Great Rock Golf Club
About
Opened in 2001, Great Rock Golf Club is one of the newer golf clubs in Long Island but it feels much older thanks to its scenic landscape of rolling green hills covered with mature forests. The mountainous landscape provides plenty of elevation changes that make it difficult to find a flat lie. At 6,254 yards, the course is short but it is still a challenging round with narrow, tree-lined fairways that demand accuracy. There is hardly any water on the golf course but with strategically placed bunkers, sidehill lies, and towering trees to contend with, golfers will hardly notice the absence of water hazards. Great Rock's signature hole is the challenging 10th. This par-4 beast is a double uphill climb with a seemingly flat green, but if you read it that way, you're in for some trouble.

Great Rock 5-24-17
I first played here a few years ago, loved the layout and design but felt the course could use some TLC. Last year, tried it again and felt that it had gone further downhill, w/ big bucks being put into restaurant, clubhouse, bathrooms, etc. and not nearly enough in course maintenance. This year, I had read some solid reviews for Great Rock recently and decidied to give it another shot.
Greens had been aerated in early May and will need another week or two to smooth out and speed up. But seems that, with the exception of the first green which has long been a problem, the greens are in decent shape and will likely get a little better. The layout and design is as I remember, very entertaining and challenging. Not a course to walk, but u will enjoy the elevation changes while driving ur cart. Fairways in fairly good shape, but quality of rough was inconsistent... in some cases, too unkempt and gnarly even just off the fairway, and then bare spots in other places. The value remains pretty high for what they charge, but a little more TLC and this place could be excellent. Hopefully that's their direction this season.
the first cut was 6 inches we lost a lot of balls in the long grass. When we got back they said there lawn mower was broken. The greens had a lot of sand on them. The course was great last year I don't know what happened
Cut the grass
Other than the fairways and greens, it doesn't appear the grass has been cut all year since it is over a foot long.
I know Great Rock has been having some financial problems but really? Every foursome spent a lot of time looking for their balls and lost many of them if their shot happened to rolled into the rough. I definitely would not recommend.
Great Rock Golf Club
I don't know why so many people bash this course. Personally I think it's not a bad golf course. It looks like they dumped some money into the course. The greens were airated which I wasn't aware of. Fairways were in alot better shape. You have to be good on your irons and have to have a good drive off the tee. If you do that. The course is fun to play. I personally love the par 5s here. There reachable to get a eagle opportunity if your a long hitter. Rob in the pro shop is a great guy. He makes you feel like your a member at the course and so does Ron. The restaurant was amazing as well. The bartender was very nice and knew the menu like her bible. Gary the restaurant manager was very pleasant person to talk you. Very socialble person and helpful. Wish next time that people let you pass them when a single is playing. But hey it is what it is. The practice area is great as well.
Pleasantly Surprised
After many negative late 2016 reviews on course conditions, I was tentative to book. I'm glad I did. Layout with tee and fairway markings made course management a snap for a 1st timer. Very pretty course- with just the right elevation and challenge for the intermediate player. Greens were sandy and needed a few more weeks post aeration. Finished the round in 4 hours with a 3 some. Will def come back.
Good Value
Paid $58 for a 8am tee time on the weekend, Elevated tee boxes, fairways were in good shape, greens are fast! Rough has yet to fully grow in. Can't wait to play this course further along in the season.
Awesome course. I love coming to play here, if they keep their prices down I will come every sunday!
Good course that offers a different experience
Great Rock is a fun course that is USUALLY in good shape and provides a different challenge than other courses on LI.
The holes aren't long, but you do need to be accurate or else balls will be in the trees. I've seen the greens roll extremely fast at times in the middle of the summer. This makes the course much more challenging as two putting can be challenging even if it's not a very long putt. The way the course is laid out creates opportunities for birdies and blow ups. Makes it fun for all.
Biggest problem is this course had no amenities. They did not have their liquor license so there was no cart girl providing drinks.... even water would be nice. You can only golf here.... that's it.
GreatRock
I was disappointed. The course was aerated and detracted from play. Golf Now did not indicate this.
Great Rock
This course is hit or miss at times. I played here a couple of times. The price was good so I decide to give it a try again. I live in Wading River so it was convent to play here for the price. The course is tuff. If your not a long hitter. It can be a long day for you.
Fun course to play
Good course for your money.
Good deal
Two of us played Great Rock on a warm fall day. The greens were fast , they had a promo price which was excellent.
Disappointed
Course was in terrible shape, tee boxes sparse, greens chewed up. Some fairways looked like brown farm fields. Such a great course layout but sub standard conditions, only getting worse. We followed foursome of terribly slow players, drove cart right up to green. Ranger finally came up and told them to speed up play.
Advanture is on every hole.
They have a nice golf course and also nice restaurant .
