Classic Golf Club
About
The Classic Golf Club in Spanaway sprawls across rolling hills blanketed with towering Douglas firs. Located just 30 minutes south of Tacoma, it is one of the area's hidden gems, offering not only a beautiful natural setting but also a challenging round. The layout features elevated greens, tree-lined fairways, and ponds and wetlands that come into play on several holes. The greens are the most challenging element of the golf course. Some are small, which is tough enough to maneuver as it is, and most are framed by mounding. Sand bunkers also provide contrast against the smooth and fast-rolling greens. The Classic is a challenging course but still playable for all skill levels.

Solid Golf Course with Great Value
First time playing the golf course...and I was impressed with the layout and the challenge of it all. For late fall conditions, the course was in pretty good shape. Beautiful, tree lined fairways with nicely contoured greens. Some of the bunkers need some more sand in them, a little thin, but nicely shaped. For the value, the experience was very tough to beat. I will come back and play again, for sure. And Joe in the Pro Shop did a great job getting me out there, no hassles, a very nice and smooth experience. I feel they have a nice gem out there in Spanaway.
Tight, tree lined fairways
Can get be water build up in places after rains, ie soggy, plugged balls. Tough but fair. Bunkers not very playable after rains either.
Beautiful day, great layout
The Classic, while a little out of the way is worth the 1 hour drive from Kirkland,WA. This course offers a good challenge with some narrow fairways, a number of dogleg holes and green complexes unique to each hole. You'll want to be long and straight off the tee to score well. The setting was quiet very enjoyable, with the course in nice shape. It is a course that is easy to walk, with sort distances between holes and small elevation changes.
Friendly staff and good food from their small clubhouse and kitchen. Nice job Ryan Moore Group!
A gem of a course!
Every time I play here, I've have a great time! Looks like they punched the greens a few weeks ago so only a little bumpy, but birdies can be had. I love the challenging and varied greens and the elevated ones ads flavor to the course. Fairways were green, perfect balance of trees, a few water hazards, quiet (no cars or planes or power lines). I played from tips (6900 yds) and it did challenge me to use the driver more than I would from blues. Great for all skill levels, but beginners will struggle. Walking is no problem at The Classic, just the way I like to play. Course is forgiving when hit into trees and punching out, but you won't score well! I must say that the crew did a great job on the bunker, which are more unique than most. Truly is a great course and my pick to play in Tacoma. This is a relaxing, casual place to play without the attitude of the bigger named courses. Staff was friendly. There are even 2 putting greens and driving range. I highly recommend The Classic!
Fun and interesting
This course was really good fun. Not a long course, but requires that you place the ball in a good location. Some large undulating greens, lots of trees, traps and water. Some greens are protected by depressions, which are difficult to get out of and must be avoided. My new favorite course!
Played after aeration
I played after the greens were aerated-- so got a really great deal. So much so that when the golfnow reservation said I had a cart included, the pro shop was surprised. (He agreed to give me a cart, but he may send an angry email to golfnow).
Course was burnt out around the rough area, but fairways were in decent shape. A really tight course with lots of doglegs.
May have been due to aeration, but restaurant was closed.
Target golf at its finest
For the money, this was easily one of the finest courses I've played in Western Washington.
The course was in excellent shape and it's a beautiful layout. But, if you play, you better bring your A game. The fairways are really tight and the greens have odd shapes which force you to play target golf. The speed of the greens are also some of the fastest I've ever played. Don't leave your approach shots above the hole or you could easily be looking at a 3-putt.
For 10 handicaps and above, I would definitely recommend playing from the white tees. If you want a chance of scoring well at Classic, leave the driver in your bag and hit long iron off the tee.
Overall, an exceptional golf challenge. I wish I lived closer to the course so I could join the RMG club.
dfinan,
Thank you for the review! We truly appreciate your comments and agree that The Classic is a true test of golf. We look forward to having you out here again soon!

