Royal Kunia Country Club boasts a reputation as one of the best and most scenic golf courses on Oahu. The course is perched high above the Ewa plain, offering panoramic views of the entire South Shore, stretching from Pearl Harbor to the downtown skyline of Honolulu to the famed Diamond Head. The layout rolls across a gently undulating landscape, offering a diverse layout of short par 4s and demanding par 5s. Water comes into play on a few holes and there are strategically placed bunkers throughout. Its coastal location guarantees that wind will be a factor in determining your outcome. The signature hole comes exactly midway through the course. Royal Kunia Country Club's par-5 ninth requires three strong shots that avoid the numerous troubles from tee to green including bunkers, trees, water, and of course, wind.

First Time Playing

The course was beautiful and well maintained but the putting greens were very challenging and sometimes unforgiving.

It was my first time after maybe a decade since I last played this course. Basically, its just my second time to play this course. I love the course because Its not too crowded and really well maintained. I want to come back really soon while I can still remember what I learned in playing the course. The greens were speedy and very challenging. Its also windy here so make sure you use the right club or else. You will really enjoy this course. God bless.

Course in great shape

Overall, this course is in darn good shape but there were a few issues that need to be brought out that seemed to have changed since the last time we played here.
For starters, when we drove in the parking lot, there was a sign pointing to the bag drop area that was directly in front of the cart attendants tent. We stopped at the sign and although there were four workers sitting and chatting right there, no one got off their butts to help us with our bags. I got out of my car, popped the trunk and carried our bags to the stand right in front of them. No one welcomed us, but instead, kept chatting among themselves. Personally, I didn't think that this portrayed a very good initial image of the staff's level of professionalism. Nuff on that.

The other issue is with the sand traps. I only got in two of them this day, but my wife got in several and between us both, we agreed that the bunkers need some attention as the sand seemed very hard and inconsistent in it's distribution throughout the various bunkers. I guess the way around this is to just NOT hit it in the traps, right?

In any case, the rest of the course looked great and I would definitely play here again. I just hope the management reads the reviews here and takes appropriate action.

This course was great to play with beautiful views as an added bonus!

Having played many of the courses on this island, I wasn't sure what to expect. Although the course lacks having a lavish club house, the check in couldn't have been easier. There was a nice selection of logo clothing offered as well as golf balls and gloves. The course is in great shape. The fairways are very manicured. Our only issue was the greens. They were very hard to read. That isn't the fault of the course.... we need to remember we are surrounded by the ocean!
We would recommend this course to all levels of golfers. We really enjoyed our round. The views were great!

views are unmatched

Great views of Oahu! People who don't play golf miss some of the most gorgeous views on this island! Course was primped up for a tourney the next day so greens were speedy! Downside to this course is the kamaaina prices for weekdays - ridiculous! So it's rare that we play there these days. But I guess that's a good thing - keeps course from being crowded.

Hidden Gem!

Played a ton of courses on the island and had to play this. Very surprised with course conditions. The greens were great. Fairways were well kept. But most of all the finishing holes on 9 and 18 are awesome to take on. Guarantee you'll return to play this one again--I am!

Not worth the money paid.

Course in acceptable conditions and friendly staff. However all other facilities are poor and terrible. The clubhouse is just a "cabin", the ugliest and worst clubhouse I have ever seen. No chances to have a beer after playing, the "restaurant" (if you can call it that way) was closed at 5 pm while players still on the course. Old carts, no complimentary tees in the cart, no GPS available even for rental. Not worth the money we paid. I do not recommend this course unless nothing else available and desperate for playing golf.

Over booked, Poor service

T time reserved for 1:30pm, ran out of carts due to over booking. Didnt get out til 2:00, then was told the carts need to be in by 6:00pm. Starter told us we can play front nine twice so that we can get 18 holes in. We agreed, made the turn back to 1st tee, but was met by a marshall, who told us that the flags have been pulled on the front nine and we need to play the back nine. Needless to say, we were backed up, waiting roughly 3-4 minutes to hit each shot. We were met by the marshall again on the 17th green, who told us that this was the last hole we're going to play. It was 6:10pm at this time with plenty of light left. We pleaded that all we needed was 10 more minutes to put in a complete round, but was denied. VERY POOR!!!!!

