About
Opened in 2001, Great Rock Golf Club is one of the newer golf clubs in Long Island but it feels much older thanks to its scenic landscape of rolling green hills covered with mature forests. The mountainous landscape provides plenty of elevation changes that make it difficult to find a flat lie. At 6,254 yards, the course is short but it is still a challenging round with narrow, tree-lined fairways that demand accuracy. There is hardly any water on the golf course but with strategically placed bunkers, sidehill lies, and towering trees to contend with, golfers will hardly notice the absence of water hazards. Great Rock's signature hole is the challenging 10th. This par-4 beast is a double uphill climb with a seemingly flat green, but if you read it that way, you're in for some trouble.

Great Course Slow play
I've played here many times love the course and layout very challenging. I know it ealrly in season but you have to have a starter to make things go a little quicker. In this order there was a single at the tee a foursome next then myself and a friend after that do the math and I'm sure you can figure out a quick fix to make things go alittle quicker

Great! Didn't play well 3putt 3 times. Teens were tuff, and fast.

Great Rock
Course is tricked out, leave your driver in the bag on the short par 4s. greens can be tough local knowledge
is needed with several of the greens, speedy with a lot of bends. Bartender was friendly, good sports bar, apps were tasty.

Not being maintained as it should
This course used to be well maintained and a challenging, fun course. Since it recently closed and reopened the conditions have deteriorated greatly. I was eager to see what the new ownership was going to do with it, particularly at the start of the new season. This is what I observed: 1) several bunkers removed....obviously to speed play, 2) long grass that lined several holes and added both beauty and a challenge was cut down...I assume to speed play, 3) does not appear the fairways have been treated as the grass shows very little growth, still has a winter color and has brown areas all throughout it, 4) rough lining the fairways and around the greens has not received any treatment other than to be mowed. And it was not cleaned/raked as there are chopped up sticks, leaves, etc. throughout the rough. The rough also has dormant, matted down winter grass and hard dirt among the clumps of grass that are growing, leaving terrible lies just off the fairways or greens where the ball settles down between the clumps of growing grass. It was impossible to control your shot out of those lies. 5) The greens still have the winter yellowish color and are extremely hard (almost impossible to leave a ball mark), though they were at least fertilized as you can see the fertilizer pellets all over them. 6) It does not look like any irrigation has been applied to the course yet. And while it is still early in the season, my spring lawn at home looks far better than any part of this course. No exaggeration. There are so many decent courses to play on Long Island, it is a shame they are letting this course deteriorate.
Very sorry you didn't enjoy your experience. Most of our members and loyal golfers feel the opposite but nonetheless, thanks for taking the time to review.

Great Rock can be a challenge
Not the average flat fairways here. Fairways and greens are in good shape for an early spring round of golf on Long Island.
Good Value Pick
Have played course severAl times. Conditions are good generally. Greens are fast and tricky. Course has multiple doglegs. Course goes up and done hills and there are sloping fairways beginning with Number 2. A yardage book assists with routing

Great Rock Course in GREAT Shape
Played Great Rock (Wading River, NY) on 3/09/16 and although it is very early in the season, the course is in outstanding shape and the greens are "very quick". Will continue playing here for as long as I can swing a club!

beautiful day
who thought I would be playing golf the end of February on long island. considering it is still winter the course was in great shape. Greens were a little funky but who cares.

Up and down
Very unique a lot of hills, diferent! Is a challenging course for every golfer, accuracy its what you require in this course!

Worth the trip
Course is in very good shape for mid December. The greens are mottled and somewhat sparse, but still better than they had been for years under the previous management. The pace was excellent, not surprising for a Wednesday afternoon. Totally renovated clubhouse restaurant has a brighter, trendy look, and an updated menu with surprisingly reasonable prices.

Great Course - very reliable
Has changed owners not too log ago, but they have maintained excellent quality overall and the course is in fantastic condition.

Not on the PGA
We love this course but every time we play Great Rock, we get frustrated about putting. The greens are so fast it is ridiculous. If you read the other reviews, almost all of them say the greens are too fast. Great Rock's management should take these reviews seriously and accommodate the average golfer.

Love the layout, trees, rocks, and risk reward holes. Greens are tricky due to the topography.

Loved this course!
Definitely a challenge! Beautiful course felt like I was in Ireland, many hills, nice fairways! Greens difficult to read, very fast!
Be gentle chipping up.
Bar and restaurant beautifully redone. Had drinks afterward during happy hour, the 6 of us have tasty wines & beers.
Friendly staff! Will stay for dinner next time. Can't beat the price! $30 cart & 18 holes!

Smooth, fast greens
Played midday in 4.5 hrs. If you like fast greens, you have to play great rock!

Good Value
Enjoyed course...got around in 3 hours and 15 minutes. Disappointed in number of unfixed ball marks in greens but this is reflection of the golfers playing not the course.

Nice design
Every hole different. Quite tight and greens were lightening fast. Very enjoyable if some what slow round.

Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
