Stonegate Golf Club
About
Situated just a few minutes from Muskegon, Stonegate Golf Club in Stone Lake sprawls across gently rolling hills that are surrounded by the beauty of the Manistee National Forest. The undulating terrain provides dramatic elevation changes that can give you a different round every time you play. Although there are residences bordering the golf course, it still feels completely secluded thanks to the sheltering trees and pristine natural setting that is accented with marshes and ponds. The golf course has a variety of greens, most are slightly raised and some are open in front while others have slopes and bunkers protecting them. The putting surfaces roll true with only a few mild undulations. Stonegate's fairways can be tricky since they’re lined with mature pines and hardwoods and more often than not you’ll find one or more bunkers guarding the most opportune landing areas.

Bring 2 cans of Bug Spray.
I make a point to play Stonegate at least once a year when I visit the region. I don't think I have ever really had a bad time.
This year was a bit different. I played in the morning, as I always do. There were so many millions of bugs on the course I could barely breathe without getting a lung full of insects. I have never seen it this bad. It was bad enough to make me consider leaving after 9 holes (but I stuck it out.) I don't think I'll ever play here again in the spring.
Other than the bugs, Stonegate is a nice course. It's always in good condition, and provides a good amount of challenges.
Two issues I do have, however, are these:
It's a community golf course. Residents of the community tend to treat it as their back yard.
-This last round I was held up more than once by someone using the greens as their personal practice area (this happened on 3 different holes.)
-On another hole, I was held up by a woman using the course as a dog park.
-On the back nine I was held up again by a gentleman using the hole behind his house to teach his very young grandson the game.
I know not much can be done about this, but it gets annoying. I can imagine if it were busy, it would really cut into the pace of play.
Secondly, if you play in the morning, you will always be stalked by grounds crew on their big noisy machines. They follow you to almost every tee, and watch you play. It's a little unnerving.
Awesome
Great course!! I can't wait to play again. See you next season.
Great Course. Love the difference in the holes. A good challenge.
Love all the par 3's. Love the elevation difference on many of the holes. Love the wide open fairways.
all round nice course
Nice course. Lost a few balls on the front 9 in the ravines. Hook or slice and you could have a problem finding your ball on many holes. Some greens seemed to be hard and didnt stick the ball as it should have. Well maintained course, Ill be back.
GREAT TRACK FOR THE PRICE!
A friend and I played Stonegate Golf Club this week and it was a great experience. Even though the course hosted major local event on the previous Friday the course was in perfect shape when we played.
The only negative was the scorecard and the hole markers do not match. I asked why after we played, and was told they had the course recalibrated last year and that the scorecard was correct. I wish I would have known that before play; it would have made distance calibration much easier.
beautiful course
Great layout. Very scenic.
Worth the drive from Grand Rapids.
Exceptional value- great course
Great course. Will play again soon. Played several times last year and enjoyed each round.
Great Course - Fun and Challenging
This is really a great course. The four of us are in the high 70s but really enjoyed the many different challenges and looks presented. A couple of the guys could benefit from some up tees. The course has an up-north resort feeling.
Great course!
It's a course with an up its feeling and only minutes from Muskegon
Play It Again
I would definitely play this course again. The greens were in awesome shape!
Quick Side Trip
Course is scenic through forested land. Greens and Tees are well cared for.
Great Course
Players who play long and players who play short can conquer this challenging course. I'm more of a mid range golfer and even the longest part 5 is reachable for me in regulation. The condition of the course is spectacular. If you haven't played this course yet, you very well should.
great food.
Played Stonegate before. Course was in great shape. Most greens had some type of grass fungus. Had to move ball o get better putting conditions on three holes. Will play again this year.
Go play this course
sometimes challenging course definitely worth the $
Great condition. Beautiful landscape. Well designed
Great value. Outstanding layout. Highly recommend this course. Will play sgain next week
A very challenging course
Playing from the blue tees I found many holes to require my best drives. As well a few of the holes demanded an excellent second shot to make par. I would deem this course NOT to be for the beginner.
great layout..
love the layout of this championship golf course. Played here more times that I can count. Course conditions have seen better days. Greens were noticeably slower than usual for this facility. Younger staff member was helpful and pleasant.
happy mother's day at stonegate
stonegate is a hidden gem, well worth the 40 min.ride for us.a pleasing layout that is somewhat challenging but very playable. My stepson and i took my wife for a mother's day round, and the best we got out of mother nature was drizzle for 16 holes, followed by a torrential downpour on 17 and 18.The course was in nice shape for early may, although we all had some trouble on the greens-i will blame that on weather, not conditioning.i recommend stonegate, and our hot deal tee time was a wonderful bargain for this nice of a course
Thanks for the 4-star review pmm21. I just heard today 5/17/17 that bugs weren't bad today so perhaps you caught us last year after a rainy spell. We'll keep educating our neighbors about their behavior. Early morning rounds will be when you see our grounds crew out doing their thing so perhaps a late afternoon round would eliminate that issue. Thank you again for the vaulable feedback and we hope to see you back at Stonegate soon.
