The Golf Club at Dove Mountain - Wild Burro/Saguaro
About
Nestled in the desert foothills of the Tortolita Mountain Range, the 27 holes at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain feature dramatic elevation changes and stunning views. The three nines were all designed by Jack Nicklaus and are played in three different 18-hole combinations. The Wild Burro/Saguaro golf course combines Nicklaus' favorite nine, Wild Burro, with the front nine of the Accenture Match Play Championship. The golf course features intricately contoured greens and carefully placed fairway bunkers. The course plays through canyons and desert washes covered in centuries-old Saguaro cacti. The third, fourth and fifth holes on the Wild Burro nine are notably challenging with the third featuring an "island green" standing amidst sand and cacti.

#3 on Saguaro Photo submitted by timstaley on 10/25/2012
Great Layout
First time playing. The layout it very well thought out. I enjoy desert courses that reward shot placement so this course suited me in that way. I played the burro/saguaro course. I felt there was no rinky-dinky holes that some desert courses have. I really enjoyed the challenge of golf management on this course. Greens and tees are in good condition, can't complain. The fairways and fringes are really bad right now. I understand given covid and the high temperatures, you have to cut corners for awhile. The bunkers as well have no sand, I scalded a bunker shot into the desert. Given the course conditions, I would have wanted to pay a little less. Nonetheless, I would love to try this course again when the conditions are better, unfortunately, It will most likely be too pricey for me to play.
Lack of Covid precautions
None of the staff was wearing a mask. When I asked the front desk why he wasn’t wearing a mask he said it wasn’t required. Just foolish. The guys outside could distance themselves and they were very friendly. However there were rakes in the bunkers and water in the coolers. A nice touch but dangerous given we are in AZ. On top of that the yahoos in front of us were playing the tips and then searching for their balls in the washes. Won’t be back any time soon. We all have a responsibility to keep golf safe and available during this crisis and this course does not take that seriously.
slow play
We had to skip back nine hole due to slow play. The course was not busy but they need a ranger to monitor the pace of play. We had to wait for 5 holes for a foursome then finally we skipped a hole in order to finish in 4 hours. if not we would have been a 5.5 hour round.
It’s ok
Course is a difficult task could be in better shape for the money.
Disappointed
The course is in rough shape. Fairways and sand traps were subpar at best. The greens were running a little slower than previous rounds. I love the practice facility it is the best place to improve your game. We didn’t have a cart girl, but the snack shack was open which was fine. We only payed 40 to play so it was worth it for us, however I wouldn’t pay any more than that right now. Personally I think this is the most challenging course in the Tucson area and you need to play it several time to know where to miss. Beautiful scenery and amazing place.
summer golf in AZ
Arizona summer golf, hot and windy. Especially windy today, gusts in the 40s!! I bet the wind cost me 5 strokes a side...but it does make for an entertaining round of golf!
Best practice facility around, I always go early so I have plenty of time to work on my short game.
Greens are smooth and undulating but not too fast right now, putting is sort of pleasant instead of terrifying.
There is construction too, and the cart path is blocked, so good luck finding hole #5 on Tortolita, it isn't marked at all.
Pace of play was excellent, on a hot week day like this there's almost nobody on the course.
Disappointing conditions
I know it is summer & the number of golfers is down & water is expensive but the course is in the worst shape ever. Fairways are very dried out. Sand traps are like cement. We only played 9 holes & went to the Highlands golf course & played the other 9. Their course is lush & green.
Father’s Day
Today was Father’s Day, and tee off time was mid morning around 7:00-8:00 am. The entire round had NO CART PERSON and the coarse was booked. Paying $100 a round and not having refreshments (beer, water, etc) out on the coarse is absolutely ridiculous, especially during Father’s Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not to mention that the pin placements on the carts GPS didn’t match ANY of the hole locations. For instance the GPS would tell you the pin was in the front location and it was actually in the far back location. Sometimes the difference was about 25-30 yards. I was very disappointed with the coarse management in these two instances. As far as the how the coarse looked, well absolutely Phenomenal, Beautiful, True, and TUFF.
Underwhelming for price
This course didn’t live up to my expectations. It was not in very good shape — greens were shaggy and slow, fairways brown with a lot of bare spots, bunkers were rock hard. The scenery and views are outstanding, and there are some interesting holes. Buttoo many forced carries in my opinion (especially around greens).
It has a lot of potential and I’m sure it was an excellent track when the PGA played here, but seems to have fallen off.
Great layout, thought I would pass out, from heat and no water.
Evidently I could have brought my ice chest with me in the cart, and there was a halfway house but I did not get any info on were the halfway house or about the ice chest Yes I should probably have asked, I did ask if there would be any place to get water on the course. I was told there was a cart person, never saw him or her for 4 hours. The only reason I could play 18 is because there was a water fountain after 9 holes. You need water in 105 degree weather. I told the staff it was my first time there and the only information I got was where the first tee was. There were no tee markers on the course. I am not sure how you get covid with tee markers in place. It is a great layout that my group of 24 would have enjoyed playing ,that plays a yearly event at different cities on 4 different courses. I cannot recommend Dove Mountain. Good thing I was very hydrated today before the round.
Dove Mountain
This is a challenging course. From the men’s forward tee still required distance to cover the washes. Must drive straight or it will be a frustrating round of golf. Enjoy the scenery and pace of play. Greens were not as quick as it should have been but overall conditions are great for this time of the year.
Looks a bit dry but is in good shape
It's the dry time of year and the house shows it. The dry patches are nice turf though and eminently playable. Greens are, overall, really good. This is a great time to experience Dove, for cheap. Photo was taken to document the Bighorn Fire, but does show the nice green with fairway & rough in foreground.
Hard To Image The Pros Playing This Course!!!!!!!
First off, I normally do not write reviews and a negative one at that, but it’s a must this time.
Pro show was not inviting and welcoming, seem more like a hassle for the staff to check me in. Cart/ bag attendant was no where to be found, had to wait to get my cart. The carts were dirty and looked like they were poorly cleaned.
Practice facilities were well maintained and serviceable. However could have utilized more space between teeing areas given COVID-19.
Course..... first impression, what a dump for the money!!!!! The course looks like it has not been maintained since COVID-19. Fairways, rough, tee boxes and greens all burnt out they may not have been watered for months. Greens were long and requires some cutting and care. Tee boxes, ok there were signs/ markers next to the carts paths, but nothing to identify the teeing areas- no markers on each side of the box. What happen to them? All sand traps need major work to include back filling with actual sand (love powder type). Traps have very little sand and are a mixture of sand and rocks.
Where was the beverage cart, not one during my 4:15 hour round. Snake was not even open, why...... if water coolers were removed, the course should have had something given the high temps/ heat.
For $87 (Golf Now Rate) I expected more for the money...... this is a $30-49 course in it current state.
