BlackHorse Golf Club - South Course
About
The South Course at BlackHorse is known for the sand quarry that was ingeniously worked into the layout by the design team. Particularly on the back side, the wetlands and sand features come into play prominently and create a totally unique setting for golf.
Getting there : Take Hwy. 290 west to the Spring Cypress exit. Go south (left) under Hwy. 290 to Old Hempstead Hwy. Turn right and drive .5 mile. Turn left on House & Hahl Rd. Then left on Mound Rd. and right on Fry Rd. The entrance is on the right.

Blackhorse south
Blackhorse South took a huge hit from Hurricane Harvey but they are getting it back together. Most bunkers are being reworked and the grass has not had time to recover from the flood and winter conditions. The greens were in very good shape. By June it should be excellent.
Have always loved this course, but a little disappointed this round
I’ve always been a HUGE fan of both Blackhorse courses. I’ll first describe the course condition, then will add a few other things I wasn’t pleased about.
The course itself was in decent shape. All bunkers were still “ground under repair,” due to the damage caused by Hurricane Harvey. Fairways & greens were in great shape, but was cartpaths only due to the recent snow storm we had a few days before.
Three other things I wasn’t very pleased about were:
1) They were having a junior tournament on the North course. There was not a single parking spot available due to all of the parents that were there, and the fact that they had about 15% of the lot roped off for where they were housing the new sand for the bunkers. I literally had to park by the sidewalk.
2) Pace of play. Due to the tourney, they had everyone else on the south course. It took us 4 hours & 45 minutes to play. Plus there were numerous fivesomes in front of us. We feed off at 1PM, and barely got our round in.
3) Cart girl. We literally did not see one until the 13th hole. This is not typical of this course. I don’t know if the tourney caused this, or they were short handed that day. But you would think you’d see one more than twice (13th & 17th holes)in a round that almost took 5 hours to play.
Playing for only $48 on a Saturday was a treat! But the three things listed above were quite disappointing.
Blackhorse South
Fun and challenging layout. Bunkers need to be repaired due to hurricane Harvey but greens were in good shape.
Great Time
The staff is friendly and helpful. There was even a car detailing station for reasonable pricing.
As for the course, I loved it. Challenging, but not a ball breaker, ahum, loser. In other words, lots of holes are tree lined, but am errored tee shot still gets you a play. And hole 16 and 17 are something special!
See you there.
Wet conditions still
I’ve played BlackHorse twice before on past trips to Houston. Always a great conditioned layout Not so much now. The course is just still too wet from hurricane and recent past rain. The bunkers are totally unplayable due to sand completely washed out Tee boxes are really wet. Fairways have some standing water spots where you can see where water was in past. Greens are still in great shape. This course needs a few months of hot windy Houston weather. It’ll be back and so will I after it dries out.
Great layout and conduit for time of year
Played Blackhorse South Course with some clients. Course layout was excellent and challenging, but very fair. The condition was great for the time of year. We had an excellent time and will definitely be back. $56 Hot Deal was a fantastic value. Thank you!
?
The least they should tell you when you check in is that the bunkers are not playable . Normally a great track
North and south
I have played the north last week and the south this week,, the only detail that needs work is the bunkers the storm did a number on them other than that tea to green especially the green s are awesome highly recommend this course to any player
One issue
The club had a tournament that day so the other corse had a lot of traffic. Due to this we were rushed way too many times. We ourselves had to wait for players in front of us but we never complained. We were complained about on the pace of play when we waited for others and we also let a group go ahead. Honestly we were playing a good round and when we were constantly rushed on the back nine it made for a pretty bad end to a good round. Ruined the round for me.
Well maintained facility with valuable amenities
This golf course is always well maintained, staff is super friendly, facilities are clean and well appointed and there are always 'extra' amenities (i.e. car wash/detailing, intermediate snack shops, etc.). I fully enjoy playing this golf (both courses) every time I come here.
Tough Course
First time playing here and the conditions were good dispite Hurricane Harvey. Very challenging course with lots of hazards. I noticed that the scorecard only had the pin locations on each hole. No layout discription of what to expect. My guess is a way to make you buy a yardage book. I do recommend this course to those looking for a challenge.
It was a scorcher
The heat index of 108 and the difficulty of this layout got to me and I ended up shooting my worst score of the year, a 109 on the tough south course. That being said, Jim at the pro shop was a cool guy ( he was inside) and was friendly and helpful. The starter was giving out free ice cold bottled water and had ice available at the turn. It wasn't so hot that Marty Fkeckman who had been out there giving a client a golf lesson, took the time and asked if I enjoyed the course. Yes I did. Despite the heat, I had fun.
Texas Charm
First time to play this course and it's my first year. Very challenging for us rookies, but its a beautiful course. The staff was very helpful for guidance and answered all my questions. Top-notch practice facilitates also.
Black Horse is Awesome
You could argue that the price is too high. But, then the pace of play would be horrendous. But, other than that you will absolutely enjoy Black Horse. On the south course the biggest staying in the fairway is a good idea. There isn't a bunch of OB but the trees are just as unforgiving. It's a pretty long track too so I'd look at the yardages before feeding the ego. :)
