BlackHorse Golf Club - South Course
About
The South Course at BlackHorse is known for the sand quarry that was ingeniously worked into the layout by the design team. Particularly on the back side, the wetlands and sand features come into play prominently and create a totally unique setting for golf.
Getting there : Take Hwy. 290 west to the Spring Cypress exit. Go south (left) under Hwy. 290 to Old Hempstead Hwy. Turn right and drive .5 mile. Turn left on House & Hahl Rd. Then left on Mound Rd. and right on Fry Rd. The entrance is on the right.

Not one of the best
When selecting this course to play I based it on previous reviews and its' ratings against other local courses. I was disappointed in what I experienced. The South course is really two completely different courses in one as you move from front to back. The front is a simple back and forth layout with nothing special other than very "nasty" sand. Almost impossible to play from because it is so soft. Fairways were okay, rough almost nonexistent, greens good with some weed invasion and not much excitement. Back nine was much better, still fairways were not at the level they should be, but greens were great and the challenge was there. Back nine pushed this course fro below average to slightly above average.
Nice Track
The course was in great shape. If it were not for the golf now price ($38.00) I would have not played this course. Personally I think their regular green fees are over priced, but that's the beauty of the free market. Obviously, others do not think so.
I enjoyed the course and I would definitely play there again.
Great Course
Played on a Monday and they were fertilizing the South Course but we got on with a GolfNow purchase so the course wasn't crowded.
Greens were excellent, though a little slow.
Fairways and tees were in good shape, there were a few bare spots on the edges of the rough.
Great course
Excellent experience overall, dificult course though, the only problem is that on the south course we only saw once the vending cart and the clubhouse is far, the 9th hole vending hut was closed, if you havent played this course you should definitely give it a try !!
Rip off at Blackhorse
Fairways had no cushion. You had to scrape the ball around the course.
Sand traps unplayable; either too much sand where you could not maintain a stance or no sand in the middle of the trap so you hit off hardpan.
Areas between sand traps surrounding the greens are beaten down to cart path status. First time I saw that on any golf course.
Front side has too many adjoining fairways that run as hard as billiard tables.
3.5 hours to play twelve holes, not a marshal in sight to move pace of play. Allegedly an interesting layout on the back side Cannot describe back side conditions as we left after hitting a tee shot on thirteen.
Cart girl selling hard liquor should serve as a warning. The libations allow the locals to delude themselves that Blackhorse South is a first rate facility and worth the outrageous greens fee.
I will not be back any time soon. The course requires drastic remediation. At a minimum the management team should find a way to irrigate the fairways, replant the numerous swaths of hardpan and address the poor conditions of the unplayable sand traps.
Aside from the excellent condition of the putting surfaces this golf course borders on an expensive joke.
This course has deep bunkers
Overall great course you just can't get out of those bunkers.
A fun round that could have been better
I liked the south course at BlackHorse for the most part. This is partially because it was a good value and partially because our group had a good time. As far as the course goes, I was not all that impressed. The back nine has most of the memorable holes while the majority of the course is straight and flat with some tree lined fairways, occasional water and lots of dormant grass. The greens where in pretty good shape and putted true, but I wish they were more plush. The fairways were okay, but very thin and the rough was non-existent. Also, they charge a small fortune for adult beverages...how about $27 for a six pack.
Good course
Well maintained & challenging course. Recommend it but seek discount course fee
Fast Greens
Perfect weather and the greens were excellent, fast and rolled very true. Fairways were dormant but tight so it was consistent. Back nine was more picturesque and had more character. Can't wait to play it in the summer.
Must be fantastic location whe everything has greened up.
Challenging; couse management is essential and not just about the driver. Will know better the next time I play.
True challenge for every golfer at Blackhorse South course
I have played this course roughly 10 times and it is true shotmakers course. Choose your tees carefully, if you are not hitting it well off the tee you will struggle. A lot of uphill approach shots that you don't notice til you are on the green. Front nine is fairly straight forward, but the back nine really gets your attention with the quarry holes. Fairways in good shape as were the greens. Got a great deal on Golfnow, otherwise couldn't of played there.
Excellent course with Challenging design
The green of this course are one of the best I ever played lately.
Great rate for a Great course
Found a great price for the South course on Golfnow. The discounted rate only made an Exceptional experience even better. The course is in excellent shape, and ideal for the cooler weather.
Really good layout and plenty of features
The course is in really good shape and presents a good challenge to play. Like many courses a good shot is rewarded. The only thing I found frustrating was as a single I had to wait for the groups in front of me. The course was busy because of a tournament on the North course. This was the cause of the slower play. The up side was I had a chance to appreciate the beauty of this course. The 17th hole was beautiful.
Beautiful
Just a beautiful well maintained course. 5 tee boxes makes for a great day.
Beautiful course
Had a really good experience here, the whole property, club house, halfway houses, courses, and maintenance are just top notch. I fell in love with it.
Pristine condition,challenging layout, beautiful views
The south course at Blackhorse is a challenging layout with fast undulating greens and deep white sand bunkers. Accuracy off the tee is the key as this course is tree lined with lateral water coming into play on multiple holes. This course is a real beauty, particularly on the back 9 where several interesting holes are born from the quarry layout. Great fun!
Great greens. Great condition
Great course. Great condition. Staff was very friendly. Range was nicely maintained.
Tough course but great experience
This course is very difficult for a novice (hack) like myself. It was in great shape and in my opinion is one the best courses in Houston. I would recommend this course to anyone but would include a disclaimer that if you a bogey golfer or worse it may prove very difficult for you.
