NY City Golf Course - Van Cortlandt Park

This is a typical NY City park course. Overused and bad fairways.

It's cheap and easy to get to by subway.

So the average cost for me, a senior, is $35 during the week. Add in the cost of the subway two ways and it's a no brainer to play at Van Cortlandt for me.

The people who play here are generally friendly and most medium grade golfers.

This course is getting better

Overall, I felt their green was becoming better. They need to do a better job shaving and pressing it, but conditions overall was better than last time i was here. Tee boxes are slowly becoming better, but still needs work. Rained the night before but overall was well drained.

Good place for short game practice.

Bronx gem

I played vancortland golf course many years ago, so it was nice to go back. The course was in excellent condition and challenging as ever. The greens were phenomenal and the overall beauty of the course is remarkable. I would certainly recommend playing it.

Great City Course, Need to fix Pace of Play

After living in the city for almost two years I decided to try out Van Cortland and Mosholo. Van Cortland offered a more challenging course that is a pleasant convenience near the city. Overall course conditions were in good shape although it seemed the course had not been cut in some time due to weather in the past week.

A challenge that ruined the round enjoyment for me was mostly around pace of play. From the first tee box we were met with a 3 group pile up and the ranger seemed unphased by those on the tee taking multiple mulligans until they hit a playable ball. We did not see a single ranger monitoring pace of play after that hole other than to remind us not to drive on one of the wetter holes. My round with 3 other average golfers took over 6 hours. After making the turn I noticed hardly anyone teeing off at twilight rates, I would assume there was no chance they would even get 9 holes in, smart people. Course should really consider spacing out tee times a few minute and having rangers throughout the course with offering friendly reminders about pace of play, I would have never thought my 1pm tee time would be challenging sunlight on the first days of summer.

Overall, good course but won’t go back unless it’s first tee time of the day or course improves pace of play.

Very slow play on Friday afternoons.

This is the second Friday afternoon that I've played at Vanny. The 18 holes took 5+ hours each time. It's a great layout and well maintained course, but too many player don't know how to keep pace with the group in front of them. And, there are no rangers visible.

Great weather

Even though it was a great day, the pace was good. The greens were in good shape but the fairways needed work

Great course. Slow play.

The course is in great shape. They need more rangers to help speed up play. I only saw one ranger, and that wasn’t until the 14th hole.

Historical course but very slow and monotonous

Easy to get to by train from Manhattan and the walk to the course is scenic.

It’s an old school course so it’s pretty much the same setup all along. Very long holes but not much variety.

It is worth doing it once.

The only drawback is the extremely slow pace of play.

There’s a nice putting green at the start to practice while you wait for your turn. It takes a while and all carts are queuing for their turn and all day following each other. It took us 5:30 to finish 18 holes on a Saturday starting at noon.

Very enjoyable round

Played on a really nice day, first in nearly 6 weeks of poor weather. Course was crowded but moved along just fine. Tees are in poor shape as they have been all winter. Fairways were a little wet from he recently melted snow, but the greens were rolling very well..

May in early February

Course was in as good a shape as possible on a February 5 after single digit temps just days before. Pleasure to play, even though it was soggy due to time of year. Apparently it is the NYC course choice, because my brother in law played Pelham Bay and it was much less crowded.
