Whispering Firs Golf Club

About
Whispering Firs Golf Club is one of two courses operated by Joint Base Lewis McChord. The other course, Eagles Pride, is located southwest of Whispering Firs. Designed by Bob Baldock in 1962, Whispering Firs opened on what was then McChord Air Force Base and later became part of Joint Base Lewis McChord. Though it's a military golf course, it's open to the public but don't forget to check in with security at the visitor's center. The layout features well manicured fairways lined with mature trees and challenging rough. The small greens demand accuracy and are made even more difficult with strategically placed bunkers framing the edges. There are some tough doglegs that require conservative play, and water hazards come into play as well. Whispering Firs Golf Club will test a variety of skills but it's not an overly punishing course. Players of all skill levels will be able to enjoy a round here.

Course Conditions/Maintenance
The course is a great layout and makes even the professional player plot his way around. However, what was once a hidden gem of a track that only those with access can reach has now become an afterthought. Bunkers are in need of SERIOUS maintenance as well as the areas around most greens. The consistency of the bunkers have become that of a cart path at this point and should be the first issue addressed by the GM and his greens crew. The second would be to probably take a look at the equipment blades and see if there is an issue. What would once be an either penalizing lie, or one to hit a beautiful nipper off of have become nothing but mud, divots, and weed overgrowth. I’m sure with the amount of money in the DoD budget for MWR facilities, the GM and his crew could probably shut down the facility for at minimum 30 days and address these issues rather than sit on their laurels and work 1/2 the day at nearby Eagles Pride (also in need of some serious upkeep. Hello BlackBerry Bushes). Also the driving range… stick to the range mats. Theres just no grass left on the range to hit off of, or perhaps maybe a few signs of how to take proper divot patterns would be a nice touch. Maybe see if nearby Meadow Park would sell you some range balls as well. I hope this gets mentioned and the course can be restored to its former glory, or perhaps maybe they need a new direction of leadership.
Whispering Firs
Fun course to play. The course is in great shape with some challenging holes. The restaurant food is outstanding.
Perfect
Beautiful day, course in good condition. Fun with friends
Nice Course, Easy Play
Nice Course, well maintained. A little bit of slow play but expected during these summer months. Open enough to make course easy with some holes a bit more challenging with trees.
I wasn’t able to make it through security, called asking for compensation but they said there’s nothing they can do. Said they wouldn’t leave a promo code in my email, but I got nothing.
Just OK
Challenging course, lots of trees but ok overall. Lots of dry grass Hard pan fairways, bunkers were awful just hard compacted dirt no sand at all!
Soggy in a drought
Love the challenging course. Lots of long par 4s, and the greens were GREEN. They had so much water on them that the fringes were soggy. Took a few holes to adjust to how slow the greens were. Overall if this wasn’t on a US airbase it would be packed. Be aware you need to have an enhanced ID and a reservation to get on base, but worth it.
Great value
Course was in good shape, traps could have been refreshed a bit, nice practice green, tee boxes well maintained and greens where good.
Would be nice if they had a white/gold combo. There is a big difference between the white and gold standing alone. Something like a 5800-5900 white /gold combo would be a very nice addition.
Lots of dog legs and big fir trees, need to keep it straight off the tee.
Fun round
Great course for the price; wish the snack bar would stay open past 4p on weekends...or had cold water source to refill bottles on hot day of walking. Not high end course, so got behind slow 4some (very slow, no knowledge of golf) that backed us up and no marshall to move them along. I like the lay out, needs more watering but greens were in good shape and enjoyed the course.
