Music is Great
I have a bone to pick with public courses costing 70, 80 dollars to ride. That said, Marine Park is a true "clubhouse", nice dining facilities, both inside with a real short order cook doing work, and outside with a grill. The best thing about MP is the practice facility: driving range (no woods), large chipping and putting greens. And then there is the music!. The starter, generally an ornery cuss, plays some of the best American Classical music one has a right to expect at a public golf course.
Unpleasant...
Staff was very rude. They wanted to kick us off after the first hole, claiming we were taking too long, however we were still waiting for the group in front of us. Man named Ted “head ranger” was following us through out the whole course, after every hole he would say keep it going, was very unsettled . Felt rushed and could not play well. Would not play there again! From reading the other reviews they seem to do this a lot.
First Time at Marine Park Golf Club - Not Impressed.
Marine Park Golf, is under repair. My review are a bit hard, but the season is starting. Course was wet, and a lot of birds excrements on the fairways. Did do not have log ball for souvenir, and the Grill Bar was closed. Carts and pulling Cart are old. Golf Cart path are damage on a 85% of the course. They need to do a better job to put it above average golf course. I will return the golf course is close. Hope is better.
Nice people except for one
I enjoyed every holes with nice partners.
Though there was construction going on 3rd and 4th holes, gentle men in the shop and the field friendly guided us and had no problem with that.
However, the starter was the worst person I have ever met in golf courses.
I read another review and found that I was not the only one who thought so.
I hope NYC could find better person. It would be easy. Anyone would be better.
Course was nice, but not ready for play. Greens were aerated but they charged full price. When I asked the guy in the pro shop about the full price for the greens fee, he just replied they were aerated 2 weeks ago. They had not grown back yet which is fine, but don’t charge full price and then say they were aerated 2 weeks ago...no excuse. The starter was a character too blasting music through a speaker and barking orders about where carts can and cannot go. Not friendly at all.
True, the greens did not heal as quickly as usual, as we've been fighting the weather all year. Our normal aeration discount is in effect for a week, but will look into adjusting if the conditions are not up to standards. Thank you for coming out and hopefully you will see improved conditions next time!
The course is conveniently located to lower Manhattan. Don’t go here expecting a fast round or great conditions. Greens were aerated during my round so it made putting impossible
I've played this course for about three years after moving to NYC. Every year the course does seem to improve, but my only grip (still) is are these high mogul (like) piles of dirt and grass that line the greens and fairways. There isn't enough grass on them and if you get into one its nearly impossible to hit from. I know you shouldn't be in there, but with very windy conditions everyone typically finds their into one or two each round. Like I said the the conditions were very windy and cold and it's been very cold even as we near Spring so I won't comment to much on the course conditions. Overall the course is in great shape and holding up well over the Winter.
Pace of play is what gets to people. Seems like the Starter doesn't allow too enough time in between groups and they eventually get bunched up by the 4th Par 3 hole, but that is a common problem with most public courses. We also noticed people and groups paying a little extra in order to tee off in front of already payed costumers (as in tee times are invented on the spot). This obviously slows down play as there are too many groups on the course. Also a lot of betting and money changing hands on the greens which adds to the round duration. I gripped more than usual about my round, but when its 45 degrees and gusting 20-30 patience gets thinned real quick.
I do enjoy the course layout and proximity to my apartment in Queens so I will be playing here from time to time.
Average Course with A Lot of Play
This course is just an average NYC muni course that gets a huge amount of play. It serves the purpose of providing recreation well, but it's certainly not something to travel far and wide to play.
Another slow day...
Anytime the weather is nice, be prepared for an extremely slow pace here. You are going to watch your life pass by while you wait. It gets backed up quickly and you will have 2-3 groups ahead of you in the tee box at some holes. I had a 2pm tee time and our group knew there was no way we'd be getting 18 in. By 6:30 we were on #13 and it got dark so we had to quit. That's 23 minutes per hole folks. Pretty painful. If you can stomach that, it's a nice clean course that's fun to play. Long and straight with sneaky tricky greens that are challenging and enjoyable.
Very very slow going!
The back 9 is fantastic...
But by time you get there your ready to pack it in.
70 min for the first 3 holes!
The course was in the best shape I've ever seen it. Greens were very fast but true & fairways were beautiful . Can't wait to play it again .
Poor Condition, Grumpy Staff
Course was covered in patches of dirt littered with rocks and broken glass. Pro shop and bar staff were very courteous, but the starter was kind of a jerk and treated out group with very little respect. Acted like it was a chore to answer simple questions about the course (ex. How the greens running out there?) and appeared to be bothered by the presence of golfers interrupting his newspaper in the starters hut. All in all I found the course to be repetitive, and in poor shape. I am doubtful that I will return and would not recommend. My one main positive is that the pace of play was fairly quick for an NYC public course. They seem to do a good job of holding players to their set pace.
Marine park
The course was in great condition even with aerated greens from only a few days earlier highly recommend as it's a pleasure to play there the course is always well kept pace is usually good staff is always friendly . I highly recommend
slow day
Group ahead of us was painfully slow and rangers spoke to them, but nothing was changed to alter their pace, nor were they instructed to let us play through. Almost 6 hours to play 18. Who has time for that? It was also 85 degrees and not a drop of water in any of the water coolers.
As far as the course it's long and fairly straight. If you end up in the rough you will lose balls. Very difficult to find in the high grass.
Also have to add there's a cranky old bearded guy working in the shop who should not have a customer facing job. His attitude and demeanor are horrible, even by golf course standards. If he yells at you before you even go out it can put you in a bad mood. This is not a friendly course.
Slow
Course conditions. Much improved from years ago. Greens great. But over 5 hour round ruins the experience..
Solid links style track with great conditions
Course conditions were some of the best I've seen here, most likely getting ready for the popular Brooklyn Open tournament. Winds for the day were calm compared to the usual breeze this place gets. Pace was expected slowed because it was a weekend round after an outing. Staff is friendly except for the starter would consistently gets into it with paying customers. Overall, one of the better if not best NYC courses.
Played 9/22/17, same great course conditions. Pace a little slow for a Friday taking 5 hours 5 minutes to finish. No issues with starter today. ☺
Never Again
Pace of play is horrible. 3-4 foursomes on every hole. No one in management knows what is going on on the course. Rangers useless.
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
Yes, the weather has been challenging. We got a late start to the winter projects and are still finishing up. The good news is the 3td and 4th holes will be completely transformed with new bunkers, roughs, and cart paths. Thank you for coming out!
