fix the greens please
something is obviously wrong with this course. maybe a money issue. the greens are really bad, more sand than grass! i probably wont play here again.
Needs some time to get back to nice
I have played this course numerous times over the last couple of years, but not since last year. This course has some very challenging holes mixed with some holes that are quite easy, but overall I like the layout (other than some holes very close together. We played the course on 5/3, and I have to say that I was disappointed in the condition. Driving range was very beat up, very old balls to hit, but the putting green and chipping area were fine.
They had recently punched the greens, so a lot of sand, but like all courses, necessary to do (did not know they punched them since I booked online, so I can accept the mediocre condition of the greens).
Where is the $ being spent on this course? Fairways were average at best, sand was decent but inconsistent and many tee boxes were terrible.
Sue in the pro shop was pleasant, as was all staff.
Would I recommend this course to a friend? Yes, but maybe in another month or so when it hopefully gets back to where it has been and should be.
Good Local Course
This course was a good value for rate paid. The only issue I had with the course was the greens were just airyated. There are a few tight fairways, due to trees, but overall the course was good. I would play again.
Fairways in rough shape and greens cut so close its like putting on dirt.
The Golf Now deal was good at $20 but it appears the winter was rough on the course. Fairways were covered with weeds and the greens were cut so close it was like putting on dirt. Hopefully as spring approaches they'll be able to get the course in better shape. Be careful when playing as the fairways are close especially #14, a wayward shot could land on #13 green. Also know that the staff is always super friendly.
sad condition
The round started off with no parking and then no carts available. The carts finally showed up about 5 mins after our tee time. Most of the tee boxes where in ok shape at best. The fairways where in good shape and a little soft, but only one of the traps had any real sand in it. Overall i liked the layout of the course and think if they had more carts....and maybe GPS, and spent some money on the traps and roughs it could be a good course.
challenges
On No 16 it plays long. Keep to the right. There are 2 bunkers. Easy on the putting otherwise very long on the putting.
Course is in terrible shape
cross-posting my thoughts from yelp because people need to know what's going on here before they drop cash to go play.
I played the GC @ McKinney for the first time on 4.15.14. I had an idealgolfer package deal with them that was about to expire so I used it. I wish I hadn't.
To start, the range mats are the cheap kind that leave green plastic all over your irons. The range balls were about 20% misshapen/damaged/unusable and 40% dead as doornails. We had to dig through the one giant bucket of balls on the range to find a few worth hitting, and even then half of those were so dead that off the driver they flew half as high and half as long.
The fairways and rough are plagued by weeds and bare spots. The greens were like putting on greased cardboard with pitch marks and holes in it. Only maybe 2 of the 18 greens were remotely playable. 5 different greens had sizable holes that were filled with sand, and one green had a massive gouge in it that could have been vandalism or an animal, or who knows... but it was severely damaged. The tee boxes are patchy and unlevel in many places. The entire course was bone dry, except for the marshy areas and the bunkers that were somehow very muddy and otherwise rock-hard.
The layout of the course is strange, with some holes playing very close together and a lot of back-and-forth driving to get from green to tee. You pass the same few points several times during the round. The cart path itself was very damaged and unlevel, with one part on the 10th about to cave in so badly that they had to rope it off with a fairly permanent-looking sign. Why not just fix it instead of installing a "go around" sign? Hopefully they do fix it because the layout is anything but walker friendly, so you *must* take a cart.
It's really a shame because the beautiful piece of land that this course is on should yield a very impressive course. If someone with some knowledge, ability, and desire to maintain it properly would take charge, I think it could be a real gem. As it is though, the playing conditions are just north of terrible. For the rates they charge, it should be more well-kept. I wouldn't play there again if it was free. There are many, many more places to play nearby for the same (or less!) money and that actually take care of their course.
needs maintenance
Dry in Texas but there was no grass in many of the fairways. Not well maintained around the course.
