Some argue that the tricked-up golf course has no place in today’s game, but they might change their mind after visiting the eclectic Old Brickyard. As the name implies, the course lays out in and around an old brickyard, featuring dramatic elevation changes, blind shots, and some unbelievable, almost impossible holes. This is one you’ll want to play just to say you’ve seen it.

The opening holes are pretty basic as you traverse northward before turning into the meat of the course, where the dramatic elevation changes start wreaking havoc on your club selection. After about the third or fourth hole, every hole seems to have some unique feature.

The Old Brickyard Lake comes into play on holes 9-11, some of the most difficult holes you’ll find anywhere. After you limp homeward suffering near-disasters on the tricky par 3 No. 8, which plays over water and seems to drop about 5 stories, and the demented 9th hole, which features a funky tee shot and challenging approach over water to a difficult green, No. 10 is not a welcome sight. Hole 10 plays from an elevated tee box, with water along the right. Water comes into play on the next two shots as well, since it cuts across the dogleg-right fairway. If you’re struggling, this is a double-digit hole for sure.

There’s no real break after No. 10, either. The 13th requires a precision short iron to a tiered green. More surprises await as you finish the round, so be prepared. The yard is a fun day of golf.

Getting there : Take I-45 south from Dallas to Ferris, then exit 267 and continue down the access road to the entrance on the right.

A fun challenge

Overall a nice and fun course. Weather it was the challenge in play or the go cart cart path with many curves and drop downs that had you yelling woohoo... it was truly an enjoyable day of golf. A lot of friendly people out playing and accommodating to other speed of play. Fast greens even after a rain Strom the night before.. this PGA tournament class course is definitely recommended..

Getting better

The course is on the rebound……greens are back and fairways are in good shape. There are a couple of bad tee boxes way better than the last time I played there

The greens

Of all the courses I’ve played locally, brickyards greens are in superb shape. It’s a pleasure playing on a course that takes care of the grounds!

Challenging track

The course is challenging with blind tee shots. Some tee boxes were in bad shape, but most were in good conditions. The course has several elevation changes making it very fun. I will definitely play there again.

Great greens

Old Brickyard in Ferris, TX, is a pleasant hilly course with plenty of difficult water hazards. The course is a little difficult to navigate from hole-to-hole, but the fairways and greens are very lush and full. If you look closely, you can see downtown Dallas from the tee box on hole 3.

Hot and Challenging...

Fun course that is worth the drive. Built out of an old brickyard quarry, about 4-5 holes are basically in the quarry -- up, down, up, down. Hole #10 is amazingly hard -- probably the hardest Par 5 I've played. Very scenic course but as mentioned by others, get ready from some blind tee shots. One thing I couldn't figure out --why the clubhouse makes it a point to answer the question "Do you want to leave a tip?" for credit card charges. Seriously? For checking in? Turn that option off please.

Good course - could use some improvements

Good course but could use some improvements. Overall, a good experience, even though there are some specific improvements that can be made. Pace of play was pretty bad and sometimes there were two or even three groups backed up on one tee box. Speaking of tee boxes they were pretty bad. Often times it was hard to find an area that didn’t have a divot or a flat ground to tee off from. Other than that, just little things like lack of water on the course and broken stairs down to the greens that could be fixed easily. I’ll still be going back again as a backup option.
