Great Rock Golf Club
About
Opened in 2001, Great Rock Golf Club is one of the newer golf clubs in Long Island but it feels much older thanks to its scenic landscape of rolling green hills covered with mature forests. The mountainous landscape provides plenty of elevation changes that make it difficult to find a flat lie. At 6,254 yards, the course is short but it is still a challenging round with narrow, tree-lined fairways that demand accuracy. There is hardly any water on the golf course but with strategically placed bunkers, sidehill lies, and towering trees to contend with, golfers will hardly notice the absence of water hazards. Great Rock's signature hole is the challenging 10th. This par-4 beast is a double uphill climb with a seemingly flat green, but if you read it that way, you're in for some trouble.

Better be straight...
It's a pretty decent layout overall with good use of elevation to add length not tallied in the yardage. This course could stand to undergo some landscaping as many holes have little to no rough but trees instead. In fact, trees come into play on literally every shot. Branches hanging over the fairway and out of bounds 12 feet off the green can be frustrating to you or somebody in your group. The notoriously hated par 3 12th hole has been massaged into a (still) short but fun hole with its now relatively flat two tiered green as opposed to its former huge slope sending any downhill putt off the front no matter how softly struck. The greens still run too fast for a public course (fastest greens I've putted all season) at probably a 15 or higher on the stimp. Bring plenty of water because there's no bar, no cart service, no water coolers on the course, and one broken down vending machine that probably hasn't worked since 2012 located by the only bathroom accessible on the course. The bathroom ALSO looks like it hasn't worked since 2012 with toilets that were clogged and overflowing with waste. Avoid at all costs. The grounds crew were filling divots most of the day but seldom bothered to look up and regularly parking their cart in the middle of the fairway requiring us to wait or get their attention to move before teeing off on about a third of the holes. Pro shop and starter were very friendly, ranger drove by about every six holes. Finished in just under four hours.
spur of the moment round
Course was in average shape GREENS WERE VERY POOR If your a long driver and not a straight driver bring extra balls good course to make you think about shot placement staff very friendly pace of play average good for a spur of the moment round
Mixed Review
Beautiful course that need to be better maintained. The course is picturesque, yet crab grass covering some bunkers and 6-12 inch onion weeds on the fairways left a lot to be desired when it comes to maintenance.
I would probably not play here again simply because the sheer number of small groups made for an unpleasant experience. We played a 3.25 hour round and still had a twosome tight behind us the entire time. Most premier courses won't accept twosomes before mid morning. My foursome will probably play at those courses in the future.
The course is in beautiful condition
Played for the first time with my 3 sons. Staff was great, course was in great condition. The pace of play was perfect.
Rolling Hills and Faiways Dominate the Course
This recently reopened course on the north shore of Suffolk County is a definite challenge of shot making ability. Don't expect many flat lies, even when your drive finds the center of the fairway. The course wanders through wooded landscapes, and errant shots will disappear into trees, never to be retrieved.
While the course is not exceptionally long in overall length, there are some brutish holes that demand extra yards off the tee. These include the second, eight, and fifteenth holes, all of which are very strong par fours.
This a very fine golf course, which will both challenge and intrigue any golfer who plays it.
a challenge
course in excellent shape -- clubhouse and restaurant being renovated basically non-functional
A great challenge
Great place to test your fairway woods and the dog legs are a challenge
many hills unique in LI.
I'm glad it is back to Golf Now. Unlike other LI courses it has many high hills. None of its 18 holes has easy straight course. Each one has its unique difficulty that makes it very challenging every time.
However, its green needs better maintenance.
Excellent greens - but a bit fast
Course well maintained and fair to the players.
Senior tees make it possible for older players to have a shot at being on in regulation.
Great golf...no amenities
The course was in very good shape. It was nice to play it again. Perhaps when the finish rebuilding I might give it another try.
What irked me the most was the fact that there wasn't any water to drink on the entire course, the drink and food facilities were closed, there wasn't any carts being driven around to offer or purchase cold drinks or food.
The ranger at one point got us bottled water for two dollars a bottle.
Challenging layout
Given that Great Rock recently reopened, the course was in good shape. The greens were a little rough, but the fairways were in good condition. My foursome enjoyed playing there and we will play there again.
The staff was friendly and courteous.
With careful maintenance, this will be a first class facility again.
Worth the while
Really nice course, in great shape. The greens are quick and were consistent across all 18. Starter was really friendly, as was the bag drop guy, but the clubhouse worker wasn't as nice. Changing elevations, and tree lined fairways make it a beautiful track. In many ways similar to the Bethpage courses, without the congestion. Overall, an enjoyable round and a fair test. I will play again.
The course was in excellent condition.
Course was in great shape and offers many challenges throughout.
Overall the course was very nice, however the greens would too slow.
The course was in great shape but the greens were too slow.
This Course is coming....
Great Rock was closed for awhile and now open and we enjoyed it. You can see that they are trying to improve it and the Restaurant is closed for renovations. No Liquor License and therefore No Beer!
Great Day at Great Rock
My son was visiting for the Xmas holiday and wanted to play. It was a little rainy but mild.We were the only two on the course it was unbelievable. Great Rock is a challenging course for the irons a little narrow in spots but overall a beautiful course for any golfer.
Nice December Day
Had a beautiful December day with no wind. Got a great deal on GolfNow for $21.00! Staff was super friendly and got our twosome right out to the tee. Tee boxes a little beat up but expected for this time of year. Overall a nice round. Lunch in the pub was excellent too.
Great greens and pro shop.
Great Rock was a perfect course for all skill leveled golfers. Great greens, pristine fairways and well bunkered. I will play here a lot more next season.
Great value.
Wonderful to get to play here in the off-season! Course still in great shape. Open year-round, weather permitting.
Nice views, every hole a different challenge. Beautiful, fun day!
Great time as always
Course was in fine condition for this time of year (nov.). Always a good time on a real good golf course.
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
Thanks for the comment. The day you played our cart was out of service due to mechanical issues. Surely you understand that things happen. We try to accommodate all requests and thus the ranger getting you your bottled water. Thanks again for the comments. We look forward to your return.