Alright...not that great
This is about my 8th or 9th time playing this course. We get here about once a year and I often wonder why. All my buddies like it well enough but I never have liked the thin layer of sand in the bunkers, the really bumpy and fast/slow (Inconsistent) greens and un-inspiring holes. I was kind of excited to play this round as it is the 1st I had under the knowledge of it being under RMG management. I guess I had expectations that were not met. I hope that does not happen on our next trip to McCormick Woods. (Which I have in my top 5 Western Washington courses for amount of fun holes to play.)
rockinrod67,
Sorry you did not fully enjoy your time out here. We are always striving to do better and improve course conditions as we need. We are working on our bunkers currently and with the long stretch of warm weather we tried to stay on top of our watering by hand watering some of our greens on a day to day basis. This watering will affect the pace and consistency of them at times. We do appreciate your comments and will take them all into consideration. We hope you come see us again and hope you enjoyed your round at McCormick Woods.

Classic
The course was in pretty good condition and the staff was very friendly. Course was a bit challenging with some narrow tee box into fairway spots and a lot of hazards. Fun for my son and I.
classic reviews
the overall condition of course was fine the greens are spotty and not consistent. I also fell you can use the driver very much because of no room of the T
Great layout, green fairway and roughs
Very challenging course, had lots of playing the course , very friendly RMG members I played with.
Great value!
The Classic and Lake Spanaway nearby are two of the best golf values in the state and they're only a few miles apart. The range and the balls were a little shaggy, but useful enough to get stretched out with (I'd never practice there). There's not started on the course, apparently, during the week and no marshal, so our twosome easily caught up to two different fivesomes. It was fine and we just played through, but then we caught a single that was playing multiple balls, and that was kind of a pain and was the only real "glitch" of the day because he was all over the place and never seemed to be out of range until the eighth hold (par 3) where he had no choice but to let us through. For a casual round at less than 20 bucks on a beautiful day, the whole experience really can't be beat.
Tough course
Course was in good shape. Greens medium speed. Pace of play a bit slow and no marshals to be seen.
disappointing
It has been several years since I played this course and the conditions have worsened. Tees=C fairways=C greens=C sand=B rough=B... best part of course is the variety it offers but the layout of the course is also hard to follow.
Near Perfect Greens!
This is an awesome course, with smooth, well manicured greens. The rough was certainly a challenge, but as long as you can keep it close to the fairway it's manageable. Get too far away and it's a lost ball for sure on some of the holes. I'd definitely recommend booking a tee time.
Challenging course.
Good course very challenging. A little disappointed that the golf now printout said $70 due at course and the course added in tax and had to pay $76 at the course. The staff said the price did not include tax?
Customer Service was horrid.
This is a very challenging course. The entire course was in great condition and the greens were receptive and putted true. But this isn't the first review where the pro shop staff has been questioned about their customer service. Very arrogant and basically rude.
Dear Classic Golf Course, if using GolfNow to book tee times is an inconvenience for you, opt out. I am so sorry I used GolfNow to book my tee time rather than go to your website. When I ask since no one is at the course, can we go? "NO!!! We cannot allow GolfNow bookings to tee off at anytime besides the tee time you booked."
There were two cars in the parking lot besides ours. Nobody was on the range. After waiting 45 minutes, we just went out. Nobody in front of us or behind us. Course was in great shape, beautiful day but I can't get past the rude dude behind the desk.
rainy day
Great course when weather cooperate with you. I started on the blue tees but switched to the white tees
Course is very interesting, with difficult greens and undulating fairways.
We got a deal that cost us $15 each, including cart...can't beat that!
Damp Early Morning
We had a 7am tee time and at 5am it was raining cats and dogs. Half tempted to get a rain check. However, I knew the greens drain really well. We showed up to damp but not wet course. No puddles or soggy areas anywhere. Bunkers had already been raked by the time we had arrived at them. The grounds crew really takes care of Classic. The greens were very smooth and much quicker than I had expected considering all the rain. We had a great morning and look forward to coming back to this tight fairway gem on the south end of Puget Sound.
