only public course that does that - then with 20 dollars per player per cart that doesn’t even have gps , on top of green fees, you could be paying upwards of 75 bucks a round. 75 bucks a round for a course that hasn’t fixed its tee box on #1 in at least 5 years!! Hire more staff, repave cart paths, fix tee boxes, and space out tee times just to start. Refuse to play here again unless they drop their prices or fix these glaring holes.
Course could be much better
Played VC many times over the years and probably won't play again for some time. Course is in horrible shape and looks like it's getting worse. The carts are outdated with no GPS yet still being charged way more than we should for 18 plus a cart.
Not worth it
Pace of play unbearable. Over 6 hour pace. Had to skip a few holes. Tee boxes pure trash, you're hitting weeds before the ball everywhere. Some tee boxes were so hard you had to hit off the weeds/grass. There is no way I would ever play here again. Only redeeming quality was the staff was nice
Great day poor play
I see the first tee box finally being repaired so the ladies tee box is in play for all. The greens usual some run fast some slower. Fairways ok. I just did not have it today.
Good Bang for Your Buck
I've been playing Vanny since 1982, and I've always enjoyed playing here, even back in those early rounds when the course had fallen into disrepair. In the last 20 years with more money poured in to the course and with better management it's a fun track providing enough challenges for the average duffer. My biggest beef is with the condition of the tee boxes, although the course does get an overload of play and gets beat up. The fairways and greens are still in pretty good shape for the middle of the summer.
