ShadowGlen Golf Club
About
Located just 15 minutes northeast of downtown Austin, ShadowGlen Golf Course is considered by locals to be one of the area's hidden gems. At 7,174 yards from the back tees, it is a long, tough course that will test even the most seasoned players. Some consider it to be the most difficult public golf course in Texas. The layout has a links design that is mostly flat but there are a few hilly spots that can cause some trouble, especially the holes that were designed with steep drops. The narrow fairways require accuracy and the well manicured greens play fast and are often bordered by strategically placed bunkers or contoured mounding. There are also water hazards coming into play throughout, including the wandering creek that cuts across the golf course.

Wish there was a 150 marker
All of the markers on the sprinkler heads were gone and there was not a 150 marker or 100 marker? Better bring your distance finder.
Great course.
Quite a challenge! Beautiful course with beautiful wild flowers and great natural layout of trees orchards.
Cart Path Only
Some areas of course were very wet and cart path on those made sense. Others were dry enough to take cart out, at least into the rough. Lots of walking, I think this kept the crowd down, which was a plus.
Higher price, lesser quality. Major declines over the years
Short and sweet for everyone... I used to love this course because it was pristine at a somewhat reasonable price. While difficult, it was arguably the most well kept course in town. That was five years ago. Now and over the last few years, it has gone downhill. The greens are in shambles. The staff didn't inform, either over the phone or upon our arrival, that the course had issues (portions of holes being off-limits, all greens being either dead or with replacement squares of grass, and price increases). For $95 bucks, I cannot recommend. For $50, i'd still pass. You simply cannot track your handicap on this course at this time. I'll try again in another couple years when conditions improve. Tried to include a picture but not sure if it will work. perhaps try google or other review, can't be the only one who experienced this.
Sad state of affairs
Once one of my favorites, this place has fallen to pieces. When they came back from the precipice of failure 8 years ago, I was the biggest champion of this course. It’s a fun and flexible layout, used to have a chill vibe - with people that cared about the quality of the experience and the quality of service.
That’s all gone now.
If you do decide to book a tee time here, call - ask them which greens have grass on them. Even while they’re holding the phone they can use one hand to count.
Pace of Play was slow
Usually the pace of play is good at Shadow Glen, but not on Monday. Seemed like one group was holding up three other groups and nothing was done about it. The pace picked up on the last three holes, mainly because that other group finally finished. Guess they didn't know how to play ready golf.
I like the course overall, greens are not as good as I have seen them in the past, hopefully they will fill in with the warmer weather. At least it does look like work is being done to get the course into shape.
Absolute Dogtrack
This is a sad story of a course that literally came back to life almost a decade ago, became probably my favorite hidden gem in the Austin area and is now a complete waste of time.
We played on greens that had maybe 10% of the surface area actually covered with turf. When we asked the staff what happened it was “you know, Austin courses” Like, huh? We just finished playing three other courses this week that were pristine.
That same attitude carried to every aspect of service. Even down to your choice of beer.
Total dogtrack now. That’s a bummer, It has a great layout that makes you use a lot of different clubs and shots - it’s just that nobody around there cares anymore.
Sadly, crossing this one off the list permanently.
Your 2nd comment shows that you can’t get over the fact that we don’t carry Bud Light. Plenty of other courses that carry your favorite drink.
The course response to the review is completely indicative of what to expect.
3 greens? Yeah right. Try 12-13 that aren’t even fit for muni standards.
The beer? Explain the other 9 InBev and Constellation brand products being sold. None of the staff is even smart enough to understand what they’re “protesting”.
How about the cart paths that are completely crumbling apart? How about the fairways missing turf?
Be better if you want to charge $100 per round.
Sorry we did not have your favorite Anheuser Busch beer available. We did have 3 greens damaged in the winter freeze which are currently being resodded. We are confident that they will be back to normal real soon. Cheers!
Nice layout. Greens were rough. Pace a bit slow. I played right after lots of rain and course was flooded in places. Enjoyed the course overall.
Some interesting holes.
The greens were in poor condition - infested with an odd grass that caused the ball bounce and go off line.
Pace slow 4.5 hours due to a slow threesome and no ranger.
We have been treating the poa pretty aggressively and it is almost entirely gone now. After the harsh winter freezes, the bermuda went completely dormant and the poa was able to establish. Sorry that you had a poor experience. We would love to have you back again now that everything bounced back.
Terrible Greens
Greens are awful and not maintained. Over priced for the course conditions. Go to Star Ranch GC up the road for a better experience.
Nice Course - Greens Terrible
I liked the course. Nice layout and it was in good condition except the greens. Obviously the cold had killed most of them. Nothing but sand, mud and weeds. It will be a while before they can be recovered.
Good track; needs time to recover from weather
Really nice layout. Course has taken a beating from the rain and the inconsistent temperatures. Greens were a mess, but just needs a little time and warmth for the Poa Annua to die out and the Bermuda to recover.
Marshall
Played the Saturday before Easter and the staff was incredible besides their one marshall. I get that our group was slow but you do not need to threaten to kick us of the course for being a few minutes behind. Also if you are going to warn us don't yell from your cart while we are putting on the third green and then drive off before we can say anything. I would not be coming back if it wasn't for the other staff members being so great and the course being insanely fun. Side not that pizzas is INCREDIBLE.
Thank you for getting back to me. In reading other comments, it appears my review is reciprocated. It was $95 with a shared cart so I'm thinking $75 round + $20 per seat in the cart which also seems a bit hefty. Either way, cost well outweighed conditions, especially the greens.
We did have issues with 4 of our greens due to the unusually hard freezes over the winter. I'm sorry that you were not informed of the conditions. Our highest green fee is $79 and there were never portions of holes being off limits or entire greens being dead. After the recent rains and warm temps the course has recovered very quickly.
