Could be Great but Good Course
The staff was great. The layout is good. The course was in good shape overall but 5 greens were very best up with ball marks. Two so bad we made them automatic 2 putts. The Pace I’d Play was 4:50 for a 9 am start. That is unacceptable . Likely to come back.
Good course
Great shape - good challenge - wish it was closer to home - I always enjoy this layout - first time this year and I will definitely be back
Great course in really good condition. A few ball marks on the greens were the only flaw in condition, but not too bad for a public course. Very pretty, unique holes. Well bunkered approach shots and some tough pin positions. You'll use every club in the bag and should try to come in from the correct side of the fairway to avoid some of those bunkers. It was a 45 minute drive, but well worth it.
Wonderful Layout - still 3.5 stars
See my 8/25/18 and 8/27/17 reviews. Overall course is in much better shape than it was last year. Sand traps were maintained but all the rains many contained puddles and do not drain well. Once they dry out they'll probably be sketchy bottoms that won't have any sand in the them (just dirt). And most players don't rake them or even attempt to rake them properly. The greens can be very challenging for the weekend warrior novices and several feature some pretty extreme contours. Greens were speedy but pockmarked by old ball marks some repaired properly and some not. Extremely wet as well to the point where overweight hackers wearing soft spikes left footprint indentations all over the place. Repaired over 40 obvious ball marks that were not my own.....you are constantly cleaning up after others - sand trap debris/pebbles or ball mark turf. Foxford is a wonderful scenic and challenging layout if golfers would actually take care of this place. Would be fun to play more often except you have to gird yourself for JB Holmes INCREDIBLY SLOW PLAY. You can never ever get a flow going. Yesterday the group in front of us wouldn't be done teeing off until the group in front of them was halfway through putting on the next green. The tee sheet wasn't really completely full - as usual the back nine turned into a frustrating sit around and wait turtle crawl. A FIVE HOUR PLUS round is completely normal here. A full star and a half downgrade. 3.5 stars. Foxford could easily be four star plus (others seem to really overrate this place - I guess they embrace slow play & sloppy non caring golfers who do absolutely nothing to maintain it for following groups) - full range/practice areas/bathrooms on course and even a lone shower post round if needed. Decent clubhouse with no view of the course. Pleasant frequent nurse service was provided. $40 value. Recommend for the layout and overall challenge but only play if the tee sheet is light or you're one of first ones off at crack of dawn.
Great course
Love the layout. Challenging holes and beautifully set up. Number 2 hits you fast as probably the hardest par 5 around . So many great holes. Number 15... if you get it good off the tee, there’s a good chance to get there in 2 and it’s always fun to try. Good par 3’s too. Only slight would be that the finishing hole is a bit lame... but still challenging
A True Hidden Gem
I’ve lived in the area for four years, but never played Foxford Hills before. That will change for sure after playing it today. The course is a beautiful design through mainly tree-lined fairways. The rolling fairways with plenty of bunkers provide scenic views on every hole. The course is in amazing shape, with the only slight blemish being a few bunkers that are a bit stoney and could use a little more sand. The recent heavy rains may have been the main cause for that issue. Otherwise, the course is as good as any public course you will play in Illinois or Wisconsin. Lots of raised greens that are well bunkered will challenge you to hit the correct distance to get on the green. You won’t be disappointed playing this course!
Loooong round
As the title would suggest the round took much longer than the time the starter says. It took.....(drum roll) 5hrs 10mins. Look, I get it if there are players that are new to the game. We’ve ALL been there, but c’mon. The only ranger that I saw the entire round was the starter. Sure it was a Sun, and a beautiful one at that, but the course should be on top of the usual Sun problems. I would STILL recommend this course any time!! I hope Foxford will try and help out with the frustration that us more experienced hackers feel with this kind of situation arises.
great day
Perfect weather, great course, slow play but it was nice to have dry and sunny weather for a change.
