Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield, just outside of Hartford, is an Arnold Palmer Signature course. It is one of the toughest rounds in all of New England. The course sprawls across a beautiful landscape covered with natural wetlands and forests of towering maples, oaks, and elm trees. There are strategically placed bunkers in addition to the natural challenges but they are not excessive. The wetlands come into play on almost half of the holes at Gillette Ridge Golf Club. The approaches to the greens are seemingly intimidating but as long as you don't hit short there is always bailout area on one side. Since each hole presents a unique challenge, there is not just one signature hole, but one of the most memorable holes is the par-5 second, a true risk-reward test that requires both length and accuracy.

Overall, I like it

Gillette's layout is a lot of fun. There are some very challenging holes but many are very fair if you hit it where you should. The fairways and greens were in very good shape overall but there was no sand/seed in the bottles on the carts so the divots don't get filled. The tee boxes were not very good. Others have commented on the sand traps and they are AWFUL. They aren't sand but mostly firm packed dirt and rocks. Though it hadn't rained all week, the traps were also very wet and some had standing water. If you just stay out of the sand the whole round....

The course is picturesque and challenging

Course was in outstanding condition. The layout is very challenging, there is great variety from hole to hole. The views are breathtaking and the course makes you want to come back the next day and play again.

Still good

We had a slow threesome in front of us. Unfortunately this was compounded by an insistence that they play off the blue tees. The course is showing signs of a season of use but still good greens. I am hoping the management team does not let it go the way of other properties I heard they manage.

great layout, challenging and demanding

the course is a great layout and a good value for the money however the bunkers were washed out and the tee boxes were in rough shape, a little maintenance would go along way

Course in great condition; slow play

The course is in great playing condition. Play on a Tuesday morning was painfully slow; no ranger was in evidence, and a call to the Pro Shop to complain was apparently ignored. Maintenance personnel were working on the bunkers, and showed little deference or interest to the golfers.

Fantastic layout

Gillette ridge is a great course and is always well maintained. Bunkers are never in good condition, but that is IT. Otherwise it plays like a private club.

Not for the weekend hacker

This course demands pinpoint accuracy. If you have that, you will do OK reaching the greens, at which point you will probably 3 put. Pins were placed as if it was Sunday of the US Open (It was Saturday afternoon in Connecticut). If you require a bit of forgiveness on the fairways, this course is not for you.

Lots of sand traps, all poorly maintained.

All in all, it was a big disappointment.

A mixed package.

This is a tough course that used to cost twice as much. The greens need a serious ball-mark repair campaign and the bunkers need fresh sand. I think low-handicappers are disappointed that it isn't maintained as well as it used to be and high-handicappers are scared away by the tough layout. Many holes are "hit it perfect or the ball is dead". Still I had fun and it was a good value.

Not for faint of heart

I like this course, but it is very challenging. I'm a 6 and played the blue tees and I think its plenty hard from there. If your off a little, good luck. I lost 5 or 6 pro v1's that day and wasnt hitting it that bad. Bunkers are horrendous, unplayable. Greens were okay. A little slow, bumpy and not that true. good luck making any putts. All in all, I enjoyed the pain and deemed it worthwhile for 19.00.

What could be

This course could be so nice. Everything is just ok. Wide open, very pretty visually, hard course. Several years ago it was very nice, fast greens. Greens are slow and have tons of ball marks due to wet course, bunkers are dirt and mud. They have not been touched all year if not two. I could be so good.

Good and Bad

I was expecting poor conditions throughout the course. I found the tees spotty, the fairways in good condition, the greens fair but inconsistent. The traps were the issue. Dirt and mud were the norm. The man in the pro shop was very helpful. The starter was a bit too gabby for my taste. I paid a very reasonable price and would do it again simply because of the uniqueness of the holes.

Great Layout

The course layout is great and very challenging. The bunkers had not had any attention for quite some time as there was grass growing in many of them. The greens could have been faster. For the savings on Golf Now it was well worth it!

Extremely wet fairways and poorly maintained greens and bunkers

This was my first time playing this course. Right from the start the fairways were a big issue. It hadn't rained any substantial amount in 2+ weeks so I never would have expected them to be so wet. The course is in a very low lying area and does not drain well at all. Nearly every fairway was like hitting off a saturated sponge. The bunkers were also very poorly maintained. I would not play this course again because of the lack of maintenance. But for $25, it isn't a horrible deal.

Each hole has a little quirk in it , challenging & fun

First time around this track, and enjoyed very much. Not knowing the course cost me some shots. Course well taken care of, with one exception bunkers haven't been power raked or worked, and lack of rakes around them. Would for sure put the course on my keeper list.
No matter where your handicap falls great golf course and well worth the money.
Will play again next year on return to New England.

The course is a great layout, some issues with conditions and appearance.

Evidently the folks who play their do not believe in fixing divot marks on the green or in the fairway which hurts everyone, typical lazy Connecticut folks. Some of the flower beds and shrubs looked a bit un-kept. The greens were slow, but overall I still love playing the course.

Course needs attention. Ranger unpleasant.

Played this course 3 times and a few years ago it was pristine. Two weeks ago (8/4/2013) Played 18. Fairways were ok, but had a lot of bare spots. Tee boxes were AWFUL. Looked like no divots got replaced. Several greens had large divots as if people hit irons off them.

My group got a late start (our fault). Ranger came by and gave us a lecture on pace of play for 5 minutes. A pleasant "speed up please" would have worked fine.

I've played better courses for less than $65 per round (some include GPS on the cart btw). Heard owner of Gillette was having trouble and it was shown on the day I played.

Really too bad as the first two times I played the course was really great.
