Vaaler Creek Golf Club
About
Conveniently located near downtown San Antonio not too far from Austin, Vaaler Creek Golf Club has a memorable layout of gently rolling hills dotted with creeks, ponds and lakes. The course begins with a challenging front nine and then eases up a bit on the back nine, but overall it is a formidable test. The greens are tricky and demanding, especially on the front nine where there are some severe slopes and undulations. The back nine greens are a bit flatter but they still require careful attention. The rolling, contoured fairways are lined with trees and there are deep bunkers strategically guarding the greens, but luckily there are only seventeen of them. Water hazards come into play throughout and there are also several doglegs and blind shots if there wasn’t enough to keep you on your toes.

Special place
This was my second time playing Vaaler Creek (May 2017 was my first round here), and once again it did not disappoint. The course is lush and immaculately well maintained tee to green, and the greens are well manicured and rolled smoothly and true, just as they did 6 months ago.
The landscape is a rugged, remote feeling bit of Hill Country. An oasis of golf carved seamlessly into a wild, lonely place (which I love, personally). There’s a slowly developing residential neighborhood around the course which does not diminish or interfere with the experience in any way (for me at least).
I’ve played most of the public tracks in and around Austin (and worked at a pretty exclusive private club for a while that I played several times), and this is my favorite of the lot.
Play This Course for a Great Golf Outing
2nd time playing this course and even though I didn’t play as well as the 1st time, that’s all on me. The course is beautiful, very well maintained, and the carts have GPS systems. The holes are challenging, often with beautiful Hill Country vistas, yet still fare and scorable. I’m 62, a 25 HC, not a particularly long hitter, and have to drive 30+ miles to get there, but I’ll go back every chance I get. If you’ve not yet played this course, you’re in for a real treat!
Great Course
Third time playing this course and it was great. With the weather changes in the fall you would expect some brown spots or fairways to be not ideal. The course was perfect. Fairways and greens were in great shape. This course is definitely worth the drive from New Braunfels.
good track
out in the country, good conditions, a challenge
recomended
Excellent Course- Great Staff
Vaaler Creek is a course I have been waiting to play. It did not disappoint! The turf conditions were superb. A few of the traps were needing care, but that could be due to hurricane Harvey's aftermath. The course presented many challenges that made the day!
Best north SA course for money
Kudos to the VC course staff for maintaining such good course conditions. Fairways and greens never disappoint. The only thing needing work is a couple of bunkers that are under repair. Good mix of hole variation will require you to play smart golf. The staff is always friendly and accommodating. Play it once and you’ll be back.
Vaaler Creek is a very good Hill Country track
Played Vaaler Creek from the tips, 6,864 yards and 73/140. Arrival is a little confusing. Lots of buildings visible from the parking lot and golf carts everywhere. The small ranch house behind the practice green is the pro shop. Staff is awesome. Carts are in great shape and have GPS. Then confusion again as to get to the 1st hole, you have to go out on a road until you come to a rock. A rock? In Hill Country? It's all rock. However, once there, the starter is visible and sets you right. The front nine plays different from the back nine. The front nine greens are interesting. I would say undulating but that is inaccurate. If it snowed here, they would be excellent for sledding they are so steep. Fun to guess what to do for a first time visit. Depending on the wind, long holes can play longer. The wide fairways are appreciated. Very little rough as the course bleeds right into the native habitat. Back nine has some very bold holes, specifically #10 and #18. I could add #17 too. Overall, outstanding course. Can't wait to play it again.
Hidden Gem
This course was amazing. Fairways were in great shape and the greens were nice too. Didn't know I booked a round after a tournament, so I ended up playing the front nine twice as I was a single and didn't want to wait behind the end of a scramble. We will definitely be back.
A Pierce ir heaven
This course was an excellent surprise. This was my first time playing and for the money I expected much less. The course was well-manicured, Greens rolled true, and even though not very long very challenging. You must keep it in the Fairway! I'll definitely be back again.
My favorite course
This course is so much fun to play, and being out In the country makes it so peaceful. The fairways are always kept up with. Green are perfect and fast. Would recommend golfing here to anyone.
Welcome to Texas
My family played this course as the Marriott that we are staying in for a conference wanted $299.00 per player for their guest rate on their courses. Vaaler was a much better deal, and I am sure we had just as good of a time. Although it was a fair distance from north San Antonio, it was a good southern style course, with interesting layouts and challenges. The parking lot is a little confusing, and there is not a good bag drop off area, but the staff was very nice and courteous. Overall, a quality course and a good value and a fun time!
Truly an amazing course and experience in the beautiful hill country.
I absolutely love this course. The club pro Andrew was extremely helpful and is a great asset to this course. I will be coming back several times and highly recommend this course. Definitely drive the 1-1.5 hours you will not regret it.
