good course
Being that there is a golf course in the Bronx,NY,.i was impressed by the layout
Highly recommend it
Home Field Course
It's a fun course for any golfer--I'm an average golfer (15.3 handicap index) who loves the sport and the course offers fun challenges for me. No driving range, of course. Mosholu Golf Course, which is right across the highway (and a drive away), has a driving range and a compact 9-hole course which everyone plays the whole 18.
Many players play at Vanny, as it is aptly known among locals and the general consensus is that they find the course fun as well. The traffic within the course can be tough at certain times—such is the case with most local courses that don’t really strictly enforce a good pace of play, but early birds and twilight hours are best (one can finish a round in 3-hrs or less). If you decide to tee off anytime after 10am or noon, expect to play for a good 4-5-hrs.
Staff is very helpful and courteous... Food is great, but a bit on the steep price. Brews (served both on- and off-course) and alcoholic beverages (served off-course only) are available.
Overall, I love it and I played my first ever round here since I’m a native Bronx resident and fell in love with the sport here and consider Vanny my home course—a little history of it being the oldest public course in the US doesn’t hurt, either. Enjoy!
Only course around
Not too many courses open in February and at least no temporary greens.
Hopefully course will be fixed up by April.
pro shop guy was helpful
Don’t like rule that as a single you have to share a cart..expectation(and to speed up play) is that you would get own cart if a single..
But can’t expect much for February and happy to get a round in.
Unprepared and inadequate staff
First time playing this course. Made reservation for 11:24am tee time, the pro shop didn’t have keys to golf cart and told me to wait for the keys from golfs finishing their round. Waited 10minutes and people behind us got keys and they went out first. I went into the pros hop and complained and I wanted my money back and he apologized and found extra keys. But the layout of the course was average and the greens were small. But this was one of the few that opened in the middle of winter in the NYC area.
Golf in October!
Greens were aerated recently and were bumpy. Fairways were in great shape, balls were lost in rough under fallen leaves (to be expected). Tee boxes were rough, but it is November. Nearly broke 90, I haven't done that in quite a while.
I played about 10 rounds of golf here this summer,'. Course was a lot better than I thought it would be. The staff is great and very accommodating. Burgers and hot dogs at midway were tasty and well priced. Big selection of craft bottled beer.
All in all, it was very enjoyable playing at Van Cortlandt this year. Will definitely play here next year. Maybe I will finally break 90.
Rip off
Course is in very bad shape, too many bald patches all over the place so you are hitting off mud and greens were airrated and over grown but they still charge full price, going here be prepared for a 6hr round and no ranger in sight , the place is a joke
Great convenient track for NYC locals
Booked an early morning round on a Wednesday to avoid pace issues. Course is in great shape especially for this time of year. Always enjoy coming here due to the convenient location and friendly staff. Not a long track but I wouldn't consider it walker friendly. Riding is advisable playing here due to the layout and design. Lunch was tasty and enjoyed eating outside on the rear porch overlooking Van Cortland Lake.
Can't Believe it's the Bronx!
I discovered VCP 2 years ago when my wife asked me why I kept driving to CT, where I used to live, to play. When she told me to try VCP, I laughed, but tried it.I thought it would be a cow pasture. It was a Fall day and I couldn't believe I was playing on a beautiful course, IN THE BRONX, no less,, with the most unbelievable colors of the trees and a well groomed course. I never have trouble booking a time and the staff if great. A great bargain, especially the senior rate of $33. And I can even take an easy subway ride from the Upper West Side. It is a hidden gem!
Great Golf in NYC
I've lived in New York all my life and have been playing golf for over 25 years. Most of the time, I drive North to courses that are well maintained and I can play in 3 1/2-4 hours. I knew of Van Cortlandt Park, but until this year, never played the course. I assumed it was an overcrowded city course that was beaten up by the number of rounds played there each year. Boy was I wrong. I've now played the course 6 or 7 times and have been amazed at how well maintained it is and the efficiency of the staff in moving play along. The course, itself, is in excellent condition and appeals to players of all levels. There haven't been any long waits like you might find at other public course...in fact, most times, I got out right on time. Overall, this course is a lot of fun to play. Already looking forward to playing it throughout the Fall.
Shotgun start after outing or tournament
Started on hole 4 @ 2pm. Very fast round, 3 1/2 hours. Felt rushed by the two players assigned to me and my son to make a foursome. No burgers or hot dogs at midway, should have eaten lunch beforehand. Really like the cheeseburgers they serve.
Course is in good condition. Greens could have been rolled better, tough to get a true roll.
Starter always friendly, pro shop were professional as usual.
Disjointed layout, nothing special
The clubhouse and the history are cool, but the course itself is quite basic with a very disjointed layout. The course is split into three sections with a parkway running through, which makes it a very difficult walk. There are a few nice holes in the middle and a couple at the end of the round with some big elevation changes. But mostly the holes are basically straight back and forth, with flat greens and tree-lined fairways.
Fair course
I've played the course before and pace was much better. My group and I stopped playing and left the course after taking 3.5 hours to play 11 holes. Rangers were literally useless, it appeared they were just driving around.
Very Disappointed!!!!! Should be issued a credit or replay.
Fairways and greens in very good conditions but wish it was better marked for distances with devices such as 150 yards marks more visible.
Carts do not have gps screens.
Overall it is an enjoyable course.

I completely agree. It is a minimum of a 5 hour round. The golf shop always inserts other groups between tee times. I live in NYC and will never play this course because it's way too long. It's not a bad course layout, it just takes way too long.
