After half the groups had teed off and there was still 4 or 5 in front of us. And we were on time. Photo submitted by null on 09/25/2014
Great Winter Muni
when all other courses are closed around NY this course is always open if no snow. a great mostly flat open layout with some challenging shot spots.Highly recommend going because you will go back after.oldest muni in the US.
Pace of play was outstanding. Finished in 2:30. The course was pretty empty but having a round like that is always nice. The course was in very good shape for late December
Must Play Muni
As far as winter golf goes in NY, this course always open unless snow. Good overall layout, can be walked as flat but some long stretches between a few holes and one uphill climb.i highly recommend it and you will come back. Easy off from highway also.
Great Muni
Good course to play anytime, easy access in the Bronx. Open all winter if weather permitting. good value for money also, Open layout and well kept. Highly recommend.
inconsistent greens
I play at this course from time to time. I have to say there were some positives. First the pace of play got better. I think this in part is playing at earlier in the morning, and the staff are pretty friendly. The starter is a good guy, though he was bit frustrated with rangers. I think this course has potential, and it has history.
Some negatives were the green and tee box. I get we are at tail end of the season, but if greens were being aerated, it would have been nice to be notified or adjust the price accordingly. Definitely could use more work as greens are bit slower and not consistent.
But it is NYC muni course so I had my expectation set appropriately. Long par 3 and par 5 for those on back tee, but definitely playable. Take advantage of short par 4s.
Tetsundot
For those golfers living in Manhattan have not many options to play golf within reasonable traffic time. Probably Van Courtland is the most convenient golf course. This golf course is certainly just like a restaurant you go with jeans, not with a jacket. The first nine holes are a litter longer than miniature golf courses and I can reach at the greens with one shot. But scores are not the subject. The subject is you can find an oasis within 30 minutes from the Manhattan just like the Central Park.
Love the 16th hole
I don't get to play this course enough, but I always enjoy it when I come back to play. This weekend we had a good foursome. Some where here for the first time and they loved the course. The back nine is my favorite some holes gives an upstate feeling.
16 people at the first hole
Nothing like a 6 hour and 15 minute round on a Saturday. Should have known we were in for a rough day when there were 16 people (not including our four) at the first tee box with no starter to be found. It was the wild Wild West. Absolute chaos. When the starter finally arrived he allowed three groups with later tee times to go ahead of us and others with earlier tee times. When I asked why he was doing that, he got arrogant and asked for a logical solution to the problem that I had. Last I checked, checking tee times and receipts didn’t seem to be something that required logical brainstorming. There was one ranger for the whole course and average time waiting at each tee box was 19 minutes. By noon, the ranger had said that 240 people had already gone through the course. Just about double the normal reservations. Poor outing.
Bate and switch
Reserved tee time through Golfnow, which was advertised at $45 per person with cart and lunch included. When I got to the pro shop, I was charged $72 with no lunch included. The person at the register said they no longer honor Golfnow prices. Course condition is not worth $72, so this was a total waste of money.
Vanny
Decent course. Long from the tips. Not a walking course at all. Ok course for experienced golfers, good for intermediate and beginners.
Always enjoyable.
Play early on the weekends so you finish in under 4.5 hours. Greens are in great shape but they keep them slow so they survive the many rounds every week. You don’t need to be a long hitter. A good short game will keep your scores low.
Worth it.
This is a nice course. If you are an average golfer this course you’ll find this course enjoyable with a level of difficulty that keeps play interesting.
Everyone from staff to other golfers were very pleasant.
Be sure to check out the Locker room. They filmed a scene from the movie Wall Street there.
My advice is to give this course a try, you’ll like it.
Great Day
During the week good pace...decent greens and fairways. Many tee boxes improved.
Rough short enough not to lose a ball
Overall very good
been awhile
Been awhile since I played here. #1 tee box was fixed, but overall my biggest concerns were the conditions of tee box. Being a public course, I do temper my expectations, but biggest issues I saw was the un-evenness of tee box while trying to take shot.
Overall, always nice to see 600+ par five. I only know of Marine Park for NYC muni to have a hole of that distance.
Definitely need rangers to keep the pace moving. greens were slow. definitely need work there.
Overall, it could use bit more work.
Classic course
I love everything about this layout. It’s historic and a true honor to play. A true gem.
