El Tigre Club de Golf
About
Located in Nuevo Vallarta, El Tigre Club de Golf enjoys views that stretch to the western Sierra Madre. The design team of Robert Von Hagge, Mike Smelek, and Rick Baril transformed what used to be a flat piece of land into a lush, tropical paradise. Nine water features were added, which come into play on 12 holes, and the terrain was molded and contoured to provide interesting elevation changes. The golf course's proximity to the ocean means that it is also subject to strong prevailing winds, especially in the early evening. The course finishes with two of its most difficult holes. El Tigre Club de Golf's par-3 17th has plenty of sand and water in play to prepare you for the beastly par-5 finishing hole. This 621-yard monster is practically a par 6 with water down the entire left side and a green surrounded by sand.

Poor conditions, nice staff, wouldn't pay half what we did to come back
First have to say the staff are very nice but I think they may have been making fun of me in Spanish to co-workers but whatever.
The course is what I am here to warn you about.
Horrible greens! Half of them were sand or burnt (I understand due to the weather here in PV). The fairways were decent but many spots with no grass as well.
Flat course and lots of water and tons of large sand bunkers (as big as the fairways!).
Overall I wouldn't suggest this course to a friend but if the conditions improved I would.
I paid $425 for my girlfriend and I to pay with rental clubs (titleist). I wouldn't pay half to play this course again.
El Tigre
the course was in poor shape in my opinion. The greens were fair at best, some had areas with almost no grass. Fairways were on the dry side but OK. We played Litibu the day before and there was no comparison.. back to Litibu we go..
Go elsewhere..
This course was one we were looking forward to in Nuevo Vallarta. After playing our group all said they wouldn't play it again. We paid $128 a person to play and the course wasn't worth half that. The greens were completely burned out or covered in dirt/seed and not worth playing. The sand traps, which cover a lot of the course were like hitting off concrete and did the same damage to clubs. The pace of play was very slow for a heat of the day round at noon. We had 2-3 groups backed up at every tee box. The staff wasn't attentive or friendly at all and the pro shops prices are ridiculous. Average shirt price was around 1300-1600 pesos, which currently is around $85-110 dollars. Not impressed and wouldn't recommend to a friend.
Good Value, Greens Need Work
Would have given course a 4 star rating except for the condition of the greens, too many brown patches on some of the holes. Rest of course was in good shape and green speed was good. Staff friendly, did not eat at the course
Good track, but ....
Course layout is above average, but course condition at present is poor. Good combination on right-to-left, left-to-right. Water in play on 13 holes as I recall, but very fair. Tee selection makes a difference. 6-8 greens burned out & others in poor condition. Staff in pro shop & in start/finish areas acted like they could care a less if people were there or not (some exceptions) - not an incentive to return. Merchandise reasonably to high priced.
Nice course. Had a slow pace to start but improved after 9.
Decent value at Golf Now price but too high at regular rate. Good service, well maintained, friendly staff. Would definitely play it again.
El Tigre for Thanksgiving
Great course. I will be back to play it again for sure.
El Tigre's roar
very nice glad I got to play and see the Tigers for a third the price, thanks GolfNow
El Tigre a good value
Like any other golf course, if you hit the ball down the middle, you can score. I played on an extremely hot and humid day for October, but there was a little breeze and the course was relatively empty so I played in 3 hours with another single I paired-up with. The wind picked up on 15 and that made the last few holes a lot more challenging, especially 18. I enjoyed the layout. If I had one complaint it was that the greens were pretty slow, but I suspect the heat contributed to that. The course is fair and fun. I strongly recommend a value-based (read as discount) tee time as the normal rates are a bit pricey by my standards.
Book via Internet
When checking in at the hotel and was told the price to play I checked out Golf Now and got to play for a third of the price. Definitely worth the money when booked through Golf Now. The weather was hot but the course was in excellent condition and the staff was extremely helpful and gracious.
Oasis in Paradise
We have been playing this course for the last 4 winters, from January to April, about 25 games per winter.
We stay in a condo on the course called Green Bay.
The site is a gated community with single family homes....some worth several millions and the condos are limited to three stories and very well maintained.
The owner of the site is Paradise Village takes excellent care of all its properties.
The whole gated community, including the golf course, are maintained to perfection. You have the impression that you are in a botanical garden...palm trees, flowers, birds, butterflies...etc we call it Oasis in Paradise. The course has water on 13 holes...fairways slope towards the water, lots of sand traps, greens are true and fast....maintenance is excellent.
