BlackHorse Golf Club - South Course
About
The South Course at BlackHorse is known for the sand quarry that was ingeniously worked into the layout by the design team. Particularly on the back side, the wetlands and sand features come into play prominently and create a totally unique setting for golf.
Getting there : Take Hwy. 290 west to the Spring Cypress exit. Go south (left) under Hwy. 290 to Old Hempstead Hwy. Turn right and drive .5 mile. Turn left on House & Hahl Rd. Then left on Mound Rd. and right on Fry Rd. The entrance is on the right.

The green were not in good shape
i was expecting better shape of the gregen considering the cost of the green fee
Blackhorse South
Blackhorse South is a great track, well maintained and reasonably priced
GREAT LAYOUT
FAIRWAYS GREENS GREAT LAYOUT NICE COURSE RECOMMEND FOR ANYONE
Excellent
The course is in great shape as always! It presents a challenging layout with holes where you can make up some shots. The behind the counter staff could be more pleasant, however the Jakes Grill staff is great! I recommend this course to all level players.
Black Horse South
I always like Black Horse but I have to say that the greens on the south course were getting kind of rough. Quite a few weeds and even some bare spots. Black horse is always a pretty price place and if their greens continue going down like they are now they will either have to lower their green fees or pick up a the quality or it will be empty. I don't know what the north is like.
Great course as usual, however...
I'm a big fan of both blackhorse courses. I've played here about 15-20 times. One of my favorite things about the course is that, although the course is a little on the pricier side, you usually get range balls for free and they have a great practice facility to warm up. That's usually how I reason with myself that Blackhorse is a better deal than other courses. However, I was informed at the range that since I booked a 4some via golfnow that we had to pay for range balls. They sell a small bucket of about 25-30 balls for $8 a bucket. That seems ridiculous to me, but I guess Blackhorse is either hurting for some more money, isn't valuing GolfNow as a partnering booking agent, or just know that they can get away with it. Overall like I said before, the course is wonderful.. Pace of play can be a little slow on weekends but that's expected.
Enjoyable
I will only play the South course which has some great holes especially the last few. Air conditioner in the clubhouse was broken but other than that, great day.
Great experience
The course was in good condition but the greens were GREAT! What made the trip was the staff. Everyone in the clubhouse was helpful, equipment and clothing selection rivaled most retailers, and the starter was amazing. I had trouble finding the 1st hole on the South course so the cart girl had me follow her in my cart all the way to the tee box. You just don't get this kind of service from everyone on staff in many places.
great Course
Great course, sand traps were in great shape, especially for that time of the year. Unfortunately, I stayed in them too much. Would highly recommend. One of the best kept courses in Houston area. Very fair course.
Best course I've played around Houston.
I'm about a 12 handicap.
Greens were flawless and probably the fastest putting surface I've ever played. I've played about 10-15 courses around Katy/Houston area and this is one of the best.
The thing that sticks out the most is the speed of the greens and the guy working the pro shop was as nice/helpful as you could ask for.
Def a bit pricey though.
Will be back to play the north course.
Black Horse South
Great shape for mid-November
South course needs work
South course was in so so condition. Still recovering from being flooded I assume. Greens were in good shape but fairways were skinny along with tee boxes. The "hot deal" made it reasonable. Rumor has it they are going to privatize one of the two courses and make the other public. My guess is the south course will be the public course with the shape it is in. Paying full rate for the south course with the shape it's in is not worth it.
Fast greens
The grass was a little thin in spots, but that is typical for the fall. The greens were really fast and took a few holes to make adjustments. Pass of play was really good for a Saturday afternoon. If the grass wasn't so thin, I would have rated the course higher.
Blackhorse South still recovering
Overall the course is in good shape. The green were excellent but some of the fairways were a little thin compared to other times.
It was a great experience with excellent weather.
Beautiful scenery difficult course
First time playing the South course at Blackhorse. It was great! Trees, water, huge deep sand traps, and sloping greens It was very challenging and exhausting, but well worth it. Greens were in great condition fast and smooth. Sand traps were also in great condition, soft white sand, no weeds, neatly trimmed around the edges. I had read the rough grass was too long, but I found it to be about right. I had to look for my ball a few times in it, no problem. Front nine pace of play was good, no waiting. Back nine backed up and we waited every hole from 15 -18. We just waited under a shady tree and enjoyed the scenery.
Nice venue
Went on a Monday. Had a small tournament which played slow but there was no one behind us so we jumped back and started over. If one followed thesee guys they would be frustrated but as it was, although I did see number 9 three times. It gave me some idea as to how to play the hole. The greens were fast and true. Fairways looked as though they flooded and are coming back. I play a lot of different courses in Houston. No memorable holes in thus track. Need a signature hole for sure.
BlackHorse South will test your game
Played on a Sunday afternoon at a great rate. Fee included cart and range balls.
Overall the course was in good shape with a few areas having some new sod to repair old flood damage. Greens were pretty close to excellent and quick. Rough was fairly thick but not so bad that you could not advance the ball.
I will alwasys come back to these courses when I can get a great deal from Golfnow.
