BlackHorse Golf Club - South Course
About
The South Course at BlackHorse is known for the sand quarry that was ingeniously worked into the layout by the design team. Particularly on the back side, the wetlands and sand features come into play prominently and create a totally unique setting for golf.
Getting there : Take Hwy. 290 west to the Spring Cypress exit. Go south (left) under Hwy. 290 to Old Hempstead Hwy. Turn right and drive .5 mile. Turn left on House & Hahl Rd. Then left on Mound Rd. and right on Fry Rd. The entrance is on the right.

Expected much better!
The course was in decent shape and the greens rollled nicely. I was with a buddy and they paired us with two golfers that probably swing a club once a month and made the pace of play excruciatingly slow. Instead of pairing someone with anyone why not ask the skill level because all u do is alienate golfers when u join them with someone that is a much higher handicap.
Blackhorse - South
Nice Facility and friendly staff. Played a late afternoon round in about 3 hours. Course condition well above average. Course was a little dry and "burned" in a few spots. However, that is not a maintenance issue it is a mother nature issue. They need some rain!!! Greens were good. A few of them on the back have some poa annua creeping in but it appears to have been treated.
Highly recommend playing if you have not. I will play again if I get the chance.
Great course
South course is in excellent condition. Nice smooth fast greens. Will definitely play again.
Worth the Trip
Made a 90 plus minute drive to play the South course. It absolutely lived up to the hype (top 5 courses in Houston,TX.) and will certainly be a course I try to play regularly. The course isn't terribly long but the narrow fairways will keep your driver in check. The view from the 17th hole is the best in the area. Watch out for the Gators...
Great course.
Had a great time out there. Found a "Hot Deal" using Golfnow and took advantage.
Fun but Uninspiring
I've played both courses at Blackhorse but I have now played the South course twice. After my first round there I decided not to review the course because of torrential rain that really hurt course conditions before my time out there. I played the South course on a perfect May Friday without a breathe of wind (big bonus for Texas) and while the course has some cool aspects to it and some fun holes I found it to be somewhat bland overall. On the front holes 4,5,6 are a fun trio of short but tight par 4s with a nasty little par three thrown in there. 9 is a demanding hole and one that standsout in my mine. On the back 10, 15, and 18 (especially 18) standout a bit among the rest. Again I enjoyed the course, the wonderful halfway house, and the friendly staff but as for adventure there isn't much to be found in the South course's layout. My other problems were with conditions. While a grass driving range is awesome it only works if there is actually grass on it for one to hit from. The most frustrating situation with the South course at the moment are the bunkers which are so full of fresh sand (I'm assuming they redid the bunkers) that even shots rolling in from the fairway will sit down. Approach shots going into greens will be fried eggs or plug in almost every situation. At the same time I should mention the greens and fairways were well kept and played great.
Great GC
First time playing this course. Overall condition was good. The course definitely requires accurate tee shots!
Great Course
I've played this course a few times in the past, and always enjoyed it but after playing this time I'm convinced this is the best course in northwest Houston bar none.
Tee box only down side
Over all the course was in good shape. The starter and Pro shop were helpful and friendly. The only down side were the tee boxes need grass. The Greens were a bit slower than normal for Black Horse.
The sand traps are finally packing in. The fluffy new sand from last year was tuff.
Just some picky minor thing, but to be a premium course for this area this should be addressed.
I will play this course again, and would recommend it to anyone.
Well kept, challenging bunkers. Must play straight off the tee due to woods that line almost every fairway. Challenging par 3's - must know your yardage or will be in a hazard. Only 6400 from the blues, but difficultly was 8/10.
Worth your money?
While this course was in real good shape, $80 green fees for an average golfer is to much, plus no drink cart girl, had to call pro shop to send them out. If not for GolfNow discount I would not play this course, but over all an enjoyable play
I love this course and the way it plays. I wish the fairways were a little thicker and soft.
Slow
Course was extremely slow. Played only 11 holes in 3 hours and finally quit. No marshal to be seen group in front was a five some, group behind was hitting into us. There are much better choices in the Houston area. Not worth the money or frustration.
