About
Opened in 2001, Great Rock Golf Club is one of the newer golf clubs in Long Island but it feels much older thanks to its scenic landscape of rolling green hills covered with mature forests. The mountainous landscape provides plenty of elevation changes that make it difficult to find a flat lie. At 6,254 yards, the course is short but it is still a challenging round with narrow, tree-lined fairways that demand accuracy. There is hardly any water on the golf course but with strategically placed bunkers, sidehill lies, and towering trees to contend with, golfers will hardly notice the absence of water hazards. Great Rock's signature hole is the challenging 10th. This par-4 beast is a double uphill climb with a seemingly flat green, but if you read it that way, you're in for some trouble.

Great elevation changes, tricky greens, awesome amenities
Traveling so booked solo on line and got paired up with a couple of local boys half my age, doubling the challenge. I call it a hidden gem compared to the public courses I have been playing in the area. Quick warm-up prepared me for the opening water hole, hitting down on hole two awakened other skills and so it went on.
After 18 , the private club feel continued with the full service restaurant and bar. Pro shop, old guy on the range, starter, grounds guys, restaurant and bar, all staff gets a thumbs up.
I will play here every chance I get !!!
Tricky
The course was in better shape than the last time i played it. But the greens are way to tricky for me.

Nice layout.
Course has so much character...but...is not being taken care of...what a shame

Poor Condition
I know it is the end of the year but they did very little to maintain this course (By little I mean nothing). They should not be charging those rates and be embarrassed the course is in that condition.

Beautiful course..needs attention!
Unfortunately this course is going down...we have played it for years, and it is in bad condition..that said..we still enjoy playing...the value and fast play make this a pleasurable round..

The pits
Traps covered in crab grass. Greens Horrendous. Fairways or greens have not been watered god only knows when. Everything is closed except the bathrooms.To bad it used to be a good place to play

Course conditions.
The greens were very fast, The rough was too high overall. The fairways were in OK shape. There is a need for more directions to tees on some holes, especially if your not used to the course.

What a mess
I can’t believe what a mess this place is. I golfed here two years again s was so surprised to see the conditions. The fairways overgrown with crab grass. The traps have grass growing in them. Many of the traps are surrounded by overgrown grass. The greens are also beaten up.
I was also amazed to see one groundskeeper, one, with a weed wacker in the woods between 3 and 10 cutting down the grass. He was there when I played three as well as when I came to the tenth Tee.

My front yard is mowed better than this place
To be honest it was absolutely terrible. This course has so much potential but they let it go. A firmed me myself were extremely disappointed with this course.

Disappointment
This used to be one of the nicer layouts and courses on Long Island. The conditions were terrible. I was very disappointed. The fairways and tee boxes were more weeds than grass. The greens were fast, but layered with a fungus. As we were warming up, we asked how the course was; When an employee tells you before you tee off that its "in bad shape", that should have been our warning. I am not sure how long they will be open if it stays like this.

Not what it used to be
The course has definitely gone downhill since I have been there 2 to 3 years ago. The entire course has been neglected

Miserable
Terrible conditions, brutal lies, chopped up fairways and greens, just an overall miserable experience.
Pace of play was great but I guess that’s because nobody wants to play here.

Let Go
Worst condition ever. Looks like the maintenance staff went on strike. Bunkers had more grass than sand. Most greens were beat up. Tee boxs had more crabgrass than my lawn and were not even mowed.

Perfect Day
My second time playing this course. First the staff is terrific. Always laid back..The cart kid greets you at the end and helps to clean the clubs,,,Very nice touch. Enjoyed the holes The 10th hole # 1 rated is one heck of a challenge,,,The rolled greens are quite fast but fair. Will play this course again..No onsite eating facilities...

Terrible Condition!
I love this course, BUT it is in HORRIBLE condition. Don't know what is happening with the management, but what I do know is that the place is simply a mess. Bunkers are filled with crab grass, tee boxes are overrun with tall grass. If you care at all about the condition of the golf course you play, then this is NOT the place to go. In addition, they are still charging full rates to play it. It's a shame, cause this course used to be so fabulous and it's just been let go. I really hope that someone steps up and buys it and brings it back to it's former beauty. It would be a shame to lose another quality public golf course on Long Island!!

Neglect
I have played this course a few times in pass years. Was always a really nice course, great routing , challenging and good condition.
Has fallen into disrepair. Greens, fairways and rough covered in crabgrass. Rough not cut lost too many balls due to course condition not bad shots. Such a shame was a gem and unique for a L.I. Course. Like being in the mountains. Hope somebody steps up and saves it.

New owners hopefully coming soon!
It's a shame that such a great course has been neglected this way.. it's reminiscent of city public courses in the 80's. Tee boxes are overrun with crabgrass; greens with many fungus patches and fairways that are just not kept up to par. This place used to be a hidden gem with a phenomenal steak house to boot! Now there is no restaurant or 19th hole to retreat to after a round; nor any adult beverages on the course because there's no liquor licence..
All that said, it is not for the serious golfer. But, if you're just starting out or looking for a cheap round, the bones of the course are still there. You can get online and get a round for under $40. That's ridiculously underpriced by todays standard.
Word is that new ownership is coming in. If they put in the right people, this course will return to the great course it once was!
