Chapel Hill Country Club
The Good: Quirky "old school" layout just east of the Fox River has some redeeming qualities: Small, well-kept greens, some good, long Par 3's, and a 700-yard Par 5 to talk about at the 19th hole (which happens to double as the clubhouse). Several short, dogleg Par 4's that play more difficult than the yardage. Decent value at under $40 during weekend peak season.
The Bad: Course conditions are poor and the greens, while good, are too small for the average player. The former clubhouse is now abandoned and not utilized, replaced by the 19th hole trailer. No driving range or on-course restrooms. No GPS and not many yardage markers. Limited service with no starter or ranger. The Par 5 17th is more of a design flaw than even a gimmick.
The Verdict: You get what you pay for at Chapel Hill CC. There are many other courses in the area for a just a few more bucks - you'd be better served playing them.
Best Hole: Not too many holes aren't quirky, but the short Par 5 9th is a very good hole. Drive must avoid a creek and approach to a small green covered by sand.
Needs Work
This course is fine to get a quick round in from my location. A number of the greens had dead patches and the fairways haven't seen water since it rained last from what I could tell. Staff is friendly but course is poor,.
signature holes
from teeing off the first hole to last. large bunkers in front of some greens to elevated greens. just a pleasant place to play a round of golf!
review of chapel hill
Course is fine greens are small course is not marked very well
Course in great shape...been here many years ago
Used tot play this course 3 days a week about 7 years ago when lived in area, I have not played in 4 years where I used to play then maybe 10 times over summer...course is runned by GolfVision now...speaking to staff members there..and the course is in great shape...the greens are plush cushiony and the fairways excellent...a few of the tee boxes need some work, but all in all from what I saw and heard they have come a long way....I would wish it was closer to me I would play 3/4 per week again
Greens very good; Great Value
Great value. Course in very nice condition. Greens were very good. People on the course friendliest anywhere, same for the staff. Not crowded at 1pm start. Very enjoyable; wanted to go more than 18; usually want to stop sooner than 18. 19th hole special was grilled fresh and the French fries were very good. We loved it.
Good Fun
There are a couple of blind shots leaving the potential for lost balls. Ball control is a must on the dog legs.
Nice Old Course
Chapel Hill is another example of a nice, old course. While it lacks many of the little amenities, the tees, greens and fairways are in good shape. Like many older courses, the fairways are narrower than newer courses and lined with majestic oaks and hickories. Some of the green are a little small, but that is part of the challenge of this course. Located along the Fox River, there is very little in the way of water hazards, but plenty of sand traps. I am looking into our church group of golfers playing a round there during the week. We had an enjoyable round of golf and will go again.
Nice course
A little pricey for what you get but, over all nice course. Long par three and long par five on 17 makes it interesting.
Horrible
3 hours for the front 9?!?!?
No ranger. Free for all. Aweful waste of time.
Small Greens / Strong starting holes
Chapel Hill is a mature enjoyable course with very small green complexes and large trees. With no warm up range the course plays fairly difficult out of the box with three 400 yard give or take par 4's and then an almost 200 yard par 3. After that the course plays fairly easy with the exception of the 600 plus yard 17th hole which always requires three well struck shots to reach the dance floor. Course was in decent shape (fairways need work and the trees really need to be trimmed....they are trimmed by golf cart roofs driving under them!!) Extremely small greens....which over the years have gotten smaller and smaller. Main clubhouse closed and halfway house now serves as clubhouse. A good value for anything under $30. 3.5 stars and was not crowded on a Saturday at all!!
Great Value on Hot Deal!!
Getting to play this course for $19.00 on a hot deal was a great value. Now, the course isnt a 5-star resort course but is well cared for and getting better. Chapel Hill is one of the better courses in the McHenry/Johnsburg area. The par-5 605 yd 17th is a monster.
easy for new golfers,
I've played here many times, great course, fun to play
Mature course with some fun holes requiring different shots.
Very slow play, well over 5 hours. Hard to tell difference in fairways and rough. Usaully fairways are cut for the weekend. Greens were in pretty good shape. Very few amenities. "Clubhouse" was in 19th hole. No starter.
old course, not too well maintained, nice small greens
The course has short par 4s, long par 3s and one short long par 5 (17th). The course was not well maintained, but the green was pretty nice. Typical old public golf course. I got a really nice deal on Sunday afternoon and I finished in 3 hours. For the price I paid, I would play the course again.
Great greens!
Nice old course. The maintanace staff were very aware of the golfer and moved or quieted their machines when needed.
The greens are even and true. Not too fast but maybe a little too firm. They may be in need of more water
We would definitely play it again.Perhaps if it got more play more attention could be given to the upkeep. We played on a Monday morning and it was wide open.We played at a good pace and finished in @ 31/2 hours. We also got this on aHOT DEAL so it was good all around.WINNING!
Lots of water and "blind" shots, challenging to say the least.
Only being a golfer for about 6 years, I've managed to Golf at about 100 courses, and this one definitely made it in my "Top 10". Love the rolling terrain, and the "Pete Dye" kinda' Blind Greens. Bring your "A" Game, and think about your shots...risk reward ratio is high...both ways...you can go for it...and totally screw-up...like I did on about 6 holes...or you can make that shot that keeps you "comin' back"...like mine where I hit a drive way right...20 yards behind about 12 trees situated in such a way that they revealed four 6-foot windows...I coulda' safely went left of all the trees and landed in the fairway...but that furthest right window gave me a clear view of the flag 185 yards out...can I pull-off a "Michelson"?...Let's try this 3-Hybrid...Bam!...straightest shot of my life...6-feet from the pin...for birdie...ooops...2-putt for par...not too shabby...I'll be back...and I already told 10 golf buddies.
