Classic Golf Club
About
The Classic Golf Club in Spanaway sprawls across rolling hills blanketed with towering Douglas firs. Located just 30 minutes south of Tacoma, it is one of the area's hidden gems, offering not only a beautiful natural setting but also a challenging round. The layout features elevated greens, tree-lined fairways, and ponds and wetlands that come into play on several holes. The greens are the most challenging element of the golf course. Some are small, which is tough enough to maneuver as it is, and most are framed by mounding. Sand bunkers also provide contrast against the smooth and fast-rolling greens. The Classic is a challenging course but still playable for all skill levels.

No tree's just stumps
too many tree's gone. That picture that golf now has on it's website is false advertisement. I used to love that course. Im glad i only paid 22 bucks cause if it was more i would have left. I could not warm up, the people in the proshop didn't want to fix ball machine so that i could give them more money. the greens were very inconsistent. It's not worth time/money/gas.
Course Could be great but.........
Must be the time of year but the fairways were dry even though the have been irrigating. For an out of town person the most disappointing part was the rental clubs. They provided me a set of 10 year old Titlest clubs. Greens were in good shape. Also they have cut down so many trees between the fairways that the tree don't come into play on most holes, another disappointment.
great condition
Fairways and greens were in excellent condition. With the number of trees that were removed, the course was more forgiving. Enjoyed the round.
Fun course from blues.
Other than being treated like I didn't belong there, it was a pretty good day. We got there 10 minutes before our 6:30 AM tee time, and rather than trying to get us out on the course, the guy in the pro shop, thought it would be better to try and bash me for my debit card being declined. (When I checked my acct balance, I noticed that my info was stolen and all of my cards were maxed out!) Of course at 6:30 AM, there's no way for me to know that, especially on a Sunday when the banks are closed...
I returned after our round, just to kinda rub my 76 in his face a lil, but, he was nowhere to be found.
I wouldn't let one person decide how I like the course though. I've played here a few times, and, although Ryan (Moore) is taking the trees out and making his courses less difficult, it's still a challenging and fun course. I'll play from the tips next time around, maybe even ask the shop guy if he wants to wager a lil bit. ;)
Poor pace of play
I thought I got a good deal through the golf now web site, but the pace of play was probably the slowest round I've ever played. After 4 hours I couldn't take it any more and left after playing only 13 holes. The course was un-marshalled and there was a group of 6 golfers playing in front of us that had at least a 2 hole gap in front of them of no golfers after 9 holes. On top of that we were playing in 90+ degree heat with no access to water and no beverage cart service.
Different Look
The course plays different now as they took out 1800 trees. The greens were in very good shape overall and the fairways were also good. In the past, fairways had wet spots, but now that they cleared a bunch of trees, more light is getting to the fairways and greens and it also allows more forgiveness on shots that are wide of the fairway.
Huge potential
A pretty fun clurse that i thi k could be a great course in the future. They recently cut down a bunch of trees, so there were large piles of mulch everywhere and ground under repair. If these areas were cleaned up it sould greatly increase the visual appeal of the course.
Otherwise I loved he set up and layout of the course. Def technical, not too long. It was pretty dried out, which if the course was watered a bit better it would have made it look much better and improved the condition of play.
I'll play again, but would like to see some better watering, ground cleanup etc
lots of machinery and construction
The course as all way was nice and challenging. But they are doing tons of work around the course. Tree removal and grinding. Lots if noise and distractions. We still had a nice round. I would definitely return again.
Typical Experience
I've played here twice now and both times have been fantastic. The pace was good, the staff was friendly, and the course was immaculate.
course
Tee boxes need a lot of attention. The rest of the course was in good shape.
Bring back the trees
Now It's just another course. Lost are the narrow fairways making course management critical. Lost is the feeling of being by yourself on each hole.
Course is in pretty good condition (could use some sand in the traps) but it is truly ugly with the torn up remnants of trees and trunks lining the fairways. I don't know if I will be back with those inflated prices either.
Good course
The classic is a nice course, with fun challenging/frustrating greens. they have recently removed some trees which makes it not as tough and narrow as it once was. Once the left over tree scraps are removed and maybe some flowers or something is put in its place it'll be a 5 star course.
I'd recommend it especially for the price I got my round on the golf now app.
One other thing that could be improved is the signage at the beginning of holes and pointing to the next hole.
Slowest round ever and course is a mess
If you want to play a 6hr round with no Marshall controlling anything plus to top it off trees cut down with nothing cleaned up come here!!
Recovering
I only played this course a 2nd time after the tree removal project. Never saw the course before. I like how it looks with less trees. But everything has not been removed or cleared out yet. So there are areas that are in bad shape from trees laying on them and the vehicle damage from the project. I'm sure it will look great after its cleared out and there is no effect from the improvements they did. RMG did same thing at McCormick Woods only they took twice as many trees out. Both lay outs look brighter and give a feeling of openness. The greens were in good shape and are tricky.
Could be a nice course...
in 2016.... Obviously making some big changes to the course with a long way to go. Need to clean up the trees, repair the tee boxes and water hazards. The greens will need some attention. The golf carts were a joke... very old, holes in the first one I tried and duct tape on the second for the bag cover. The guys in the clubhouse were "putting in their time"... certainly not there to help get me back next time. Left thinking this could be a great place down the road with some good management but I wouldn't bet on it...
CLEAN THIS PLACE UP!
This is not a well-managed course. Play should not suffer due to eyesores and like MANY piles of tree limbs and ugly stumps. The fairway and greens played excellent, but this course needs a makeover.
Water hazards with tarps showing, ground-up asphalt on the unkempt cart paths (they need repaving in many spots) and THE DEBRIS!!! I gave a two-star overall because the staff are working with what they have due to a windstorm. If this was my business I would do the responsible thing and close it until all of the many problem areas were presentable to all of my guests.
Logged Classic
The Classic is one of my favorite tracks. Very challenging from the blues with firm fast and undulating greens. It is a totally different look now that they have removed 1200 trees. Some debris is still on the course and there are tracks from heavy equipment across many fairways. Probably be pretty decent by the end of the summer.
Great shot values
Cool green complexes. Shots into the greens interesting due to the variety on pin placement possibilities . Can see how this course could devlop a player of Ryan Moore"s ilk. Highly recommend this track.
Saturday play was fast
Had a fun round on Saturday. Played with three new friends and had a blast. They have opened up the course to bring in the light but haven't taken away the difficulty