Great Views

Very nice course, but as other reviews have stated, that course can use some attention.

Greens were ok...........they rolled true but some were a bit bumpy, the rough was acceptable and fairways were were maintained. Bunkers needs some attention too.

Clubhouse was a joke with the snack shack closed and no beverage girl you had to fend for yourself. Bring your own drinks and you will be fine.

Friendly staff, great views. We would play there again.

the greens are in poor shape, bumpy and slow.

the staff is very friendly and helpfull. the course is in good condition from tee to green. the greens are not in good condition. they are slow and bumpy. where ever the pin was replaced, they were not very profesionally done. over all we had a good experiance and a fun time on the course. I would not go back till the greens are improved.

Fun course with excellent views

I had never heard anything about this course until our driver from HiGolfGuide recommended it. It happened to be one of the courses they provided free transportation to and since we didn't have a car it was perfect. Upon arrival I was a bit skeptical because of the makeshift clubhouse and restaurant area. But as soon as we got on the first tee it didn't matter one bit. The first thing you'll notice are the dirt red bunkers they have. They're maintained very nicely and are definitely unique. The greens were above average, not too fast but very smooth. The fairways were green and in pretty good shape too. It's a pretty straight forward course with a lot of bunkers and some water. Overall, my son and I thought it was very enjoyable to play. My favorite part about the course, besides the bunkers, would have to be the views of Pearl Harbor and the city below. The facilities aren't spectacular so don't expect a whole lot, but the course was nice enough for me. I'd definitely come back.

Feels Like a Private Club

We found this beautiful golf course, it's located high above the Ewa plains overlooking Pearl Harbor.
This course was built as a private club, and for many years had no activity because there was a dispute with the city of Honolulu over a $50 MM deposit required by a former mayor. That did not keep the members of the City Council from playing this course..

We met a very delightful lady in the pro shop named Sherry. She was friendly and gave us yardage books and bag tags,
and good advise.
The Marshall escorted us to the first tee and we felt as if we were members of a private club. We just about had the entire place to ourselves on a weekday morning.
The holes are easy to follow as they flow among the former sugar cane fields. Most holes have great views of the harbor,
the city, and the Ko'olau mountains.
They gave us bottled water and towels. There were ball washers on every teeing area. Distance markers are very clear and our yardage book really helped.
This was one of our favorite courses on Oahu.
The tees, greens, and fairways were manicured and pristine.
The course was a little dry, but that's a seasonal thing, as the Trades were not blowing all week.
The lack of play here at Royal Kunia is very surprising. They have a great price for locals, and there's a better local rate on Golf Now.
Comparing Royal Kunia to Kapolai or Ko Olina, Royal Kunia is a real bargain, and never slammed as those two are.

Golf course ok, don't expect anything else

Royal Kunia is a reasonably designed and laid out course. Unfortunately, when it was built, they quit before they were done.

There is essentially no club house attached to this course. They have a "temporary" shack which has been there for 10 years now. The restaurant probably will be open when you get done, but don't expect much. Check in staff are usually a little cold, but the starters are good people.

Driving range and putting green are located away from the area, so you need to get a cart to get there, but NOT the cart you will be using on the course, so you get to move your clubs twice. No GPS on carts, a towel probably won't be provided, but occasionally is, kind of luck of the draw or washing machine.

The course itself has some interesting holes. #1 starts out as a reasonable par 5, #2 is a nasty little par 4 with water and OB, then it settles down into some mid to average par 4's. #9 is a long par 5 with water at the green. #10 maybe the easiest par 5, then some par 4s with lots of fairway traps for protection. #18 is the last par 5, reachable by a long hitter, except the 2nd shot has to carry all the way to the green over water.

Maintenance is generally good, the greens are average for Oahu courses, generally a little bumpy, a little inconsistent in speed, but typical.

The bottom line though is that there are several other courses within an easy drive of this one with better amenities and typically the same or even lower rates.

Royal Kunia seems to pride itself in pricing that is at the top of the market without delivering top of the market product.
