Always a joy to play
Mountain Lake is one of the finest and best maintained courses in Florida. Still true to Seth Raynor's design it has a great mix of demanding holes, although only two par fives. From the back tees it is a real challenge especially if the wind is blowing. This trip the weather was perfect, course conditions were fabulous and as always Jonathan and his team take great care of the members and guests.
Still splendid
Even after unexpectedly blowing a tire on the drive out to Mountain Lake, the course managed to embrace me and the rest of our Golf Advisor Getaways group for a great day. The peaceful, Old-World surroundings, meticulously managed old Seth Raynor golf course and welcoming staff make Mountain Lake one of Florida's most special places in golf. If you get the opportunity to play there, do not pass it up.
Trip Back in Time
Mountain Lake was an incredible experience, start to finish. We had a group of 8 that played the course as part of the Golf Advisor Getaway package to Streamsong. Mountain Lake was truly a pleasant surprise, and our group thoroughly enjoyed the round. The club is a throwback in many regards (including a dedicated Shoe Room), and the golf offered a much different experience than other Florida courses. As the name suggests, there is actually more elevation at Mountain Lake than you would think which allows for some very memorable holes. I personally loved the chance to play "template" holes in this type of setting. Would definitely recommend!
Mountain Lake was a special treat. It is an old classic that was in perfect shape. Bunker sand was soft and consistent. The course is beautiful with tree-lined fairways, some water, and mild elevation changes.
One of the best in Florida
I had the pleasure of playing Mountain Lake as part of a Golf Advisor Getaway to Central Florida. This private facility was a bonus included for guests on arrival day.
The 1916 Par 70 Seth Raynor design is such a treat to play. You get a chance to play all the “template holes” like the Cape, Biarritz, Punch Bowl and more and it’s great fun. The layout is generous off the tee and plays pretty long from the back tees when the wind is blowing. The green complexes are challenging and really require thought off the tee to get the right angles of attack.
Mountain Lake is a residential facility with a variety of real estate ranging from cabins to large estates. While you can see them from the course there’s virtually nothing in play.
This was such a fun day, one of my favorite rounds in 9 years of living in Florida. I really look forward to having the chance to visit again.
Traditional Southern Beauty
I played this course for the first time on a Golf Advisory Getaway. The minute you drive through the security gate, you realize you are somewhere special. You drive to the clubhouse among very nice homes on large landscaped lots. A unique feature of this private club, is the shoe changing room. The course is a Seth Raynor design from 1916, recently restored to its former glory. The course is not long, and the fairways are generous, which made for a fun first course to play on or Getaway. The greens were running very fast with lots of undulation. You would need to play here many times to know where to leave your approach shots on the greens, to have the best opportunity to make a putt. I could play this course every dayand never be bored.
Old Florida golf heaven
Mountain Lake is one of those places where as soon as you get through the front gate, your blood pressure drops. The Old-World charm, combined with the classic Seth Raynor golf course, is about as good as it gets for Florida non-ocean golf. The old oak trees and stately houses, set well back from the holes, add a great sense of place, and the Punchbowl green on the short par-4 15th is all-world. If you get the opportunity to play here, do anything you can to accept.
