BlackHorse Golf Club - South Course
About
The South Course at BlackHorse is known for the sand quarry that was ingeniously worked into the layout by the design team. Particularly on the back side, the wetlands and sand features come into play prominently and create a totally unique setting for golf.
Getting there : Take Hwy. 290 west to the Spring Cypress exit. Go south (left) under Hwy. 290 to Old Hempstead Hwy. Turn right and drive .5 mile. Turn left on House & Hahl Rd. Then left on Mound Rd. and right on Fry Rd. The entrance is on the right.

Better bring A game
We played from the blues on the South Course and that was supposed to be about 6400 yards, but there were three 430+ yard par 4s. If you're not long and straight, could be a very long day and not very much fun. Very green, but not really very scenic.
BlackHorse - South
I had a wonderful experience here, and will be back the next time I'm in the Houston area. The front nine wasn't anything special, but the back nine was completely gorgeous. Play time was right about 4hrs. I'm still pretty new to the game so it was challenging for me and I did lose quite a few balls in the woods. I was surprised that the carts didn't have GPS considering the regular price to play here.
Tee Boxes - Great Shape
Fairways- A few holes were covered in sand, but that was because of a flood not long ago.
Greens- were nice but the speed felt inconsistent on a few holes.
Blackhorse South
Really like this course but it suffered flooding and still needs work to get it back to past excellence. Got a great hot deal for 4. The south course was wide open and asked the front desk if we could get off early. Without hesitation was told NO when we get the deal and time it's firm! Immediately I thought it was rude when most inviting golf course would have checked with the tee sheet or starter. We loaded our clubs and decided to just putt around but one of our group went to the starter which is a drive over the bridge. While my partner and I went to the putting range. while there the other group called and said the starter said we could go. Here's my beef if the pro shop would have check we could have started which was a good thing since there was a tournament that followed our original tee time. We got to start 20 minutes early and had no one in front of us and had a great time. We did noticed as we made the turn several groups of the tournament catching us so in this case it was a good thing we got off a little earlier.
I don't usually write reviews but I do know golf has decrease play and to keep it viable, all golfers need to do their best that everyone
Always enjoy playing here.
I like the fact there are 2 courses so we can alternate them as desired. Always in good shape and challenging. If you are not driving the ball well, your short game better be good that day. It is definitely one of the best courses in the northwest side of town.
True championship course
I played this course two days ago and really enjoyed the experience, especially because I got a great value deal on Golf Now. The design is an excellent target golf layout with undulating fairways and greens. The water damage from the excessive rain in Houston has completely wiped out the bunkers, likely for the rest of season. However, when they are repaired it will be truly magnificent again. Feels and plays like a PGA course although the price is too rich for my budget at regular rates. I played the south course, the most forward tees, (there are 6!) and was glad of it. The back 9 is particularly picturesque. I may splurge one time for the north course next season.
One of the Houston area's best public courses
One of Houston's most upscale daily fee courses, the green fees are also among the most expensive. Still, this is one of the area's best layouts, and despite some flood damage to the bunkers earlier this year, still a great test. Back nine is super interesting around an old quarry, and the par-5 finishing hole is a good risk-reward par 5.
Blackhorse South
Played the South course for the first time, straight forward layout, for the most part you can see all the trouble from the tee box. We played in the afternoon just as a tournament was wrapping up. 3:45 for a threesome.
Tee Boxes - Below average
Fairways - Best part of the course, in very good conditions, ball rolled out even though they had quite a bit of rain. Rough was high and ball sank to the bottom, keep it in the fairway
Greens - Looked very good but were slow to very slow on the front, slow on the back. Very Grainy
Bunkers - One word awful. After the first hole we decided not to play out of them
Great Conditions After Aeration
I played this course a week after they aerated the greens. While there was still sand and holes on the greens, they rolled better than expected. While there were some erratic bounces, that was to be expected. The greens were EXTREMELY receptive, even with the sand still on the greens. After letting the greens grow a little after the aeration, the crew did mow and roll the greens. This allowed the putts to roll relatively true even with the aeration holes still visible. Great job by the grounds crew after the flooding that we had in the area in the spring/early summer. Beware of the traps though, as those haven't been worked in quite a while. But, I can't complain after the AMAZING deal I received on the green fee.
Not the best
With all due respect to the course, the conditions were not good at all. They neglected to tell me that the greens were sanded and boy were they sanded. It felt like putting on the beach. The rough was very thick, possibly setting course up for US Open? I have played there many teams and the conditions were the worst I have seen out there. Maybe that is why it was under $50 to play the South course.
Oh Well...
Evening round
On my way home from work I decided to check out Golf Now to see if I should play or just hit a few balls. Got a deal on the Golf Now app at Blackhorse so tee'd it up at 4:00. The course was in very good condition and the lay out is very good as well. I played the South Course. Highly recommend the golf course.
Excellent Course
Fabulous golf course, greens and fairways perfect. Bunkers needed attention, low to no sand, had not been tended to in some time, underlying fabric clearly visible.
Will Definitely Be Back
This was my first time playing at this facility (the South Course to be specific), and it will definitely not be my last. The greens were all in excellent condition, which is my main concern when I try any new course. The ball stuck excellently, and they were paced almost perfectly. The fairways were also in great condition, besides a select few dead areas. But those areas were few and far between. I enjoyed the layout. The front can be a tad bland, but the back 9 had a ton of character and interesting holes. Especially the holes in the sand quarry. I will be playing this course a ton more now, especially with the golfnow deal.
Blackhorse South - Great Layout
With the exception of the bunkers which were hit hard by the recent floods the course is in great shape, the greens fast and true. This is a good test of golf, play from the right set of tees and this is a fun test, if you play too far back you are unlikely to have much fun.
Very good experience
The course was in very good shape. However the bunkers are still recovering from the floods. Played on a hot deal for a nice price so, it was well worth it.
As a final plus the beer in Jake's Grill was really cold.
Nice course
Just moved here from California and really enjoyed it!!! Only issue was that the sand bunkers were not up to par....pun intended! So just stay out of them and you will enjoy this course! For the price ($40) not bad at all!
Blackhorse South
A bit more challenging than the North but a fun course. Wish there were more yardage markers and bathrooms.
Hot day
Second time I've played here at Blackhorse. Just a stunning golf course , especially the back 9. Will always make plans to play here when I'm in Houston.
We're glad you enjoyed out course! Thanks for playing, Richie. Come back soon!
effects of recent floods
gave the course 3 stars for course conditions because of the side effects of all the recent floods we've had in houston. some of the fairways have bare spots and the greens were in decent to bad shape. spoke with the marshal and he said most of the course was under water and closed for 5 weeks! I've played this course many time and know the course will be back immaculate conditions, but it will take awhile. I paid $40 for the round it that seemed decent given the conditions.
Hey "foagolf" thanks for the review. We are constantly trying to improve the course conditions because of the recent rain and flooding. We hope you come back for another round.
Reason for the great rate
The reason for the great rate was that the course had been flooded and the sand traps were unplayable.
I wish Golfnow did not have such a high convenience fee =
$5.70 per person - that's 20% of the $27.00 rate quoted.
Hey "u000001040419" we are glad you made it out to the course when conditions were not the best. Hope to see you again soon!
