After half the groups had teed off and there was still 4 or 5 in front of us. And we were on time. Photo submitted by null on 09/25/2014
Beautiful NYC Gem
Lovely golf course, look forward to playing again.
Pleasantly Surprised
I hadn't played Vanny in a couple of years and my last memories were of poor conditions and a dreadfully slow pace of play. What a surprise today. Teed off at 10:20 and was done at 2:30. Not too shabby. Greens are in immaculate condition . . . better than the Westchester County courses I usually play.. Bumkers are a total mess and need a lot of work, along with many sections of cart path. Tee boxes also need work. That said, if you aren't hung up on using a hand wedge to find a good spot of grass from which to hit or tossing your bunker ball back out onto the fairways, Vanny is worth a look just for the amazing greens.
Van Cortlandt
Except for a few lousy tee boxes, the course was in great shape. There were very minor puddles despite heavy rain earlier in the day ( which kept the number of golfers down!)
Best City course
Best NYC course Ive played at. Greens are immaculate. Never seen greens this good in the city. Pace of play was perfect too. Definitely playing here again. Such a beautiful sunny day too. Makes me feel like im playing back in the early 1900s. Definitely would suggest watching Skratch YouTube video about van cortland if youre going for your first time!
Much better conditions than expected
The first tee box aside, which is in such disrepair that you hit off of a mat, the course looked great. Greens rolled very smoothly albeit very slow, but I’ll take slow over beat up any day. Finished in 4 hours midday Friday tee time. Was super cheap and is very walkable. Would definitely play here again considering how close it is to Manhattan.
Gem
Best public course in NY. Staff does a great job maintaining this course.
Extremely happy with this gem
Van Cortlandt was a joy to play. The greens were in great shape along with fairways. They have an amazing job with upkeep. Can’t say enough how happy I was to play a smooth round here!!!
Home Course - But Still Nice for NYC!
This is my home course, so I'm a bit biased, but I still think they are doing a great job with it. I know that staff is short there, but the greens are in good shape for the most part and the course is well maintained. It gets a TON of play, so I think they leave the grass on the greens a bit longer, which usually makes them roll a bit slower. That being said, I'd rather have slow greens with grass than barren greens with dirt patches! Definitely worth the trip up on the 1 train to check it out, especially since it is the oldest public golf course in the country. Note that they haven't put the black tees out yet, but I'm told they will later this Summer.