All the staff are always very nice and helpful, they make us feel like home.
The clubhouse is beautiful, the food is at least 3 stars and the service is 5 stars...Camarino is 6 stars.
We just love El Tigre and we will be back in 2015 for 3 months.
It is an expensive course to play but it is worth all of it
Mo Jo
Bad administration,the carts are old.
The greens bad conditions. And it's expensive
Rainy Season Review
Played the first week of July in early afternoon for a GN Hot Deal price, which I would recommend. I would not go near full or even half rack rate in the current course condition. Overall the course has a lot of promise but conditions are not up to snuff. A few holes are a bit over the top with forced carries/water/bunkers.
I was very disappointed in the condition of the fairways; looked like grass 'corn rows', very uneven and hard to draw a fair lie. Course doesn't seem to drain well, as every tee shot plugged/mudded (did not happen at Marina Vallarta course, which had pristine fairways same week). Played quite long from the Blues. The greens were livable but very slow and a bit bumpy, grass just didn't look healthy. Much of this may just be rainy season effects, but again, Marina didn't have those problems.
Course maintenance crews were a real bother for the first 6 holes, seemed to be driving by, mowing, idling awkwardly just behind the tee box, etc on every single shot. We teed off around noon.
Pro shop folks were nice, as was Marshall that drove around to us many times and brought free cold bottled water and ice towels - that was awesome. Clubs and shoes cleaned after the round, sweet.
We only saw two other groups the entire round.
Play like a Tiger at El Tigre
Three connecting lakes splash water across 13 holes, making El Tigre one tough cat. Choose your tees wisely because Director of Golf Phil Anthony Woodrum says that El Tigre plays about 200 yards longer than its yardage on the card. It's routing is a unique mix of five par-3s and five par-5s. That allows good golfers the chance to really score well, especially if their gambles pay off on the four risk-reward par-5s. The course winds through a housing development although the homes are virtually never in play. The land is mostly flat, so the ponds and doglegs around trees and the whopping 186 bunkers provide the shot-making elements. The signature shot comes at the sixth hole, a short par-3 to an island green. The clubhouse is home to one of the largest pro shops around, and the restaurant serves great fresh seafood for lunch or dinner.
El Tigre
This course is a must in PV. The holes are very visually pleasing and challenging. They actually help you shape your shots.
A good day golfing
I spend winters in the area and have played El Tigre on several occasions. Teamed up with a local buddy to take advantage of the GolfNow rate, which was deeply discounted from El Tigre's standard rates...which are the main reason I don't play here much anymore. The property is contained within a a lare gated resort..Paradise Village... and offers all the amenities of same.. beautiful grounds and facilities, npt much traffic, high end ambience.
The course is fairly flat and winds its way through the residences of Paradise Village. It feels open however as the homes rarely intrude on the course. The natural layout of the course has been augmented by adding links styles mounds down many of the fairways to add some topography to the course. This is in my mind its main flaw..it is a contrived experience, done well but these types of courses just can't compare with those which were built on a more amenable piece of real estate. Still a great day and a good challenge.
Nice place
Overall excellent course with lots of challenging holes but with some fun, less threatening holes as well. A good test for most. Greens were a bit bumpy for a course that looks so good everywhere else. Some TLC on the greens would really improve this course to a 5 star. Kind of pricey but the golfnow rate was worth it for one round.
Best public course in Vallarta
Even though there are more scenic courses in Vallarta such as The Four Seasons at Punta Mita, this is in my opinion the best course. The courses at Vista Vallarta have great layouts, but are hard to reach, and I do not enjoy them as much.
Experience isn't just about the course
I played El Tigre twice during a recent vacation. I won't likely be back. The course is in good shape. Main hazards and difficulty are due to water, otherwise it is a relatively easy wide forgiving course.
I was a surprised by the staff and their attitudes. Last time I was here, they were welcoming and friendly (I speak Spanish, so it is not about language). This year, both times, the experience was, at best, indifference. From the pro shop, starters, caddies hanging around to the greens keepers, who neither stopped what they were doing, nor moved out of my way on two holes). The staff, just didn't seem to care.
To get my business, a course needs to be challenging and then the experience, created by the staff, needs to be warm, friendly and helpful. The course is good if you don't pay full fare and yet, I will tend toward Los Flamingoes and Marina Vallarta where the whole experience can be had.
Beautiful Day
Golf Now deal made this a good bargain. The course is challenging with lots of water. It also has a number of forgiving holes (wide fairways and rough). Well maintained course and I will be back tomorrow.
