After half the groups had teed off and there was still 4 or 5 in front of us. And we were on time. Photo submitted by null on 09/25/2014
great muni
even on a Sunday still only 4 1/2 hours, course in good condition. A must play .
Historic course
Played in the winter during COVID so the course and amenities were limited but it was a nice round. The pace of play was fine. I can’t wait to play in the spring.
great muni
course in great shape. Open all winter if no snow on ground. A must try . Only bad thing is no amenities are open due to covid regulations at this time.
My best round ever!
I shot a 75 which was far and away my lifetime lowest round. My previous lowest round was 81 several years ago. It was a great feeling to break 80 in such convincing fashion. I thank my cousin Steve and the other two gentlemen who joined us for making this such a memorable experience for me.
I am looking to getting back to Van Cortland in the near future.
Vannie in the fall under Covid
I've been a regular at this course for over 50 years. The current management and their staff is better than ever!
Despite the pandemic that has us all in their grip, they have continued to provide a safe haven for all of their dedicated patrons, and new comers alike.
The course is historic as the oldest public golf course in the USA and is a must play for any enthusiast of the game.
Bravo to my friends at Vannie!!
Fun course, Slow Play
Went out to Van Cortlandt Park for the first time this weekend. It’s a charming and quirky course with a cool history.
First, it’s the middle of fall, so course conditions are what they are. It’s also been pretty wet the past few weeks.Overall, the course was in decent shape. There were some muddy spots on the fairways, and some tee boxes without grass. There’s a mat set up on the first tee, which isn’t ideal. Greens were in pretty good shape! Not patchy and rolled smooth - just slow due to moisture which is what you’d expect and totally fine.
I really enjoyed the layout of some of the holes. There are a few narrow fairways, but more times than not you can be comfortable taking a driver off the tee and letting it fly. The course isn’t too long for mid-handicappers, and has some well protected greens and undulating approach shots which keep things interesting. A healthy mix of hole layouts.
My only complaint is pace of play. They book tee times in 10 minute intervals and work to squeeze as many folks out on the course as possible. Not sure you can expect much else from a municipal course in the city. Expect your round to take ~4 1/2 hours.
All in all, I had a great time. Is it the best course in the area? Nope. Is it great value? Good, not great. Will I go back? Absolutely.
