Great Rock Golf Club
About
Opened in 2001, Great Rock Golf Club is one of the newer golf clubs in Long Island but it feels much older thanks to its scenic landscape of rolling green hills covered with mature forests. The mountainous landscape provides plenty of elevation changes that make it difficult to find a flat lie. At 6,254 yards, the course is short but it is still a challenging round with narrow, tree-lined fairways that demand accuracy. There is hardly any water on the golf course but with strategically placed bunkers, sidehill lies, and towering trees to contend with, golfers will hardly notice the absence of water hazards. Great Rock's signature hole is the challenging 10th. This par-4 beast is a double uphill climb with a seemingly flat green, but if you read it that way, you're in for some trouble.

Scenic course but extremely difficult
First time playing the course in 5 years. I remembered it being challenging but not this challenging. The greens are way too hard and fast and the fairways are very hard as well. It is a course where you cannot miss a shot to the left or right, depending on the hole, without being punished. Every shot has to be placed in a specific spot or you will not be rewarded at at all. The course is short and way too tight and mostly requires irons off the tee, which to me is not fun at all. I personally did not enjoy playing this course and would not recommend this course to someone that wants to go out and have fun, hit driver and actually expects to have a chance to score well.
Greens in good condition
Greens in good condition. This course is not long, but is a challenging target golf course.
Great Rock = Great Course
This was my first time playing this course and I could not believe how beautiful it was. I went out at 9 am by myself and was done in under 3 hours. It would've been quicker but I was awestruck by the views and scenery. Greens and fairways were meticulous. Staff was superb. And the price was right. Complimentary coffee in the pro shop was much appreciated. I strongly recommend this course.
Challenging layout
Not an easy course. The 10th hole is as tough a par 4 as you will find anywhere. A lot of holes require placement tee shots or you won't make par. A challenge fof even the single digit handicappers. Just glad it reopened
Gr rock
Fairways had some crabgrass -bunkers had nice sand-greens a little slow
Fun course to play
One of the more demanding courses on Long Island. Though it has many shorter Par 4's,the set-up demands accuracy.
As I am an older(72) player, the use of a cart being included in the fee was a big benefit. All in all the round was very enjoyable.
Great Rock ---really enjoyed it's scenic holes.
Every hole had something to challenge the average golfer. Pin placements were well protected and greens were quick if putting downhill. Not too long , but with many doglegs and elevation changes. Definitely a good time was had by all. My one gripe on a hot ,humid day was no water cooler was supplied anywhere on the course. BYOW and have fun!!
Coming Back ...
This is not the "Great Rock" of old ... You still get the wonderful views and it's a very scenic course with nice elevations, but the shutdown earlier this year took its toll on the fairways and surrounds. This course is challenging, especially for a novice (or a decent player on a bad day!!) -- the greens are tricky, and fast (but not as fast as they used to be!). The rough is not as thick as it used to be, making it easier if you strayed off the fairway.
The fairways are not as lush as they had been ... probably a result of the lapse in the season. They seemed to have less cart restrictions -- maybe because the season is coming to a close -- I recall many more restricted areas in the past. They will have lots of work to bring this course back to it's previous condition ... but I'm glad they're operating and hope they're successful. The restaurant is closed ... it was a great place to enjoy a "19th hole" cocktail on their picturesque patio after a round. Staff said they're working on getting it reopened.
Great Shape
I have been playing here since course opened and this is the best I have seen this course maintained. Bunkers still need work. Some heavily sanded, some not. Still a great value at $45.00
Great Rock is a great course
7:45am Friday Morning tee time played in under 4 hours. No complaints there. Course is in great shape with a variety of different holes and elevation changes. Challenging for all types of golfers. Only negative I found were the greens were rock hard and unpredictably fast.
The Greens were in great shape, very fast with true read
My friends and I enjoyed our round. Beautiful day
The round was complete in 3:45 Minutes. The course personnel were very cordial. Only drawback was that there was no place to get something to eat or drink
ok course
would not have been happy if cost was any higher, course needs work. bad tee boxes. fairways to bushy. green to slow and bunkers were not good at all. not bad layout but really needs some work
Course condition
Greens were in great shape. Bunkers were overall just OK. Fairways were horrible with many signs of fungus emerging. The tee boxes were in poor condition. This course was closed for awhile and reopened this year but in the past when we have played it the conditions were the same. The new owners have a lot to do to improve the conditions they tout but does not exist. They should recalculate their slope ratings also. This is not an easy course for 15 handicappers.
Great course!
Greens were difficult (too fast as compared to other courses). The placement of the pin on the par 3 11th hole made it an extremely difficult putt. Only negative was that bunkers were in horrible condition, as golfers were not raking them.
Bring your own
Overall condition and pace of play excellent but no license yet so cart girl was very friendly but no beer. Do not understand on hot day no water to be. Found other than cart
Great Rock
Course was in great shape however the greens where extremely fast, many putts rolled off the green and putting was the most challenging part of the course on this day. I would recommend the course to others.
Nice layout
Nice layout but short at only 6200 yards from the tips. Greens can be tricky and quick from above the hole.
Great hidden gem
I went out of the way to try this course and I was not disappointed. Not long but knowledge and placement is key to shooting a good round. Greens are rolling true and fast.
Great Golf for the Money
Really great value. Except for the sand traps, course is in excellent condition. Greens are difficult, tee's are elevated. Restaurant was under renovation.