We were disappointed with the course.
decent golf course
It's early Spring and after a recent hard rain, so I wasn't expecting perfect conditions. The greens were rolling quite well, as usual....you do want to hit approach shots above the holes, as stopping a downhill putt is nearly impossible. There were quite a few 4-putts in my group. Grass is starting to grow in the fairways, so that's a good sign, but the tee boxes are in serious need of attention. To say they're not in good condition wound be an understatement. All in all, an enjoyable round. Pace of play around 4 hours, not bad.
Interesting
Not to difficult, but never a boring hole. I found the pace of play excellent for a. Friday afternoon.
This COULD be a real Gem, but...........
Got a Golfnow deal for $20 to play this course and a bit disappointed. Let me first day that I don't really care for courses built around apartments/condos. The only benefit to this is that these courses are pretty tight and require "target" golf - placing a premium on quality Iron shots (which I like). The course itself is fun, narrow fairways and the greens in decent shape. However, I don't remember ever playing on a fairway this rock hard!!! I was afraid to really to after it and take divots for fear I'd break my wrist or something!! Sand traps are well placed but filled with dirt and just as rock hard as the fairway (I mean, seriously - you're actually hitting down into the pavement). All I could think of during my round was "this course could be one of North Texas' best kept secrets" if they'd just put some $$$$$ into it. Winter really did a number on this course and if I didn't have a 45 minute drive to contend with, I'd probably come back. All the staff were especially nice. Driving range has room for about 10 and mats only. Now that $70 weekend fee on the GN cover page is simply RIDICULOUS and I hope it's an error. No one should pay more than $30 to play this track - even on a weekend!! While I love the challenge and natural character the course offers, the overall conditions make it hard for me to return. Perhaps I'll visit again well into the Summer to see if anything improves.
Challenging track
Fairways beginning to green up. Should look fantastic this spring/summer. The ample, sloping greens putted true and 'crazy fast'. Expect them to slow up a little as new grass comes in. Some tees were well worn and needs seeding. Course challenges all skills. The clubhouse, range and facilities are comfortable and amiable. Semi-public, so members receive preference for tee times before Noon. I'll go back when the course greens up.
good course
This is the 2nd time playing this course last time we had afternoon tee time and the play was a lot slower love the speed with the early tee time.
Fun course, tough pin location
First time playing this course, greens were fast and the pin location was brutal, if you are putting down hill and miss the hole you're in trouble. Staff was very friendly and the course was in good shape. Great value with hot deal from golf now.
Other hole fairways and Greens come in your way
This is a good course, but there are few holes that come in ways of other hole fairway or greens. Be careful if you're playing erratic shots, you can easily cause damages
This course is going downhill fast.
The course condition is terrible. I won't be surprised if they lose their greens this year from maintenance issues. Looks like they are running out of money to take care of it.
Great time, great people
Such a friendly place to be. From the memebrs to the staff everybody asks how you're doin. Free range balls. Decent practice area. Nice carts. The greens are taken care of but the pin location on some holes was laughable. Overall a great time. Great atmosphere
Un-manicured Course
This was one of the worse courses I have ever played. It was un-manicured, no sand in the sand traps, the green were rough and were obviously not kept up. Could be due to the weather but if they are going to over tee times, they should have tried to make it playable. Part of the difficulty of the course could be due to the holes placed in odd places (I don't mind the challenge) but I will not be coming back again.
Liked the course
Being the first day of March, the course was hard and fast since we have not had much rain, but it is really a fun and challenging course. I would like to play it again when the grass comes in. I would not want to walk this course--it is really a long way between a lot of holes. Bunkers were not in good shape overall. Highly recommend it though.
Favorite Value Course in DFW
I play GC of McKinney quite often. I've played as a single, paried up, on the weekend, and during the week. I've never had anything less than a great experience.
There are always great deals for this course on GolfNow and they always include free range balls. This is a great bang for you buck course.
