About
Opened in 2001, Great Rock Golf Club is one of the newer golf clubs in Long Island but it feels much older thanks to its scenic landscape of rolling green hills covered with mature forests. The mountainous landscape provides plenty of elevation changes that make it difficult to find a flat lie. At 6,254 yards, the course is short but it is still a challenging round with narrow, tree-lined fairways that demand accuracy. There is hardly any water on the golf course but with strategically placed bunkers, sidehill lies, and towering trees to contend with, golfers will hardly notice the absence of water hazards. Great Rock's signature hole is the challenging 10th. This par-4 beast is a double uphill climb with a seemingly flat green, but if you read it that way, you're in for some trouble.

WORST I'VE SEEN IT...
Having played the course over a dozen times over the past 10 years, I can easily say this is the worst condition I've seen it in. There were bare lies all over the fairway and just off in the intermediate cut, the greens were banged up, especially around the usual hole locations, and there was crabgrass EVERYWHERE! I understand the summers are harsh on golf courses, and this has been an especially dry one, but this is rediculous! This is a tough course to begin with, but with decent shots ending up in bad places, and not being able to putt on uneven surfaces, it is way too challenging, but for all the wrong reasons!
I would not go back
I would not go back to this course - one and done. Poor pace of play - almost a five and a half hour round (early Saturday tee time ). Locker room was very nice and the two gentlemen greeting us in the parking lot were very friendly but those were the only two positive aspects for the day. The tee boxes were not level and the greens were not well maintained. Certain spots of the fairways were taken care of while other parts were a mess (no rhyme or reason). To top it all off, the ranger came and hassled our group on the 17th hole and told us to hurry up when we were approximately 150 yds out from the green and the group in front of us were still on the green. I think playing this course should be a last resort.
The course has a lot of character
I thought this course was really good, every hole seemed a little different. Many holes play from beautifully elevated tee boxes. The staff were helpful and friendly, the pace of play was excellent. I thought in areas the condition of the course just lacked a little attention. Other than that I would highly recommend.
greens quick and challenging
Dry in some spots coursing for high bounce and run. Fairways looked good & worked with you. Enjoyed our round.

Beautiful views
The presentation of this place is very nicely done. The grounds and the facility are beautiful, and the staff is super friendly. The views that they have around the course are amazing as well. The fairways and greens were a bit torn up but didn't affect play at all. Overall I recommend this course.

Fun interesting course
We enjoyed our round and finished just under 4.5 hours. It was quite hot day and busy morning so not too bad. Wish they had a little breakfast available and water available on the course but all was good. Solid public course. Pretty and challenging too. Good value

Nice layout...
The course has a nice layout and the staff are supper friendly. However, the maintenance has dropped. The tee boxes are beat up, greens are hard and fast even when damp, the fairways are ok, but anything slightly off the fairway is like hitting off of a rock.
Several years ago this course was in amazing shape. Now, not so much.
No food available at 6:30 am and service cart only had soda, beer and chips and 9:00am.

It's a shame!
It's a shame, because the course has a very good layout with challenging holes , however, it's obvious that the course is not being cared for properly. Also, even though Rangers were out, the pace of play was still very slow.

Challenging and unique for Long Island
Ok - So - this course was REALLY spectacular a number of years ago. They have let it go a little and the fairways are burned out in a few areas, the tee boxes aren't in terrific shape and the greens can be very hard (as in packed down hard). BUT - that being said this is a GREAT LAYOUT and very different, but not gimmicky in any way. That's why I give is a 4 star rating. Lots of different elevations, and dog legs. BEAUTIFUL VIEWS from all around. Even with the changes in the course, this is still a super golf course and one that requires you to think on each shot. The restaurant Pure North Fork is fantastic afterwards for dinner or lunch and they usually have some kind of special. I will definitely be back to play - just hope they up the conditions a little!

Pricey for conditions
The greens were pretty good and the fairways were "ok". But anything not on the fairway or green was very rough and in maintained. Decent layout and fun track.

Hidden Gem!
Great course and staff! The club house has just been renovated and can cater all types of events. They also have a lunch special for the golfers from 11untill 4 during the week for only 10 dollars with a beer 22 different types in all. Live music on Fridays as well. They also have a half way house on the course and a beverage cart. There is a driving range and a putting green as well!

Not worth it
Terrible practice range. Mats are thin and hard and the range itself looks like Steven Avery's backyard. Practice green is ok but if there's more than 4 people on it you feel on top of each other. There is a practice bunker but it's more of a hole with dirt. Pace of play was terrible. Our group waited at least 5 minutes of every tee. Greens, tees, and fairways were in good shape. Bunkers had many small rocks so be careful with your new wedges (btw played wind watch today and their bunkers were perfect so yes it can be done). Green side lies were very thin and spotty so getting a good lie to chip out of was pure luck. Likely won't be back.

Played GREAT ROCK With A Buddy Of Mine via TeeOff Deals @ $40 a Piece For An 11;20am Saturday Tee Time. I Called The Night Before & They Easily Change My Tee Time Per My Request Due To Rain Scheduled That Afternoon To An 8:40am Opening... Great Start To GREAT ROCK.
Upon Arrival Extremely Friendly Staff From Club DropOff To Pro Shop To The Starter, All Very Accommodating. After A Lengthy Overview Of The Course (First Time Playing) By The Starter I Tee Off & Couldn't Have Enjoyed Myself More. From The Elevated Layout Throughout The Course, To Maybe The Highest Point In Suffolk With Far Views Of Long Island To See & Challenging Course Management Holes. The Course Is In Great Shape & I Highly Recommended GREAT ROCK.
With 3 Golfers Ahead Of Us, Four Golfers Behind Us & Only My Friend & I Playing Our Round, We Completed GREAT ROCK In 4Hrs Flat. Which Is Funny Because This Elevated Course Hit Me Hard & I Shot An 85, But I'll Take It For It Was So Worth It.
Thank You GREAT ROCK!! Ill Be Back During The Height Of Summer To Enjoy This Course In Full Bloom!
Slow slow slow
I've played this course several times in the past. It appeared to be a great value online, however the pace of play was very slow. We waited right from the start and it only got worse. The round took 5 hours. It was hard to get into any type of rhythm and it was very frustrating to wait after every hole. There is no half way house but at least there was a cart girl. No place to get a sandwich or a hot dog. Normally I don't care about eating on the course but with all the waiting around I would have had plenty of time to eat. The bottom line is that the price was not worth the wait.
Very sorry to hear about your experience. The Halfway House opened for the season today, which doesn't help you last week.
We try our best to move groups along but unfortunately the day you played we had a few some very poor players ahead of you that simply took too long.
