Berkshire Valley Golf Course
About
Berkshire Valley has a scenic location in the Highlands region of northern New Jersey. It is known as one of best public golf courses in the area. The course is perched atop the ridge of Green Pond Mountain, providing a dramatic topography for a challenging round of golf. The front of the golf course was carefully carved from a hillside, featuring narrow fairways that place a premium on accuracy. The first five holes are particularly scenic as well as formidable. There are some open holes that play along the cliffs, subjecting them to the prevailing winds, one of these is the intimidating par-5 third. The Berkshire Valley golf course finishes with its signature hole. This hole can be deceiving since it has a generous fairway, but the second shot is uphill to a tough green.

Beautiful
This course is beautiful.... Slightly challenging, keeps you on your toes but not too difficult.
People who slice alot will have to bring alot of balls.
Great course but
Course is in good condition and somewhat challenging. I played at 2:50 on a weekend and the pace of play was too slow, took 5 hours!
Always a fun course to play interesting
Alway a fun course to play interesting especially when you play well
must play
if your knocking this course I want to play where you do. the same man did ballyowen but had a better piece of land to work with here. pictures from this course would make great calendar.
only beef, blow up back tee on 2 and move us all up one.
aerated
The greens were aerated, but putable, the course was empty which made for a quick and enjoyable round.
5+hour round.
Our round was ruined because it was the longest round I've ever played and the most annoying part was that rangers were nowhere to be found. Got paired up with locals who said there was an incident where a slow group got beraded by one of the rangers and they filed a harassment suit. Ever since this incident the rangers are scared to say anything. Pace of play is apparently a serious problem here which is a shame because the course layout and design is awesome, and could rival ballyowen, architects, neshanic in terms of course design.
windy day-tough from the back tees
course very playable for this time of year....greens rolling fast....4 hour round without rushing....very enjoyable
Great day out with friends
The course was as expected; young in the season. I have played here once before and remember it being in great shape "In" season. There was a frost delay in the A.M., so the 1st tee was backed up. That's where the Grill comes in! HOT Dogs and COLD beer!
Has a good day and look forward to getting back so I can get beat up by those first five holes!!
Great golf holes!
Great course for straight shooter.
Course only opened a couple of days ago but considering the winter we had, was in great shape. One downside was the tremendous amount of geese droppings all around the course. Except to lose a lot of balls if you can't drive straight off the tees. Some fairways are narrow and out of bounds are steep. Actually a very beautiful and fun course to play but wouldn't recommend to beginners or below average golfers. Ability to overcome hazards such as water, traps, and gullies is what makes this one of the best public courses around this area.
Great experience first time,, had issue with reservation second time
Hi
I loved the entire experience the first time I went with a client on October 17. Conditions, personnel, course, views, etc.
I then on the 25th booked a threesome for the 28th. then the fun began. I had three people set for an 11:30 tee time, 12 hours later I tried to add a fourth and they sold that position. I never encountered this situation before at other courses. And neither has anyone else I know. So I cancelled the threesome and went somewhere else. I don't think it makes sense to book singles 3 days in advance in a foursome. But you run it your way. next time, I'll book a foursome and then cancel 24 hours in advance.
One more thing. I don't like the configuration where you have to drive a long distance from the 9th hole to the club house for refreshments and back to the 10th hole. It was clear that during summer you have a picnic area, but what about us cooler weather players. We like refreshments too.
Beautiful course on a beautiful day
1st time and enjoyed it extremely. Played from blue tees, and found course challenging, but manageable. 1st 6-holes were tough, as were last 17. Greens in very good condition, especially after 2.5" of rain over previous 48hrs.
Views of fall countryside were an added bonus.
Windy Day
The first five holes will test your abilities ,especially in the wind. The course was in very nice condition, the greens were quick, but they held. The people at the course were very friendly and helpful. All in all it was a great place to play golf.
Morris countys' gem
Berkshire Valley has gotten better and better over the past 2 years. The course has been groomed and manicured to be like a private facility. It is a wonderful experience for any golfer that has moderate experience. It is not for beginners.
I recommend this course to be on the must play at least once during the golf season but especially in the fall when it is most beautiful
One of the Best Munis
The natural beauty of Berkshire Valley does not eclipse the quality of the course, but it's close. As other reviewers have mentioned, it is not a course which can be easily walked unless you are really looking for workout. The layout presents a number of challenges, including forced carries over water and waste areas, sprawling bunkers and some pretty good elevation changes. The greens were in fine shape. Overall, a very well planned and maintained course. A couple of caveats: most of the fairways are accomodating but if you don't hit it reasonably straight, you're going to lose some balls. Also, the snack bar is a snack bar (with a grill), quite limited. This is something Morris County should work on at all of its courses; it seems to be a pretty simple way in which the county could upgrade the golf experience even more.
Nice Course
First time at the facility, staff was nice and helpful. Course was in pretty good condition, the greens were mostly recovered from aeration, however, they were not very receptive whatsoever, lots of shots would land and roll through greens no matter what club you hit into them. Pace of play was a bit of an issue, however, I blame that more on the group ahead of us than anything else. They backed up the course. Also the drop zone on the par 3, 16th I believe is a total joke. Otherwise it was a good course, I'd play it again but I'm not rushing back.
Beautiful golf course
The only thing that I don't like of this golf course is pace of play it took me 5hour playing 18hole that was ridiculous but the course condition was great and the green very fast
One of the best NJ munis
Berkshire is a very good public course. It is not really a muni, but not really a high end daily play facility. Sort of just right. For the locals paying lower greens fees, its a gem. At $80 plus on the weekends, it is a little steep for non-residents. The pace of play can be a little slow. The second hole, a 210 yard par 3 from the whites, can back up the course early. On the back there is a drivable par 4 that can often create a wait. The rangers are usually out, but generally take a laissez faire approach. The course is very tight on the first five holes that run high upon a ridge overlooking the rest of the course down in the valley. Beautiful views. As the course turns down in the valley, it is more open, but water does come into play on several holes. Just about every hole has some interest. #13 is a brute of a hole with a good drive over water usually leaving a long 2nd shot to a tricky elevated green. The par threes are solid, with forced carries over the two on the back nine. The course was in very good condition as it usually is. The greens have recovered from aeration. There are very few flat greens on the course and they can run fast. It is a fun course that will challenge you, but will reward you if you are playing well.
