About
The Classic Golf Club in Spanaway sprawls across rolling hills blanketed with towering Douglas firs. Located just 30 minutes south of Tacoma, it is one of the area's hidden gems, offering not only a beautiful natural setting but also a challenging round. The layout features elevated greens, tree-lined fairways, and ponds and wetlands that come into play on several holes. The greens are the most challenging element of the golf course. Some are small, which is tough enough to maneuver as it is, and most are framed by mounding. Sand bunkers also provide contrast against the smooth and fast-rolling greens. The Classic is a challenging course but still playable for all skill levels.

Golfer Reviews
CLEAN THIS PLACE UP!
This is not a well-managed course. Play should not suffer due to eyesores and like MANY piles of tree limbs and ugly stumps. The fairway and greens played excellent, but this course needs a makeover.
Water hazards with tarps showing, ground-up asphalt on the unkempt cart paths (they need repaving in many spots) and THE DEBRIS!!! I gave a two-star overall because the staff are working with what they have due to a windstorm. If this was my business I would do the responsible thing and close it until all of the many problem areas were presentable to all of my guests.
Logged Classic
The Classic is one of my favorite tracks. Very challenging from the blues with firm fast and undulating greens. It is a totally different look now that they have removed 1200 trees. Some debris is still on the course and there are tracks from heavy equipment across many fairways. Probably be pretty decent by the end of the summer.
Great shot values
Cool green complexes. Shots into the greens interesting due to the variety on pin placement possibilities . Can see how this course could devlop a player of Ryan Moore"s ilk. Highly recommend this track.
Saturday play was fast
Had a fun round on Saturday. Played with three new friends and had a blast. They have opened up the course to bring in the light but haven't taken away the difficulty
The New Classic
They have cut down a lot of trees on this course since I played here a couple of months ago. It changed the look and the feel of the golf course. One of the things I liked about the course before was the feeling that every hole was indeed only your hole and you didn't see other golfers on other holes. It has now opened the course up and has significantly changed the feeling and also has made a lot of holes play easier. I believe they have drastically reduced the challenge as well as the esthetic pleasure the course once offered. The course was in good shape albeit very slow greens.
Played like it was May 15th
Other than all the tree limbs that they have scatter through out the rough from the course clearing, the course is in remarkable shape. The greens were a little furry But I can't wait until this summer, could be one of WA best courses.
Always a great day!
This course is always in great shape and the staff is always friendly. They have a nice driving range for warm up/practice and one of the few courses that offer a chipping green.
One of the fun parts of this course is if you dont keep it in the fairway you will be punished! Not a level lie any time I went off the short grass- so challanging and fun!
Another thing is, it was January when we played and the bunkers were in the best shape of any course I play this time of year!
Go play the Classic and you'll be happy you did!
Golf classic
The course was in really nice shape for the season a little soupy in spots and the greens were slow but I'll probably be able to give a better review in the summer over all it was a pleasant experience . Ty
A Classic Round of Golf
We played the course from the Blue Tees which was about 6300 yards and it played long no roll in the fairway. That being said it was a great round, the greens were in good shape , the course dry in most of the landing areas. For the price $30 with a cart you cannot go wrong.... We notice during the round that there are a number of trees marked for removal which will change the complexion of this course. I think this is going to be a gem of a course to play in 2015!!!
well maintained
Conditions were great even though there were recent storms. very fast pace of play . prolly due to the fact there was a seahawks game on .Had great weather after the fog cleared and will come back in the spring /summer when my swing comes back around and I can keep it out of the trees LOL.
greens!!!
the greens were amazing for this time of year. dress the courses in pretty good condition me and my friends enjoyed it.
Challenging but fun course to play
There isn't a green on the course that doesn't present a challenge to read, and the fairways are tight with little room for error, but it is very walkable and a fun course to play
Solid Golf Course with Great Value
First time playing the golf course...and I was impressed with the layout and the challenge of it all. For late fall conditions, the course was in pretty good shape. Beautiful, tree lined fairways with nicely contoured greens. Some of the bunkers need some more sand in them, a little thin, but nicely shaped. For the value, the experience was very tough to beat. I will come back and play again, for sure. And Joe in the Pro Shop did a great job getting me out there, no hassles, a very nice and smooth experience. I feel they have a nice gem out there in Spanaway.
Tight, tree lined fairways
Can get be water build up in places after rains, ie soggy, plugged balls. Tough but fair. Bunkers not very playable after rains either.
Beautiful day, great layout
The Classic, while a little out of the way is worth the 1 hour drive from Kirkland,WA. This course offers a good challenge with some narrow fairways, a number of dogleg holes and green complexes unique to each hole. You'll want to be long and straight off the tee to score well. The setting was quiet very enjoyable, with the course in nice shape. It is a course that is easy to walk, with sort distances between holes and small elevation changes.
Friendly staff and good food from their small clubhouse and kitchen. Nice job Ryan Moore Group!
A gem of a course!
Every time I play here, I've have a great time! Looks like they punched the greens a few weeks ago so only a little bumpy, but birdies can be had. I love the challenging and varied greens and the elevated ones ads flavor to the course. Fairways were green, perfect balance of trees, a few water hazards, quiet (no cars or planes or power lines). I played from tips (6900 yds) and it did challenge me to use the driver more than I would from blues. Great for all skill levels, but beginners will struggle. Walking is no problem at The Classic, just the way I like to play. Course is forgiving when hit into trees and punching out, but you won't score well! I must say that the crew did a great job on the bunker, which are more unique than most. Truly is a great course and my pick to play in Tacoma. This is a relaxing, casual place to play without the attitude of the bigger named courses. Staff was friendly. There are even 2 putting greens and driving range. I highly recommend The Classic!
Fun and interesting
This course was really good fun. Not a long course, but requires that you place the ball in a good location. Some large undulating greens, lots of trees, traps and water. Some greens are protected by depressions, which are difficult to get out of and must be avoided. My new favorite course!
Played after aeration
I played after the greens were aerated-- so got a really great deal. So much so that when the golfnow reservation said I had a cart included, the pro shop was surprised. (He agreed to give me a cart, but he may send an angry email to golfnow).
Course was burnt out around the rough area, but fairways were in decent shape. A really tight course with lots of doglegs.
May have been due to aeration, but restaurant was closed.
Target golf at its finest
For the money, this was easily one of the finest courses I've played in Western Washington.
The course was in excellent shape and it's a beautiful layout. But, if you play, you better bring your A game. The fairways are really tight and the greens have odd shapes which force you to play target golf. The speed of the greens are also some of the fastest I've ever played. Don't leave your approach shots above the hole or you could easily be looking at a 3-putt.
For 10 handicaps and above, I would definitely recommend playing from the white tees. If you want a chance of scoring well at Classic, leave the driver in your bag and hit long iron off the tee.
Overall, an exceptional golf challenge. I wish I lived closer to the course so I could join the RMG club.
