An upgraded old favorite
Designed by Ron Garl, Continental CC is a hidden gem. It fell into a tired and overgrown old course over the years, one that I had abandoned as a choice. Well, that has all changed in the last few years now capped off by a redo of the greens. But, that is only part of the story. They have also cleared out much of the underbrush and trimmed the vast collection of established old trees and turned it into an attractive parkland course. It is attractive and playable.
Is it perfect? Heck no. But they are clearly focused on making it better without breaking the bank. They probably opened the course a month or two too early so the greens do not appear perfect. They sure are rolling well however. They had just overseeded the fairways and it was rough only throughout. Not my favorite and I would have avoided the course had I known. But, the course is fairly flat and we made it work.
With all that said, we had a beautiful day compliments of FL's weather. If you want to have a nice dinner afterward, try their restaurant but MAKE a Reservation or you won't be able to get in.
The course was in great shape the greens are in really good shape
New Greens are great
Redid all the greens and recently reopened after 3 months of work
Greens run smooth and fast. Mature Florida course w huge nose covered oaks. 70% of the fairways are narrower than typical Florida course so adds some challenge. Course terrain is relatively flat is only draw back.
Renovated
This course re-opened a while ago. It is in fantastic shape!
Not impressed with the new greens
I have played at Continental many times before and always enjoyed it. They were having issues with some of the greens as they were not in good shape. I was excited to play there again after the greens had been redone. After the first few holes, I began to wonder what exactly was done to the greens. Some of the greens looked good, but most of them had some dark brown spots and some didn’t look much better than they did before. Holes 15, 16 and 17 seemed to have the same problems prior to the rework. Hole 17 has a big sandy spot exactly as it had previously. Even the putting green had browns spots and sand in places. I didn’t notice any reshaping of any greens as I was expecting to see. The fairways and tee boxes were in nice shape, but you would expect that with no traffic for 4 months.
The day I played they had the same flags on every hole so you had no idea where the hole was on the green. None of the rangers could explain why. We had to guess the distance to the pin when we got close.
I am also disappointed with the new range ball setup. I am happy they put that new machine in, but now you get half the quantity of balls for the same price as before. That equals double the price. The new higher greens fees do not match up with the condition of the course right now.
I really hope the greens get better because I really like playing there.
Maybe I was expecting too much? I would like to know what other people think.
Continental CC
If your looking for a really nice golf course just outside the Villages then Continental is your place. The course has just been reopen after extensive course Renovations. The course has a brand new putting green and chipping area. Continental is located just west of Morse BLVd on state road 44. If you have any question call and ask for Steve Which is the course Pro. They also just added a ball dispenser located right next to the driving range. No longer need to go to the pro shop to get balls. Do yourself a favor and bring your foursome and give Continental a try, you and your friends won’t be disappointed. Scott
Pace of play course expectations, greens, fairways
We played as a foursome and finished our 18 hole round in 4 hours and 15 minutes. During our round, the course ranger told us we were playing too slow and said we needed to speed it up. We thought our time to finish the round was extremely reasonable and well within most golf courses expectations. The course rangers need to take into consideration that other groups were playing much shorter tees before judging the speed of groups playing longer tees. Greens are new and were very nice. The fairway is lacking in adequate grass growth. In some areas the fairway is cut so short it is like playing off dirt.
Reopening 10/3/22!
This is more of a celebratory PSA than a review. We've had lots of fun in this course in the past and was heading up there to play when we found out they'd be closed for a few months. Spoke to the Pro Shop today and was informed that they'll be open on Monday 10/3/22! Can't wait to get out there again - hasn't disappointed before and with the greens redone I can see nothing but fun coming up!
The course will be closed for the next 3 months so that they can redo all the greens which will make this course a lot of fun to play
The course will be closed for the next 3 months for improvements
Great course if they fixed the greens
Love the course. Fairways ok along with Tee boxes. Bunkers best shape of any around. If they would fix the greens. Terrible shape
Keep Improving
I've seen this course change over 40 plus years. The new changes and improvements are very nice. Keep doing what your doing. You have a hidden gem there!
Great value
Overall conditions were good. Course closing soon for replacement of greens. Needed on many holes
