Royal Ontario Golf Club
About
Royal Ontario Golf Club sprawls across gentle hillsides blanketed in mature trees and thick fescue. Formerly a stable, the course features large meadows and dense groves of trees that frame the fairways and greens. The layout has a more traditional, links design that features occasional water hazards, most notably on the par-5 ninth and 18th holes that share a large lake, but the tree-covered hills are the true challenge of the golf course. Although there are many difficult elements on this course, five sets of tees make it accessible for players of all skill levels. Royal Ontario Golf Club is often compared to the Masters Course at Lionhead Golf & Country Club.

Greeted in a friendly, accommodating manner.
We really enjoyed our experience!! Staff and all personnel very friendly and welcoming. I will definitely play here again. Course in beautiful condition.
Great Course With Concerning Issues
The course rating is a 1 star, but I preface this by saying that it was 1 star on the day we played. Overall the course is beautiful, scenic, well-maintained - a great track; however, there were 2 incidents that occurred while we were playing which resulted in my 1 star rating. My concerns are twofold: one, on hole 13 (blind dog leg to the right), I checked if the group in front was gone, there was no one on the green, I hit my shot and when I came around the dog leg, there was a young child of 2 or 3 years of age, running around the green and playing with the pin. We were shocked, first at the possibility that I could have hit the child and second, that there even was a child on the course. We called the pro shop and they sent out a marshall, who said he didn't see a child. However, he did return to us a 2nd time and confirmed there was a very young child in the group. Course policies say max 2 persons per cart (there was a child sitting on the driver's lap, unsecured - meaning 3 persons were on a cart), also every player must have clubs, this child did not have clubs (of course he/she was too young to even know what golf is). The second incident occurred on the 18th hole when we ended up backed-up by 4 groups because a wedding group was taking photos, not on the green, but halfway down the fairway. No one could hit. As a longtime golfer, I have never witnessed something like this. Usually a green photo, but never halfway up the fairway, backing up 4 groups of golfers. Unacceptable. Both of these incidents were concerning, particularly the one that saw a 2-3 year old running amok on the greens. To also be clear, we are not looking for anything regarding these matters, but felt it important to bring these to the attention of Royal Ontario and Kaneff.
Course changed tee time without our knowledge. 6 hours spent at course.
We had a 12:20 tee time which was booked nearly 1 month in advance, We arrived to the pro shop to check in at 12:00. The staff member kept correcting us and saying no your tee time is 11:50, it's 11:50 in my system etc.
I explained that I was certain it was 12:20 and asked what we were going to do to resolve it. He suggested that we play following a tournament at 1:10pm. We had to wait for every single shot, the marshall only drove through when we hit hole 14.
We only left the course at 6pm.
This is really unfortunate because the course condition was excellent, it was a fun course to play. However evey other aspect was offputting and hugely impacted my experience here.
I think what happened is we were double booked with the tournament and they decided to screw us over, I never even received a phone call about the new time or anything. I would have happily came earlier if that was an option provided to me. There was zero apologetic nature from the guy working in the pro shop, he just double and tripled down on "it's 11:50 in my system"
Not impressed.
A challenge in 44 degree heat
Course was in great condition given the recent heat wave. Only complaint was that the greens were too slow. Crew does not know how to groom bunkers. All of the sand has been raked to the top/edges leaving no sand in the bottom.
I would not reccomend at the current $145 price or $125 afternoon rate. Try Cosswinds especially if you are a senior as rates with cart are under $80 with taxes.
Very disappointing
The crew cutting grass 50-100 yards behind us on every shot
No respect for the players
Very disappointed
- made effort to complain to management because I just had to leave after 16holes (9holes of lawn movers)
Managers comment: it is out of my control..
Cart
I arrived and was well received at the club house and was asked to sign a waiver for the use of the cart and after I signed I was given a credit, all was well until I got to the 1st tee and was approached by the starter who asked me actually rudely to return my cart and share with a total stranger. I objected to the ask and I informed him I don't want to ride with a total stranger who's a smoker (he had a lit cig) and the starters response was "I don't care, if I want to ride alone I should pay for the cart" . I was very suprised by this and after going tothe club house to pay for a cart while my confirmation clearly states cart included. You need to warn customers about this changes.
Course was in excellent shape. Fairways and Putting surface was in great condition and based on your putting rolled very well. Played only 9 holes , wish it was back Nine instead.
