Vaaler Creek Golf Club
About
Conveniently located near downtown San Antonio not too far from Austin, Vaaler Creek Golf Club has a memorable layout of gently rolling hills dotted with creeks, ponds and lakes. The course begins with a challenging front nine and then eases up a bit on the back nine, but overall it is a formidable test. The greens are tricky and demanding, especially on the front nine where there are some severe slopes and undulations. The back nine greens are a bit flatter but they still require careful attention. The rolling, contoured fairways are lined with trees and there are deep bunkers strategically guarding the greens, but luckily there are only seventeen of them. Water hazards come into play throughout and there are also several doglegs and blind shots if there wasn’t enough to keep you on your toes.

Never disappoints
Vaaler Creek never disappoints. Played on a Saturday afternoon as a single. Beautifully conditioned course is becoming the norm at Vaaler Creek. Once the upgrades and a few bunkers are finished, there’s nothing holding this course back from the potential 5 Stars across the board. The greens were excellent, rolling very true. The course layout provides variety throughout the round. Great course, great value. Continues to be a favorite and a hill country gem as it’s yet to disappoint. Recommend to anyone from Austin or San Antonio to get to this course and check it out. Worth the drive.
Very good course
I always enjoy playing this course an it is in good shape.
Amazing Golf Course
Small clubhouse, and bare minimum amenities... BUT all the money saved on those thing was/is put into the golf course. And boy does it show! Great layout that offers a variety of holes, and shots. Forgiving fairways for higher handicaps. (Only negative, the bunkers were in poor condition, but in fairness there was a 2 day rain a couple nights before). Course conditions are amazing, perfectly manacured fairways and greens, which roll true and can hold, and catch spin for more advanced players. (Only negative, uneven tee boxes, which are in nice condition other than the unevenness... just a pet peev). The staff is super friendly and accommodating, i had a 7am as a single, and the paired me up (which is fair), but the pro in the shop let me go off first. Finished 18 in 2 hours, and asked to replay, and they were packed, but they worked me in, which is greatly appreciated because playing this course for the replay price is nothing short of stealing. Pace of play was a bit rough, but not surprising, they deserve to be busy. Very fair food and beverage prices.
This is hands down the best course I have ever played that I booked on golfnow. Excellent value for the price.
Hidden Gem
Beautiful course
New carts
Fairways and greens were fantastic
Spectacular set up and views
Will definitely play there again
GREAT Texas Hill Country course
The fairways and greens were in excellent condition. The front nine greens are very challenging. Simply a great place to play.
Among Hill Country’s Best Courses
Vaaler Creek is one of the hill country’s best courses. A 35 mile drive up 281 from the 1604 Loop, this place is worth the drive. The course doesn’t play long, less than driver can be hit often. The variety of holes is outstanding. Course difficulty comes in 2nd shots into the greens and the greens themselves. The greens are very undulated, as much as any course around, but are in great condition. Very grainy, as uphill puts were slow, while downhill puts are extremely quick. Tee to green looked fantastic. The bunker on 10 is finally finished, but unfortunately it seems as if 2-3 other bunkers have been slightly neglected now and need resanded. None hurt play, but those are the only thing keeping this course from being 5 stars at this point. The only holes affected are the new pond/ bunker addition on 7 and the bunkers guarding the 13th and 15th greens. None affect play in the least bit as you just attempt to avoid them on shots into the greens anyway. These were the only thing keeping the conditions and course from being all 5 stars for me. Enjoy the 18th holes 2nd shot. It’s one of the best of any course around. A definite worth the drive course, among the best the hill country has to offer.
Love this course
We drive 50 minutes to play this course because it is such a good value. Beautiful setting cut into the hill country. Each hole unique and challenging. Pace of play good. A few traps are in disrepair and there are places that are suppose to have water and never do. The bathroom at the pro shop is disgusting but hey....the course is so fun and beautiful for the price that we will always look forward to our next round here!!
A must play course
I’ve always want to play here but was a little far from my house. But after playing here I’ll make the extra drive with no hesitations. Very well taken care of course.
Nice Sunday Round
This was my first time at Vaaler Creek and I really enjoyed the round. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful! The course on the other hand was difficult (but in a good way) and very challenging. I enjoyed the challenge and will be back soon!
Hidden gem
Course conditions at Vaaler Creek never disappoint. Fairways are plush and greens are as good or better than area resorts. There are some challenging shot placement holes and some greens are a bit tricky, but overall an excellent layout. Having played the course a number of times I only had one issue. The pin placement on several holes was in positions that the ball had no chance to stop close to (ie. On the edge of a steep break, etc.). With ample room on most greens it would have been reasonable to have more equitable pin placements. Overall though, an excellent course. This would be my home course if it was closer to where I lived.
Fun in the Hill Country
I really enjoyed playing this layout. The greens rolled very true and I sank my fair share of long putts on this day because of that. Everyone was friendly And made me feel right at home.
Love it
One of the best, if not the BEST daily Gee course in Centeal Texas.
A beautiful and challenging corse in excellent condition!
Wind did affect ball flight but previous play w/o wind was enjoyable.
Beautiful Layout
This course is a bit confusing! The layout is outstanding...but...you run up on holes with sand that has not been taken care of and spots where water should be and is not....not sure what is going on with this course....then there is a hole where the sand is perfect...hope they get their act together and pull it all together....probably won't be able to afford to play it then...in the mean time it is a fun course!
Great Course, Great value
Wish that this course would remain somewhat undiscovered, but I see all the houses under construction around the course, and know this will someday be private or semi-private. Love the layout of this course, and the course is still greening up from the winter, but is in good shape. One more good rain will make it great for the rest of the spring.
