Great Rock Golf Club
About
Opened in 2001, Great Rock Golf Club is one of the newer golf clubs in Long Island but it feels much older thanks to its scenic landscape of rolling green hills covered with mature forests. The mountainous landscape provides plenty of elevation changes that make it difficult to find a flat lie. At 6,254 yards, the course is short but it is still a challenging round with narrow, tree-lined fairways that demand accuracy. There is hardly any water on the golf course but with strategically placed bunkers, sidehill lies, and towering trees to contend with, golfers will hardly notice the absence of water hazards. Great Rock's signature hole is the challenging 10th. This par-4 beast is a double uphill climb with a seemingly flat green, but if you read it that way, you're in for some trouble.

This course has plenty of variety and is extremely challenging to players of all skill level.
Great golf course, very challenging but fair at the same time.
The course required shot making. Driver not necessary on most holes
The course was in great shape and fun to play. The starter was friendly and set the tone for a great round. Will play this course again soon.
The course was in great shape this summer.... but not now.
Aerating on the tee boxes.... not good. The greens are super fast, and most of the greens are missing grass in most spots. Lots of bumps. The sand traps were groomed and fairways in decent shape... Too many leaves on the course. With rolling hills you have a direction of your ball, but I lost 2 balls in the fairway or just in the first cut. And because of the leaves couldn't find the ball. I will not be going back here until next year no matter what the price.
Major work done on Greens
Played 10/15/2013 at booking time of 8:12. I with others in my group was surprised by the conditions of the greens, much improvement over my last visit here, They cut and roll the greens very short for some of the best putting surfaces around for a PUBLIC course. GREAT work by the grounds crew.......now time to work on the bunkers. Stayed for lunch in the outstanding club house. Excellent food and service.
Good Course
It's a good course with some hard holes, greens were aerated recently but still roll good.
Greens are the best feature
This is a nice course with friendly staff. The greens are the best feature. We were told they were aerated early Sept. They're rolling fine now. Greens look benign, but be careful - there is severe sloping on some.
Definitely worth the drive....
Very nice course - - with lots of hills and raised tee boxes. Challenging side hill lies - - definitely one of the nicer courses to play on Long Island. Great staff all around. Grab a burger at the clubhouse after your round.
Great Course
Played on September 18, 2013. From the second I arrived staff was more than accommodating-course itself was aerated several weeks ago so the greens were more challenging than usual-they are very fast and takes some time to adjust. This is one of the nicest tracks on Long Island-Play it if you can, absolutely worth it!!
tough greens
Played back 9 because front was being aerated. Great shape as always tough greens
Great course!! I will definitely be back.
The greens were fast, fairways are not too narrow. The course is very fair but challenging at the same time.
Good hot deal value
Course was in good condition, the fairways are bumpy; hard to get an even lie. Keep the driver in the bag if you're a long hitter, par fours can be an easy 3wood and wedge. Ton of blind tee shots, definately an advantage to play with someone who knows the course. Greens were fast and true but could have used a little more maintenance; there were some dead spots. Nice driving range, they let you hit off the grass.
DO NOT PLAY!!
Course is in bad shape. Poison ivy everywhere!!!!! The greens are so bad they have to cut them almost down to nothing which makes them ridiculously fast which is not fun at all. Lots of rocks in the bunkers. WATER THE DARN GREENS!!! Its like putting on a wooden floor.
Great layout, in bad shape
What a great layout! It could be one of the best semi-private layouts on the island. But alas its in really poor condition, greens were riddled with fungus, quack grass everywhere. But the staff was friendly and accommodating. It breaks your golfing heart to see such a great layout in such bad shape. I'll be back if they can turn it around. When they do turn it around I'll be first on line and carrying a sign that says Great Rock is Awesome!
Mr. Curtin,
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my comment. I will be back, and tell everyone I know that you took the time to respond to my comments. Kudos sir.
Thanks for posting. Just so you are aware, our greens have zero fungus. Not sure what you were referring to but we do some areas on a few greens that were sun damaged this season due to the above average temperatures in July and early August.
I appreciate that you love our layout and assure you that we go to great lengths to ensure the health of our putting surfaces. Soil samples go out every month to help us stay on top of any potential problems and I can assure you that what you saw was not fungus nor disease.
Overall, we are very happy with the condition of our course considering the battle we encountered with all the elements this season. 20 days of rain in June and 13 days of 90 degree/90% humidity in July isn't easy to fight.
Thanks again for your comment, we hope to see you here again soon.

Challenging course with elevation changes and varied layouts.
I really like Great Rock. I am a high handicapper but can par a few holes per round. The course is in good shape even for the end of the year and is a pleasure to be on. Greens are in great shape.
Not as described
This course is average. The greens are in bad shape. There are many bunkers and dog legs. The pace of play was very slow.
Beautiful, challenging, a good day's outing.
Great Rock golf course has a great layout. It is interesting and challenging, but attainable. The greens could use some work, they are not in the best shape they've been in before, however. Also, bring cash or your own water, because there's none on the course! Also would be good to have the hole/course layout either at the teeboxes or on the score cards. Very nice staff; they try to make it a little more classy experience. There is also a good practice area and range.
Nice course//But needs more attention on maintance
Played Monday 8/27/2013 for a golf now price of $33. Paired up with 2 others that lagged behind in speed of play. Yes 5 hours with a open course holding many groups up in back of us. Lack of maintance shows up all around the course from tees, bunkers and greens.. I would only play there again if the $33 greens fee is offered, nothing higher..
Nice course but others on Long Island much better then Great Rock at this time.
horrendous
If you enjoy rounds that take OVER 5 hours, marshalls that do not marshall, and greens that putt like you are putting on ice, then you should play here. Everyone in my group agreed that this course is on the do not play ever again list. We played a 4 hour in the morning at Island's End, which was great. The choice to play Great Rock as our second 18, was a mistake which I will not repeat. Never again!
fast geens
The course is in good shape. Fast greens. Played in 4 hours. Good Golfnow price. Watch out for the poison ivy.
Worth playing
Course was in good shape. Nice variety of and looks. Due to slope and speed of fairways and greens, you really had to think your way around the course. You do not want to be above the hole.
Course was in bad shape. Poison ivy everywhere!!!!! Greens were soooooo bad they have to cut them almost down to nothing which makes them ridiculously fast which is not fun at all. It has great potential but the lack of maintenance makes it a DO NOT PLAY!!! Also lots of rocks in the bunkers.

Thank you for posting the comment above. I would like to just clarify a couple things you mentioned.
It is true, we have poison ivy in the woods and mostly beyond the white stakes. Surely with 160 acres of property to maintain, you would understand that it is an impossible task to rid our grounds of it. That said, we have taken every step possible to eliminate it from playable areas.
It is also true are greens are fast, very fast. We don't "cut them down to nothing" to achieve this but I appreciate the compliment. The course is barely 6200 yds from the tips and so we must have challenging greens to appeal to the skilled players. I believe once you play the track a few more times you will see how much fun they can be with a little local knowledge.
I appreciate your feedback and thank you for playing Great Rock, we hope to see you here again soon.
