Berkshire Valley Golf Course
About
Berkshire Valley has a scenic location in the Highlands region of northern New Jersey. It is known as one of best public golf courses in the area. The course is perched atop the ridge of Green Pond Mountain, providing a dramatic topography for a challenging round of golf. The front of the golf course was carefully carved from a hillside, featuring narrow fairways that place a premium on accuracy. The first five holes are particularly scenic as well as formidable. There are some open holes that play along the cliffs, subjecting them to the prevailing winds, one of these is the intimidating par-5 third. The Berkshire Valley golf course finishes with its signature hole. This hole can be deceiving since it has a generous fairway, but the second shot is uphill to a tough green.

One of the best NJ munis
Berkshire is a very good public course. It is not really a muni, but not really a high end daily play facility. Sort of just right. For the locals paying lower greens fees, its a gem. At $80 plus on the weekends, it is a little steep for non-residents. The pace of play can be a little slow. The second hole, a 210 yard par 3 from the whites, can back up the course early. On the back there is a drivable par 4 that can often create a wait. The rangers are usually out, but generally take a laissez faire approach. The course is very tight on the first five holes that run high upon a ridge overlooking the rest of the course down in the valley. Beautiful views. As the course turns down in the valley, it is more open, but water does come into play on several holes. Just about every hole has some interest. #13 is a brute of a hole with a good drive over water usually leaving a long 2nd shot to a tricky elevated green. The par threes are solid, with forced carries over the two on the back nine. The course was in very good condition as it usually is. The greens have recovered from aeration. There are very few flat greens on the course and they can run fast. It is a fun course that will challenge you, but will reward you if you are playing well.
Great Track!
This Morris County course is a real gem. One of the nicer rounds I had this season. The starter DAVE is a great guy and had a wonderful sense of humor. The conditions were country club like. I'm from Passaic County and our muni's are a joke, unless your a fan of Goose droppings and getting talked down to. All municipals could learn a lesson from this place. Keep up the great work! Highly recommend!
A great day of golf
The staff was friendly and helpful at this Morris County, NJ course. It is nicely maintained by the Billy Casper group. Golf carts required. This is a negative to me so I won't be playing here often. The layout of the course is such that holes have their own individual traits. Much of the course is up against a mountain. Greens rolled true but many were multi-tiered and large. Never played here before so had no local knowledge which would have helped a great deal, especially on approach shots. Will play here again as I am a resident member. There are three other courses in the system where walking is allowed.
Pearl Harbor
This is a beautiful, scenic course and well maintained. However, the pace of play was so tedious we couldn't take it. We surrendered after 12 holes. I wont overtly state the cause of the slow play, but those who are somewhat astute will discern it from the review. Slow play is a plague that is killing golf. It sucks the fun right out of it. I will avoid any facility that permits slow play and as such, will avoid this course. Unfortunate, because it is a fabulous facility.
Rave review. Will return
Superb track. Loved the layout. Recently moved up to the area from Union County and BV makes those county courses look like goat tracks. Greens were still recovering from the aeration, but not the end of the world as I could roll putts on them. Haven't had many opportunities to play this year and today's round showed that, but I'll definitely return to play the course again before the end of the season.
Good Feature all 18 hole.
I was Thursday afternoon must be the perfect time to golf here. We teed off at 1:50pm, had another couple on first tee, Conditions were ideal & course was impeccable. I recommend highly.
Need to know if greens are aerated ahead of time.
I haven’t played this course in 6 years. When I arrived most of the staff was very nice (though one of them scolded us about taking the cart to our car even though there wasn’t a sign). The course was in decent condition. I wish that golf now would have told us the greens were aerated. If I knew that I would have golfed elsewhere.
10$ off for aeration = Not worth the price!
This was my first time at this course in 3 years. The course was in great shape except for the greens. When I went to check in, I was told the greens were aerated 2 days ago, and they were only taking a whopping $10 off green fees which I thought was a little ridiculous. I didn't feel like $10 was enough of a discount. I was pretty much putting on the beach.
Great view, tight course
The couse has a beautiful setting. Because of the distance between green and tee along with the elevations you will need to take a cart.
The greens were sanded so putting and reading the greens were challenging.
The first 4 holes are along a ridge and require accurate shot making off the tee. Some other holes will require lay up shots to take a proper shot to the green. The pace of play was wonderful, completed the round in about 4 hours.
Fantastic
It was my first play and impressed toomuch. It is very challanging and eager to play and I will try to play as many as I can
Course was greate as I heard from my friend.
We played on Blue which is over 6354 yards.
It was well designed courses which mixed with hills and valleys with waters. View was great and I will be back there in fall to see the differences, Green was fast enough and well designed to make 2 and 3 putts even little wet after sprinklers. Overall, this course is one of hidden Gem at the Northern NJ. Even possibly compare with Wild Turkey, but cheaper. I definitely recommend play to other golfers. it was pleasure to play and spend a time with good staffs.
Greens Gone Bad
usually when I play this course the greens are ok
now, FORGET IT!! hard, burnt, fast, dry and just awful greens. some fairways aren't in better condition. Shame on Billy Casper for ruining what was once a nice course to play!
Maybe next year?
Course Ranger needs to take a pill
We were the 1st group off at 6:10. No one in front of us, the group behind us was 1 and 1/2 hole behind. the Ranger at the turn told me to pick up the pace as we were almost 30 minutes behind. No good morning, no pleasantries. Someone must have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed Saturday morning. Course tee to green in very nice shape. Greens very beat up. lot of ball marks that had not been fixed. seems like every hole (newly placed) had a crown around it that caused putts to roll away from hole instead of dying into the hole. For the money I paid I would have expected a little more TLC on the greens
Good course
Really friendly staff.
Fair way rally nice, only some of the green player did not fix the divet.
I will go back soon.
This course has a very mixed feel.
The front nine has an incredible view of the valley below and the back nine. The front is placed on the side of a cliff and is very narrow, no room for error on either side. The back nine is very flat and has lots of water. It is definitely the easier nine, including a short par 4 and a par 5 that can be reached in two. Greens are very quick and difficult to read. Some greens are crowned and it can be difficult to hold the ball on the green. Overall, a great mix of challenge and pleasure. I would not suggest walking, very hilly and tiring.
Nice Course
This is a beautiful and well maintained course. It offers beautiful scenic view, frequent ups and downs of the mountain setting to go along with some variety of water hazards to keep you focused. Oh yeah, there are OBs to the left and right in most of the holes. To sum it up, this is not an easy course while not the most difficult course either. But, you better concentrate or else the course will test your patience limit if you're not careful. ^^
Great Course Great price
I have played at Berkshire Valley at least 5 times and every single time I go, I leave happier than the time before. The course is gorgeous and always in great condition. I highly recommend playing here whether you're a seasoned pro or even new to the game.
Beautiful.
Beautiful views. Challenging golf.
Great conditions
Brutal
Showed up and was told greens were just recently aerated and are a little sand. Every green was a mess. Why tell everyone as they show up instead of before a tee time is made like everyone else? A lot of the fairways are still recovering from the harsh winter. We asked the ranger what he could do about the slow group infront of us. All he did was shrug his shoulders and drive off.... They had a hole and a half open infront of them while everyone else behind had to wait on every shot. For 82 dollars you would think you could get a course in good shape with a friendly staff but apparently not. This among many other reasons why you should stay away from the morris county/ billy casper courses. All going down hill.
BERKshire valley
very nice scene when u enter the golf course.
staff was friendly.
whether you are single handicap or 20something handicap
I'm sure you'll enjoy the course.
