Cove Cay Golf Club
About
Cove Cay Golf Club is located along the shores of Tampa Bay, offering scenic views and abundant wildlife. Water is a prominent feature on the golf course, coming into play on 12 holes. The course is tight with narrow, tree-lined fairways and several tricky dogleg holes. In addition to all of the water hazards, there are also deep bunkers lining the greensides. At 6,000 yards, it is not a long course by any means but what it lacks in length it makes up for in shot-making challenges. Thanks to its length though, it can usually be played in under four hours. The layout features a diverse set of hazards that will require the use of every club in your bag. Cove Cay Golf Club's signature hole is the par-5 17th. This dramatic hole runs alongside the bay, making accuracy a necessity in order to reach the small peninsula green.

Cove Cay on Tampa Bay Photo submitted by webbknight on 09/21/2012
Good course for the money this time of year in Florida
Played early (7:25) and was paired with two members which was a great help. It would be difficult if you did not know where all the water was located (some of it hidden from the tee) We played in 31/2 hours as there was no one in front of us. Later in the morning would have been brutal with multiple groups on each hole.
Fairways a bit wet but greens were fast and nice.
Rain
Great play until it started raining. We could only play 9 holes.
Nice little course for my first round of the year coming down from MN. Teed off early so pace of play was good. Most greens were in good shape and got faster as the sun came up.
Nice Florida Course
The course is in good shape with the rain we’ve had. The back 9 was a little squishy but that will go away. Really nice views of the bay and Courtney causeway bridge, nice staff...overall I’d recommend and will play again.
Cove Cat golf course
Very nicely designed golf course. Has a couple of holes that are right on the Tampa Bay that are breathtaking. Unfortunately the first two holes are out and back and my partner that I played with got hit when the foursome ahead of us teed off. Slow golfers and wet conditions from the rain that we receive the weekend before made fairways very soggy. All and all three out of five stars.
Worst pace of play ever experienced
We should have asked for a refund right off the bat after finding out that the checkin represenrative was manning the counter, cash and doubling as the starter but we thought additional staff would be joining shortly. No such luck. After being warned that they were " a little backed up," we were told to tee off on the 10th to just get things going. This was when the real delay began.
We were playing behind one of the course regulars (Ziggy) who had his retiree friends on that day and were gambling on each hole.
They chose to be completely ignorant about the many groups they were holding up and were the most inconsiderate group of golfers we have ever had the displeasure of encountering. Instead of just letting our twosome and the single player behind us just play through, they pretended we didn't exist and pulled out a tape measure on each hole to measure the greens and continue on with their stupidity. Since there were no marshalls om the course, the ignorance persisted even though we called into the clubhouse to report the delay.
While the course was nicely groomed, I would never return and would discourage any visitors from wasting their time. Such a horrible experience.
Interesting layout
This course has a unique layout, especially for the area. Greens were running well. Fairways had very tight lies. This course is a nice break from the average Florida course.
Nice enough
Course was ok for $50.00. The facility itself deplorable. I mean the bathroom was a disgrace. The counter in which you order.a.drink or food from was sticky. I mean a real pig pen.
The girls working there were very nice. Cart Women very nice.
Coming along
It’s probably been two years since our group last played this course and even then you would have to push me to give it 1 star. In fact I told myself I would never play it again. But we gave it a another chance and I can honestly say Cove Cay is back on our rotation. While some greens still need some work the overall condition of the course is pretty good. For a par 70 course it certainly plays longer and has some holes that will test your skills. The front 9 has a bit of a Myrtle Beach feel to it with the back your typical Florida course. The back nine has a few beautiful views of the bay that you will not find on another course. Price was reasonable but only because of the hot deal. I would say the initial price is still a little high for a course of this kind but you can’t beat the $20 replay. Would play again and hope that it continues making strides.
Water front golf
This golf course has the best views in the area. With at least 3 holes running bayside this course has some very memorable moments. The signature 17th, a long dogleg par 5, is nestled right up to the water and requires 3 good shots to put you on the green. This course is narrow and utilizes a few shared fairways however accuracy is a premium so it is best just to take less club for a straighter shot. Since this course is relatively short it makes for quick rounds. The conditions were really great. Nice tee boxes, nice fairways, and extremely nice greens (not to fast but not too slow). I had a wonderful time and look forward to my next visit.
Incredible Course
Fantastic layout with the best views in the Bay Area. Staff and alligators were incredibly friendly as well. The experience exceeded my expectations and you can tell the new owners care. Staff working deligently to maintain the conditions yet in a way you can’t even notice them.
Cove Cay Golf
This course has gone through an amazing transformation over the last 5 years of new ownership. It is back to the hidden jewel it once was. The Shriners have done lots of good improvements. The greens are great, the ball rolls true. Graet value in Clearwater.
A pleasant surprise
Admittedly, the lowish slope rating kept me away from Cove Cay. I think I'm better than I am!
This is no pushover from the blues, the back has four par threes, which is fairly weird, but the original designers had to somehow squeeze nine holes along the water to show off the bay. The views on the back nine really make the course. Photos ops galore!
The conditions were fine to me. I don't ever get to see Florida (and the type of turf) in October but found all the local courses were very green and soft during my short visit. I also have ZERO trouble giving my ball a winter rules / GUR kick if I feel the Golf Gods would nod their tacit approval. I had to move my ball a couple of times on the green to avoid some damage but that was hardly the reason I didn't sink those fifteen footers.
The front nine wanders through condos and development and is fairly tight. The smart play is to get the ball in the fairway off the tee. One can still blast driver all day if you want to shrink the course up but I ended up under trees trying that strategy out.
I raved about this little course to my golfaholic wife. (who was up north) The various tee boxes along with all those par threes (well six of 'em) make this a nice course for a mixed group of players.
I'd give it a whirl if you're in the area. The back nine is really delightful and sets this place apart from the others in same price range / category.
You won't shoot 66.
great course
I really enjoy going back to this golf course every time haven't had one bad experience thank you great time!
Over the years my wife and I have played this course many times And during that time the course has been in fairly rough shape. Because of the condition of the course we haven’t played there in months, but since we like the layout of the course we decided to go back again today. We were pleasantly surprised to see that they are finally investing money into the course. There were new a T markers on every hole and we also noticed an increase number of staff maintaining the course. The biggest issue that we had with the course condition was mainly the greens today we find the greens were in better shape they’re patching some of the rough spots ion some of the greens . We were very pleased with the overall condition of the course. The only negative comment we have in relation to today was the attitude of the elderly gentleman working behind the counter. He wasn’t the friendliest person in the world he could certainly use a course in customer service. Other than that we had a great day and we shall definitely return.
A pleasant course
Cove Cay has some problems that the new owners are addressing but the layout has always been a pleasure to play with great water views.
Many of the greens have been hit with a fungus which means patchwork repairs which require you to move your location on the green when putting.
The sand traps are mostly course compacted sand and rocks.
The cart paths (not all) are pot holed. Some have been completely redone and are great.
Overall the course is coming along - try to book early tee times as the more senior golfers come out in force around 9.
